essentially communism is a form of socialism, socialism is the ideology of Karl Marx and essentially his plan was that by certain specific steps that need to be followed in order to achieve a state with state owned industry and state ownership of capital... communism is basically a radical form of socialism that was practiced in the Soviet Union etc. and also communism is different from simple socialism because communism utilizes armed revolution to overthrow the capitalistic societies...also they would then, in utilizing armed revolution as a means to achieve their goals would hence, circumnavigate the steps that were laid down by Karl Marx....Fascism on the other hand is an authoritarian form of government that has its roots in Italy from the end of WWI to the beginning of WWII under the leadership of Benito Mussolini ... another form of fascism that sprouted up was Nazism which can trace its roots back to fascism... fascism's goal is to impose state control over all aspects of life in the nation...
Just to sum it up socialism is a general ideology that tries to create a state run economy/industry etc. ....Communism is a radical form of socialism that uses armed revolution to achieve the same goal as socialism... and fascism is a totalitarian government that the state controls all aspects of life in that nation...hope that helps

also, socialism is an economic system. communism is a type of government with which socialism is associated because Russia happened to use a socialist system. see the Netherlands or Switzerland, where the governments are heavily socialist yet the country is democratic.
you cannot have just a "socialist" country
i was going to say something about how Hitler was hypocritical to declare war on Russia as a "war on communism"..but i cant explain it well enough. anyone?

I dispute what has been said about Communism in this thread.
Communism in its pure state was another term for Marxism. As named after Karl Marx.
Communism was essentially an economic system, no government system was ever associated with it. The system looked that everyone worked for a collective wealth, it was based on workers in the 'lower class' uniting and through knock on effects over throwing the Capitilist system of government.
Marx made little relation to system of government which would keep a communist system of government active and refered that "...economic revolution under the principals of Marxism will mean the need for violence in overthrow will be minimal".
The communism practiced in Russia was then manipulated by Stalin and through propoghanda in the west people were made to believe communism essentially ment that there were no rights for any worker within the system and that it must be accomidated by a brutal government. Rhetoric which peaked in the Cold War.

Nono... Socialism has a government, usually a democracy. Communism either has (usually) no govn't, or a dictatorship. There have been cases of democratic communist countries (Afghanistan for a brief period of time in the 70s).
Asterix did a pretty good job summing it up.

... Maybe I'm just not understanding what you're writing. Socialism always has government. Communism usually has government, but the "perfect" communism would be anarchy; no government.

the point of socialism is that you can just have socialism. Karl Marx foresaw that after a brief period of the "dictatorship of the proletariat" the state would just "wither away". the aim of socialism is to create a state in which each person holds power equally, with industry, wealth and power in the hands of all the people. this would eradicate the need for a minority government in control of the people. so in a sense there is no political system.

the name "National Socialist German Worker's Party" was use of propaganda to try to unite different groups in society for support. whilst they may have included socialism in their title, their ruthless opposition and oppression of "bolsheviks" and other left wing groups in Germany clearly proves that this was an insincere message.
