obviously there will be a discrepancy over what can and can not be classified as classic rock. thats what the other option is for, and can be discussed in this thread. for my money, LZ is the all around best band of all time.

EDIT: i excluded artists like the beatles, the rolling stones, the who, jimi hendrix, bob dylan, etc. because they don't seem to fit in with the other bands to me.

Great poll. My two favs on here are Van Halen and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I just got like 10 gig of 60/70s music from my Uncle including all the other bands in the poll so my opinion my might change.

Well whatever, I call them the first (great) pop band. I don't hear anything I would call 'rock' in any of their songs other than helter skelter, abd that doesn't make them rock, I mean Rihanna has a rock song.

Yeah I think of the Beatles as two different bands. Stage one was their "boy band" days a la N'Sync and crap like that. Then around Rubber Soul they discovered drugs and started to experiment but that album was still pretty goddam pop.

By the time Revolver comes out (the next album), they are seriously experimenting with drugs and churn out some really interesting stuff. They transform into a different band on that album and it only gets more interesting as you go.

But to say they were Rock & Roll is undeniable. They've influenced...well...everyone. It's just not generally what you could call good ol' Guitar Rock. They were very experimental and creative and abso-fucking-lutely brilliant artists.

I think we're looking for proper, standard 4-piece Guitar Rock models here, though. Led Zeppelin is the epitome of this genre and I will say this until I die, the best music comes from the 70's.

Honestly, I would put Pink Floyd in the same category as The Beatles because weren't they essentially doing the very same thing as far as experimentation goes?

The Main Qualifier here, I think, should be was the band heavily Blues influenced? I also don't think Van Halen belongs on the list either because that was really the beginning of a completely different era of music and if you're going to include them, you might as well add alot of (in my opinion) lame-ass 80's Hair Bands to the list. Not that I didn't love Van Halen...when I was like 15. It's just if you're going to include them, you need to tack on all the shitty stuff that followed hard on their heels such as Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, "we're off of drugs now" Aerosmith and so on.

All that said, Hendrix was still God. (Not fucking Clapton!)

i hold the beatles in a league of their own lol i can't begin to compare them to other artists. i say zep is the best of the rest though. i mean, i have all of their albums, and they are a mindfuck. the expansiveness of what they did, and the diversity of the songs they made. i mean, they covered more ground musically than any band i've ever heard. and they were way ahead of their time. and every member of that band is top 5, 10 or 20 in the instrument they played, as far as rock music goes.

when i was age 9-11 all i'd ever listen to was the beatles. when i was age 13-15 all i'd listen to was led zeppelin. now i'm into more modern music (grunge stuff- present), but classic stuff will always be near and dear to my heart.

I agree man. I have always loved good classic rock like Zeppelin, that's what I grew up on. Then I got into alt. rock like 3EB and punk like Green Day. Now, my tastes skew far more indie/post hardcore, but I still love those bands I grew up on.

Zeppelin is made up of fantastic instrumentalists, and if you don't include the Beatles in the conversation, the Zep is the choice.

However, this past year I've really become more into the Beatles than ever before. I never realized just how brilliant they were until I listened to their records from Revolver on. If anyone is looking for a good primer for the Beatles, check out the album Love. It's an album mixed by George Martin (the Beatles' prodcuer) featuring music from their whole career... so good.

That was actually the album that got me into them. About a year ago I randomly downloaded it from a music blog and fell in love with it. Not long after I saw Across the Universe. Those two things made me want to hear all their albums. I recently gotten all their records and listen to them constantly. I rarely listen to their pre- Revolver albums because they pale in comparison to everything else. For the past 6 months they are the most listened to artist on my ipod

very well put, especially the last paragraph.

AC/DC should have been on the poll

um no. They came into their own as classic rock bands (sabbath, zeppelin, the who) were on their way out. They were closer to metal. And I know ppl say those classic rock bands laid the foundations for hard rock/metal but IMO AC DC were a progression from the classic rock style.

Anyway, I think The Who and Jimi Hendrix really should have been on there, but I went with Zeppelin. Ridiculous ridiculous band that was extremely talented across the board, incredibly popular, and did so much for what would become metal and harder rock.

-Went with Zep on this one as they've always been a favorite...but it was tough. Both Pink Floyd and Cream deserve a lot of mention here as both bands have put out some really great stuff.

-I think I enjoy Dark Side of the Moon more than a couple of Led Zep's albums, but the rest of Floyd's discography dosn't strike as much of a chord with me as Zeppelin's did.

-Of the bands not included The Beatles would be my ultimate pick. Simply a cut above the rest, and that's all that can be said without gushing. But def not sure why The Who and The Eagles were left off, I think both of those bands have left much bigger marks on music than either Aerosmith, Van Halen, or Deep Purple.

i consider bands like the beatles and rolling stones and the who amazing bands, but a little bit too earlier than the rest of these bands, and more in the british invasion stage of rock music. i could see arguing zeppelin or pink floyd as artists in that genre too, but i don't get the same vibe from the who or the beatles that i do from the rest of these bands. i love the who and the beatles as much as anyone else on that list, but in my mind they don't fit in. i guess the bands that come to mind are bands that Hyde from That 70's Show listens to lol and the beatles and the who never crossed my mind in that aspect.
