Angels & Airwaves - We Don't Need to Whisper
Record Label: Geffen
Release Date: May 23, 2006 (USA)
From the break-up of Blink-182 to the genesis of Angels & Airwaves was a transition that had its toll on millions. In mid 2006, Angels & Airwaves released their first album titled We Don’t Need To Whisper, which has sold over 800,000 copies and achieved GOLD as a record.
The opening track, "Valkyrie Missile," opens up with an epic two and a half minute building crescendo of instruments and introductions making one feel like the sun is coming over the horizon to start a new day. “Everyone wants to learn to love again/ Open up and come alive/ If you will can you hear my message?”, starts off this song and you can tell DeLonge wants his old Blink-182 fans to give him and this new record a chance. The next track, "Distraction," is about someone in the middle of war finding love, with lyrics “The planes flew in/ Their bombs did too/ The city fell flat/ The fires they grew/ When the smoke comes in/ It’ll color this town/ But I’ll still have you/ So I’ll say it out loud.” This song symbolizes the tough break-up of Blink-182, but DeLonge still finding the good and positive things in his life while creating Angels & Airwaves. The following track, "Do It For Me Now," was the second single off this record which has an up-beat hip-hop sound which can really get stuck in your head. With lyrics “You’re a thief and a witch but I love you to death/ You steal my heart and curse under your breath,” it only goes to further this record as a melodic love album through the toughness of times.
The fourth song, titled "The Adventure," my personal favorite, was their first single and became their most famous song. The echoing power of the chorus is something you only feel when truly finding the one you love: “I cannot live, I can’t breathe/ Unless you do this with me.” This song has truly changed rock and roll and put Angels & Airwaves into a never-forgotten category of music. If there's one song on this album worth giving a chance, it's this one. The next song on the album, "A Little’s Enough," is very motivating. It lets the listener know that they can do anything they want in life no matter what anyone tells them, with lyrics such as: “I, I can do anything/ If you want me here/ And I can fix anything/ If you let me near.” With its lyrics alone, this album exceeds any limits DeLonge would've faced with Blink-182.
Half-way through the journey, We Don’t Need To Whisper is truly epic and doesn’t disappoint at the tail-end either. "The War" is the third single off this record, and second well-known song by Angels & Airwaves. This song actually feels as if the listener is going into war with the marching beat of the drums all the way to the rippling guitar riffs leading them into action. "The War" represents all the imagery and symbolism DeLonge felt and wanted others to feel while going through this huge change in his life. The next track is "The Gift," which DeLonge wrote after he was at his grandmother’s side as she died. At that moment he realized nothing matters as much as the ones in your life, echoing out lines of true appreciation for life and everything that comes with it.
"It Hurts" is a saddening song which states, “Your best friend is not your girlfriend,” and was written for a close family member who was going through a tough divorce according to DeLonge. Critics think DeLonge is lying and these lines are about Blink-182 and the break-up, showing how his best friends of 14 years ended up disbanding and falling apart as friends and musicians.
Next is "Good Day," which is a really great listen all-in-all. It’s a song explaining how every day is a wonderful gift no matter what happens. Its appreciation for life is undeniable with lyrics such as: “I think I like today/ I think it’s good/ It’s something I can’t get my head around.” The last track on this 50 minute journey is called "Start The Machine," showing how a war is ending, symbolizing the war in his life with Blink-182, and the great things that are to come with Angels & Airwaves. The song, and CD, ends with lyrics “If love’s a word/ That you say/ Then say it/ I will listen…” showing that Angels & Airwaves’ front man Tom DeLonge wants the listener to follow him into the future.
We Don’t Need To Whisper is a 50 minute long masterpiece that makes one’s heart soar and mind engage at full throttle. This album is daring and an amazing new style of music, incorporating atmospheric rhythms, catchy lyrics, vocals, and spacey guitar riffs. Listen to this album in a dark room, candle lit, and mind eager to go anywhere imaginable. Start to finish this album is a masterpiece in so many ways; it all depends on which way it touches you.
We Don’t Need To Whisper isn’t just an album, but a journey through war, love, struggle, and feeling anything at any moment in your life. This album rocks like U2 with epic love songs that pack as much arena grandeur as they do forward momentum. This is a must hear for any music fan in society. The concept of this album is that you, the listener, can feel anyway or anything about what is going on in your life, and the world around you -- if you can see the world differently, you can change the world itself.
