Cartel (http://www.cartelrocks.com): This one may be a bit obvious, but seriously, if you haven't listened to them yet, go to their purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/cartel) page and tell me "Honestly" and "The City Never Sleeps" aren't some of the best pop rock songs you've ever heard. Their EP is pretty much flawless, and I can't wait to see what they did on their full length.
Pelican (http://www.hydrahead.com/pelican): Check them out if you're into ISIS--slow, beautiful, brooding, art metal. The new CD, The Fire In Our Throats Beckons the Thaw, comes out in July/August. I'd post a link to the e-card, but it seems to be down right now. For now, get the March Into the Sea EP--it's one 20 minute long song (redone on the new CD too), and has one 10 minute "remix" of one of their songs from Australasia.
American Football: American Football Though they're no longer around (Mike Kinsella was in the band, and you may know him from Owen), their music is still great. It's straight up emo, but it's very laid back, perfect for rainy days. The guitar work is really interesting, there's inventive drumming, and sometimes you're treated to the occasional odd time signature (the first track starts off in 12/4, and though its only 3 groups of 4, it's still fun to count along). Wish I could find some music of theirs to link to.
Beneath the Massacre (http://www.beneaththemassacre.com): They just put out a new EP called Evidence of Inequity, and if you're at all into tech metal like Ion Dissonance (http://www.hxcmp3.com/bands/10081/) (I dunno what's up w/their official site) or Despised Icon (http://www.despisedicon.com), then you'll love this band. The musicianship is ridiculous, especially the drumming--fastest blastbeats I've ever heard. I know the drums are triggered, but I hope he's for real and not some studio manufactured thing.
That's all I'm gonna do for now, but I also recommend reading "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand, and using Irish Spring soap, cause it smells really good.
More importantly, here's what Will from Cartel had to say about their new CD Chroma, and what all he's been listening to lately. Enjoy:
Chroma turned out amazing. besides getting this band going i'd say that this is by far the best thing i've been a part of in my life. it truly is a landmark album i believe and i think that most would agree once they hear it. i feel as though bands in our genre will start to open up their creative conscious to think about their music more rather than jamming out the first shit they come to....and i feel that way about a lot of releases. Hopefully this will happen. i love this record and i hope you all do as well and we'll see you on the road soon.
here's what i've been listening to.
Beach Boys (http://www.thebeachboys.com): Pet Sounds - if you haven't heard this go out and buy it......they truly influenced how we thought about this record.
The Beatles (http://www.thebeatles.com): Abbey Road - because you have to.
Coldplay (http://www.coldplay.com): X&Y - one of the top 5 bands doing anything right now
Silverchair (http://www.chairpage.com): Diorama - damn good singer....damn good. listen to the shit he does on this record then realize that he did it without auto-tune....i used this record to practice vocals because of it.
Idlewild (http://www.idlewild.co.uk): The Remote Part - i haven't heard the new record but i hear it's incredible.....this one is one of my favorites that i've heard in a long time...go get it.....it's like R.E.M if they did it right......am i going to be crucified for saying that since i'm from GA? oh well....you heard it here first.
