Is there anyone else out there is becoming tired of the bright, bright colors, 59/50 hip hop hats, Nike sneakers, bubblegum imagery, cookie cutter dance pop music and lyrics about dancefloors, broken hearts and nothing in particular?

I mean, I love dance and dance rock, I even played it in my last band, but surely there is a bit more to listen to than endless songs about dancing and the 80's, played by kids who were wearing Atticus four years ago?

The Cure, New Order, Ladytron, The Liars, great bands and often amazing lyrics.
Shake Shake, Shake Shake Shake it.

I dont mean to lash out irrationally at Metro Station, after all they can certainly write immensely catchy pop (and that does take some talent, you must admit).
I'm just getting to the point where I want music to surprise me, to make me cry. To make me care about things, not just clap my hands and nod my head.

I dont want to say that music with an emphasis on lyrics and issues is any better or more worthwhile than music that makes you feel damn good. I'm just suggesting it would be good to see more variety.

Does anyone agree with me here?
I'd like to hear from everyone, wether they do or not, I'd like to discuss this :)

90% of dance rock/dance music, be it post punk, electro, new wave, etc etc...

a lot of it is just good, solid pop music. i mean, i love a lot of the new stuff like mgmt, justice, glasscandy, of montreal...but i don't know that those bands would ever make me want to "think".

i guess you'll have to look to a lot of older post punk bands like joy division and such if you're looking for something with feeling...

but shiiiit, i just wanna dance. if i want to listen to something that's gonna make me think, feel, etc, then i'll just go listen to godspeed you black emperor or something of that nature.

for the record, i do love pop music. i just don't look to pop music to get any sort of real, emotional value.

Yeah, Ive got all the Joy Division albums. Great band.

All Im saying is that isnt there a place in the industry for good pop music with a voice?
Pop doesnt have to be just pop, surely?

nah the industry doesn't care about the depth of the music.
if the words are simple and easy then people will like it more.
i love dancey post punk stuff, like Moving Units, Liars, The Chinese Stars, Deerhoof

I've never heard such a fresh, insightful, completely original take on current music trends. Good job, OP.

I agree with you guys, cookie cutter pop is driving me insane. And I'm glad to say that I deviate from it at every possible chance. But like everyone, I DO have my guilty pleasures....:)

Why are you listening to this genre if you don't like it? I'll recommend you some good stuff from the past year that doesn't suck.

The Hold Steady
The Dear and the Headlights
Underoath
The Gaslight Anthem
Thursday
Envy
United Nations

That's off the top of my head to get you started. And that's just 2008.

I didn't include anything rooted in pop-rock (like Jack's Mannequin, which is tremendous; Death Cab for Cutie's new one is good; others) but if you'd like good pop-rock recs I could drop them too.
