but see I've never had a problem regarding "protection". I run frequent spyware and ad-aware scans and my pop-up blockers do a pretty good job.

I use firefox. It works pretty well, unless you have a completely idiotic computer as I do and it messes up all the time and kicks you off of mozilla Completely. That's what it did just now. I'm using IE at the moment. But mozzila... the more you go to a website on there, the faster that site loads every time you go there. And you can have tons of diff tabs up. So, it's just really cool to have.

so like...on your little bar thing...it'll have all your sites collected in one box instead of having like fifty million open?

cause if that's the case, IE does that too and I actually turned that option off..hah.

Internet Explorer's Main Problems

There are countless bugs in Internet Explorer, but here are the main reasons to choose a free alternative.

* Prone to viruses and worms
* Renders pages incorrectly. Web designers then need to spend extra time working so that pages work in Internet Explorer. This puts costs up, and slows the web down.
* Doesn't let people resize certain text sizes. This means those with poor sight cannot read small text on many sites.
* Far slower program than other web browsers
* Far larger program than other web browsers
* Isn't as user-centric as other web browsers. It lacks many handy features such as tabbed browsing and integrated search
* Doesn't support PNG images properly

Alternatives to Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is the worst major browser. There are a number of free alternatives available. These alternatives are standards compliant, i.e. they conform to international standards. Internet Explorer is not standards compliant, and thus renders pages wrongly.

On the alternatives to Internet Explorer page, we outline many superior competitors, all of which are free or have free versions. These are Mozilla Firefox, K-Meleon, Mozilla, Opera, Camino and Safari.
Microsoft responding?

Microsoft have announced 'IE7' will be available in the summer (Beta). Security fixes are expected, given MS' recent bad press in this area, but few expect Microsoft to fix web standards issues in Internet Explorer, or IE's accesibility problems.

Some only expect a similar update to Service Pack 2 (which fixed a number of very serious vulnerabilities).

Maybe some handy features will be adopted from alternative browsers, but no-one is holding their breath.

The mainstream reason is the fact that most ActiveX shit that causes spyware won't act in Firefox like it does in IE, but since MS has done their fancy little security update, it's not that much of a problem anymore. Firefox is a lot like Netscape, only open source, and it also makes you seem more of a geek to everyone. Not to mention the nice plug-ins you can get that have been mentioned before.

[edit] or what the guy above me said... That works, too.

ya honestly, I get the feeling that A LOT of people use firefox cause it's not as mainstream as IE...they don't wanna give into "the man" aka bill gates and Microsoft...I personally don't care...like the advantages listed earlier really mean nothing to me (aside from better virus/worm protection)..can someone explain tabbed windows and integrated searches for me? thanks.

Tabbed windows; like in Word Perfect if anyone uses it. (I try to avoid M$) Or MS Excel, where there are different windows behind tabs. You can't really explain it easily. Instead of opening different brower windows, it just opens tabs in the main window. Integrated searching, I don't really know, but assume it's like a search toolbar in IE

Use Avant Browser. It's pretty much like FireFox but everything on it is like IE and it's easy to get used to it.

And about the tab thingys on FireFox... on Avant Browser.. you have the same thing, except the windows are on the bottom of the page.
