well doesn't SDRE sound more '"emo" in terms of soft and melodic than hardcore(as you know, where it came from) in relation to say Rites of Spring? ROS to me sound way more punk-ish. there doesnt seem to be a clear line between emo and indie as far as i can tell

right. that's why i consider a lot of bands today "emo' even though many like you dont. but i still recognize the others as original emo. its just that these bands are the evolved form of emo

No, the evolved form of emo today is bands like Malady, Wow Owls!, A Day In Black And White, Phoenix Bodies, La Quiete, Louise Cyphre, Shikari, Gospel, An Albatross, Fax Arcana, Transistor Transistor, etc.

that is a crapload of good bands you have there
Grant it it's still emo. Doesn't La quiete give a fresh sound to screamo. What is Saetia? Are they post screamo, or post emo. they were ahead of their time and some people say the kings of sreamo but they sound nothing like bands such as angel hair and songs of zarathustra.

I think La Quiete sound fresh because it's Italian and they actually have decent production. And I don't differentiate between emo and screamo anymore. But Saetia would be a screamo band.

circle takes the square ar eemo? they sound pretty much like post-hardcore
and also, like, i've seen a lot of things that say SDRE is emo and you've probably heard a lot that they aren't. so like how do you know? there seems to be a very thin line between indie and emo

Emo was originally called emocore, linking it to "emotional hardcore". It's roots are in hardcore, it's a hardcore sub-genre. Does SDRE sound hardcore to you? All the old zines back in the early 90's were calling all those bands on labels like Ebullition and Bloodlink emo bands, because they were. Then you had bands like SDRE and Weezer start appearing in the mainstream, and the word went astray. It's all one big misconception.

even you said Diary has its post-hardcore moments
i know the whole punk-->hardcore--->emo relationship, but i mean to say that i think SDRE are emo, but closer to the "new" sound people think of than to the original sound of Rites of Spring and Still Life (i like still life though). anyway i dunno when SDRE were mainstream really. weezer is still far more wellknown than SDRE in the music media. and what's thought of as "emo" today are bands i guess like NFG and Straylight Run. i get annoyed when people do that but anyway...SDRE to me don't represent the "mainstream"-ing of emo. its hard to show transition because now what everyone says is emo isnt
like i think Blink 182 and NFG are what stupid people refer to as "emo" when it became mainstream. i dunno how SDRE fits in with them
SDRE doesnt remind you of The Promise Ring or Mineral at all?
Many people say that The Promise Ring have nothing to do with the formation of emo.

the definition of emo isnt solid anyway. there are some definite "No"s like when people bring up Senses Fail but then others like SDRE are very close to the division i guess between indie and emo..that sound about right?
but again the point isnt to start fights over emo here. i was just trying to immerse myself further in it

The newer emo sound is the kind of bands I mentioned earlier. If you say you want to learn about this, then you should be looking to d/l stuff from these bands. That's the only way you can convince yourself of the difference in these genres, by listening to it. SDRE came out of Seattle at a time where that area was all the rage, and they were on Sub Pop. They posed in ads, had billboards, music videos sometimes on MTV, and connections to members of the popular Foo Fighters. They weren't super famous, but they were more known than any real emo band has ever been.

No it's usually the Taking Back Sunday and Brand New kind of bands, rather than those ones.
SDRE doesnt remind you of The Promise Ring or Mineral at all?
Of course they do, because all three of those bands are indie rock bands. The Promise Ring has nothing to do with the formation of emo, because I believe they formed in 1995. 11 years too late for that, not to mention they don't even have the sound. There are some elements of emo in early The Promise Ring and Mineral material, but they never made an actual emo song. SDRE never really had those elements.
the definition of emo isnt solid anyway. there are some definite "No"s like when people bring up Senses Fail but then others like SDRE are very close to the division i guess between indie and emo..that sound about right?
SDRE were just about always an indie rock band. Diary had those few post hardcore moments when they would get real dynamic, like Seven and Song About An Angel, but it's pretty much the album that started the whole confusion on what's emo and what's not.

Once again, bands like Braid and The Appleseed Cast fall under indie rock. I think once you start listening to these bands more, you'll realize the difference. Just listen to Julia, Indian Summer, and Policy of 3 albums for starters. Julia's self-entitled full-length is awesome, Indian Summer has a 9 song discography, and Policy of 3 also has a full discography release that you could d/l.
