Breathe Carolina - It's Classy, Not Classic
Record Label: Rise Records
Release Date: September 16, 2008

Lately in the music industry, many bands have sprung up that heavily, and almost exclusively, use electronics in their music. The majority of this music is either very crappy or very generic. Breathe Carolina's music is neither. Formed in 2006, this band quickly gained a fanbase in their home state of Colorado, and eventually, the the country. Before even being signed, the band scored some pretty impressive gigs including a stint at The Bamboozle in East Rutherford, NJ. Last summer they signed to Rise Records, and released their brand of electro-screamo to the world via this debut album.

The album opens with "The Introduction." This is easily the albums slowest piece, and one of the few to use a vocoder. However, the opening synth line is very pretty and when the vocoder-free voice of David Schmitt comes in, the listener falls in love. Though this track is fairly strong, it does get repetitive as the music and lyrics do not change as the song progresses. The ending of "The Introduction" flawlessly segues into the album's second track, "No Vacancy." This track opens up with an uber-catchy dance beat and is quick in introducing the screams of Kyle Evans. The song quickly gets repetitive though, as the vocals and musical dynamic remains the same, and the song ends with the listener wondering why more screams weren't incorporated into a track that had enough potential to be one of the album's best songs.

Track three, "Show Me Yours," starts off quite mundanely, and looks to follow the same follies that the albums earlier tracks suffered. However, the meandering first verse is saved by the amazing way in which the screams and croons play off each other. The slight slowdown in the middle is a high point of the album, giving screamer Kyle Evans the chance to (finally) showcase his yelps and screams for what they are, and the continuation of the song's dance beat sounds refreshed once it ends.

The next three tracks are among the album's finest. "The Birds and The Bees" is the first track on the album that isn't entirely new, as its been on their myspace page since before they were signed. This song opens with a pulsing dance beat and an eerie repetition of the words "I hope you know I swear to god, I hope you know that this wont stop." When the song explodes into an amazing, jaw dropping chorus, the listener NEEDS to dance along. Overall, the diversity this song shows in the course of minutes makes it one of the best songs on the album. "Classified" slows down a bit, and beautifully showcases the vocals of Schmitt and, correct me if I'm wrong, but is that Kyle Evans SINGING?! "Gossip" is the album's best song, with an eerie intro that explodes into a catchy, danceable chorus that easily makes this song the best in the electro-emo (or whatever its called) genre, showcasing what is best about Breathe Carolina in three-and-a-half minutes. Everything from the lyrics to the music to the way the screams and sings bounce off each other is just pure bliss.

The bands succumbs to bit of mundanity in "That's Classy," but "Diamonds" saves it with its beat and beautiful, soaring vocals. "You Wish (Interlude)" is a track that is without vocals, and sounds more like something from Tiesto than anything else. "Lovely" features some very textured music and vocals, including a soft croon, a harsh scream, and everything in between. Kyle Evans' screams shine the most in album closer "Put Some Clothes On," which definitely leaves the listener with a good impression of the band. The chorus soars, and it is, after "Gossip," the album's best track.

This album is definitely a strong, diverse, debut in a genre that features artists that so easily fall prey to the same exact sound. Though the lyrics could be better, they are very fitting for what is overall a record that sounds like it could be played in a NYC nightclub. The future is bright for Breathe Carolina, and the only way they can go is up.

That's strange. I didn't know it told reviewers to stay mostly positive (I've never written a review). That seems like it goes against the entire idea of writing reviews.

I'm a very critical person. All of my favorite albums have whole lists of things that I don't like. Tones, sounds, production choices, etc.

Being nice has NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING to do with the music....

Ive know about this 'band' (BEING NICE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MUSIC) since they were wee little unsigned kids playing at the smallest, but the best, venue in Denver. Needless to say, I hate their music. Its trash yadda yadda yadda.

This trend has got to stop, though. If more bands like this keep springing up and getting big (3oh!3, brokencyde, millionares breathe carolina) off innocent, unsuspecting middle schoolers, music will feel the hurt. They take away from bands that are actually decent and that everyone (including those middleschoolers) could love if they had common sense.

i can respect your opinion
even though enjoy some of the stuff out of 3OH!3 and brokeNCYDE...
(millionaires are inexcusably bad...)
i definetely see how their stuff is like a degeneration in music
over half of brokeNCYDE is crap (the other half of the songs i enjoy though)
and 3OH!3 only manage to pull off their sound on maybe half of "Want" (first album: not at all)
and if this is being called "alternative," whats next?

I've considered writing reviews a few times about artists that I have a pretty extensive knowledge of (Secret Machines, Grandaddy, Pinback, Annuals, etc), but I've never really found the time to do it.

While I hate this kind of music as much as you do, the demographic of kids that are latching onto it are often the same type of kids that were into boy bands back during the boy band craze. They're not discerning music listeners, so I'm not sure if they're putting too big of a dent in the careers of more respectable bands.

haha these are probably the kids who are going to see some of the bands that these bands tour with
and then latch onto then once they grow out of this music
and so since BrokeNCYDE is touring with Hollywood Undead, and Drop Dead Gorgeous soon
and breathe Carolina have toured with Every Avenue/The Morning Of etc...
and the other fans are probably not going to rmember this band once they (inevitably) break up
example: odds are ill look back on the fact that i listen to BrokeNCYDE in three years and be like WTF? lol

the reason i gave the album that number is because
on a technical level the album wasnt so great
but it really clicked with me
i tried to give it a higher reviewer tilt rating...
i did point out some of the albums weaker aspects of course

first off. I love Breathe Carolina, and I'm a DJ that does house parties and little dance events. And when i found them I used I LOOVEEE spinning Breathe Carolina into sets especially Gossip and The Birds and the Bees, it's sooo different and people would always ask who they were. But right now, i've moved on into actual true electro/french house etc As in Justice, So Me, blah blah basically DJs.

First IMO, after listening to them and moving onto what i listen and spin now, here's are some things i've noticed

a. in my opinion, when i first listened to BC, they were original in what they were doing, i was blown away. Their live show is pretty great as well, (in my opinion). But what they have unfortunately done is cause A HELL BUTT LOAD, of other people to start....electro bands, and that makes me wince and others wince and they get caught up in that. But you guys you have to realize they didn't start this to be famous, they put up 'Put Some Clothes On' for fun. Right now, alot of crappy copies are trying and failing at pursuing to cash in on it. IMO, i used to love MetroStation a few months ago, now looking at them now vs what i know i like to listen to now, they suck....made for radio.

b. i think they should try and go a route that is more for DJs and producers. For example, they should have a backing DJ and just them singing and screaming. Thats just me. And that's how they should have started, with a DJ set with them MCing (singing, screaming), that would have been interesting. Cause right now, they're being stuck with just real bands if that makes sense. But maybe in the future.

PS. and to Dan from PlayRadioPlay...i don't understand. (My friend showed me your page awhile ago, but i'm more of a dance/electro/in your face guy) I've also seen you live, not my cup of tea, i was more into Ultraviolet Sound. You use electronica, but basically bashing on another electronica band. I'm honestly not into your music, but i would think you would find something at least in the bit original in what they do since your music original in it's right.

No, I don't find anything original in it. Actually, it's awfulness is pretty unique, but that's about it. I don't like most electronic music.

Oh look...a kid with an anti-JCook avatar wants people to bash Breathe Carolina.

Can't do it by yourself? Go back and mingle the majority of the BN/FOB fans on this site.
Uhhh, what's your point? He dislikes Breathe Carolina and FTSK. Both respectable positions, from where I stand.

No, you don't understand. This was my mindset coming into this review:

"A Breathe Carolina review? Oh god, this has got to be good."

And by "got to be good", I meant that I thought they were going to completely take a dump on them.

When I saw that this was not so, I decided to display my disappointment.
That was the same thing I half-hoped for when I came in here. At the same time, I figured anyone taking time out of their day to write a review about Breathe Carolina probably likes them.

I couldn't stop listening to this album while I was down in Cancun. I loved it when it first came out, but I didn't expect me to return to it months later.

Can't wait to see these guys at Warped.
it was great album definetely...
i saw em live in spetember
up against the barricade and had tons of fun...
(this was the show where i went from a BrokeNCYDE hater to a BrokeNCYDE fan)
but i so cant wait for Warped
i hope Madina Lake and FTSK play my dates
but otherwise ill make do with TDWP, UnderOATH, Breathe Carolina, BrokeNCYDE, White tie Affair, Saosin, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, The Maine, There For Tomorrow and Valencia lol

Madina Lake is doing the entire Warped and its also been confirmed that TDWP, Breathe Carolina, BrokeNCYDE, and The White Tie Affair will all be doing the entire thing as well. SKSK are playing 6/26-7/26..not sure which date you plan on attending.

Of course. I'm hoping to make it out to two this summer. One on a Thursday in Milwaukee and then the Chicago/Tinley Park show a few days later on Saturday.

BC's and ADTR's 30 minute sets won't be enough to quench my 8 months of excitement.

I would rate this album more than 79% this album was almost perfect and a gem among todays scene of complete generic and uncreative garbage of bands like brokencyde or millionares.
this album doesn't fall into mundanity, for i hear something new in each song and each song sounds different than the other.

Actually I would think even 3OH3 has more creativity than Breathe Carolina does. Breathe Carolina uses the same synths for almost every song.

that's only cause they had to use garageband for their older stuff. so it's not like they had much to choose from. but you gotta give them credit. i mean i know i could never make music that catchy and amazing on garageband even if my life depended on it!

I think the music is unbearably awful, but I respect people's right to have a positive opinion on it.

This review just seemed too positive.

Of course I wouldn't mind :-)

The article was written pretty well, I just disagree with it completely. But, that's the beauty of opinions.
no offense, but i never knew about playradioplay.... i always wondered why your posts looked so different than mine, but I get it now...*slap to the face*

anyway... i'm checking you guys out on wiki.... maybe you could tell me what you're like, because when i saw Sky Eats Airplane's page it listed the primary genre as deathcore..... so i don't trust wiki users so much anymore.... especially when they listed heavyheavylowlow's primary genre as salsa... ic hanged those two immediately.

no offense, but when a band makes a full album using fills from GarageBand (as they've admitted to doing and research proves it.) how can you give their instrumentation a 75%?

first article: recording using GarageBand does not mean using GarageBand's loops. They can program stuff use synths and other equipment, and then record them with GarageBand. Apple created GarageBand so that musicians can plug in instruments and record on it directly

second article: see comments for first article

third link: just because they redid it doesnt mean they used GarageBand loops

first, i flamed chelsea in a diff thread, ima flame here again as this person just tried to flame someone without any knowledge of what they are talking about.

Second off, I think breathe carolina isn't that good, but their new song "Welcome to Savannah" is pretty good, it's MAD catchy. You can say what you want about this genre, but bands like brokencyde are absolute shit to me, 3oh3 is terrible to me, at least breathe carolina put more thought into their music.

and to playradioplay, i kinda like your music, but your stuff is pretty boring, compared to breathe carolina, and some of your lyrics dont work well, idk how to explain it really its comparable to owl city, although owl city has more interesting music to me.

Its amazing how people are with music it seems there is 3 groups in these forums

Those people who think they are cooler then everyone else and gotta listen to music that is as different from anything else as possible

people who listen to what is referred to as "fads" or the popular music(not underground) and get shitted on by group 1

then there is people such as myself who listen to everything, don't disrespect ones musical taste, and isn't biased??

seriously some people love cannibal corpse, and a lot of people would classify that as garbage music. They wouldnt even call it music, but to some people its what they wanna listen to.

if one of your fans(playradioplay) likes brokencyde and likes your music, are you gonna trash them? Thats just moronic.

Please proceed to talk tons of shit about me, I like Old metallica, cute is what aim for, at the gates, exodus, iwrestledabearonce, All Time Low, Owl City, Set Your Goals, Escape The Fate, The Devil Wears Prada, Tool, Suicidal Tendencies, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, The beatles

just to name a few. So talk shit please

but there are many things wrong with your review aside the fact that you gave the band way too much credit

for one, they started in 2007, not '06
Kyle's last name is not Evans, it's Even
the whole album has use of a vocoder, not just 'The Introduction'
your RIYL is all wrong minus The Medic Droid
it's not diverse at all, same thing in every song

AP.net is always a popular site of reference on wikipedia. However, they shouldn't reference user reviews - just staff - it defeats the purpose of 'professional reviews'. That's just my opinion though.

I haven't done an extensive search on the internet or whatever, but there is no way this album received 'positive' reviews all round. No way.
