Tomorrow at 10am pacific time it's THE Detroit Red Wings vs. Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field (Cubs stadium), outside and raw.

I'm so stocked. Anyone excited about this game? I know I am.

Go Red Wings.

Yeah, outside games are the best.

Anyone remember the "Cold War" with Michigan vs. Michigan State that was outside? Easily the best hockey game I have ever watched. The outdoors element gives it something better, more enjoyment...

PS - Did you know that was the most largely attended hockey game of all time.

That would be dope.

If the NHL wanted to do a little better, I think one outdoor game a month would be sick and attract more viewers.

Or even the Stanley Cup at a local outdoor stadium...

Oh, man, I just have these thoughts and they come to me... I gotta write these down.

ESundy36
01/01/09, 07:44 AM
Go Hawks. And I might be in the minority but I do not like having an outdoor game every year. I think after a while it will get old. I think every other year or even every third year. Last year's game was awesome, this year will probably be pretty fun to watch because of the site but I think they are starting to water it down a bit. I would be more content with all the Original 6 teams playing a triple header on New Year's Day all rocking throwback jerseys or a bunch of regional rivalries. I think the NHL has quite the spectrum of options that are not just outdoors.

fallout1819
01/01/09, 07:48 AM
I don't mind it every year I guess. I'd like a Boston-Habs game outdoors.

One good thing about this being over today is that "take me out to the ball game" commercial will end. It was great at first but I'm sick of it now.

ESundy36
01/01/09, 07:51 AM

I dont think every year is a bad idea but eventually it will get stale and you will run out of places to play the game. I wish there was a reasonable place in Toronto to hold it because Id love to see Leafs - Habs

ESundy36
01/01/09, 08:02 AM
I actually just discussed this with my dad and I think I put my argument together for why I don't like the Winter Classic being a yearly event. I think the Heritage Classic was something special as was last year. This year will probably be special because of the setting but I feel like there are few other settings that will add to the spectacle (Fenway Park, Rideau Canal). After that I think it just becomes a gimmick that may pull in a few fans for the NHL but in my eyes will just take away from the past events. I do however like the idea of putting the All-Star Game outdoors because that game is already useless and boring to watch so maybe that would add something to it.

That's a really good point. Plus its sort of jobs southern teams cause there's no way they'd ever be able to hold a game.

Yeah, I was trying to think of a place and all I could up with is BMO Field in Toronto or Molson Stadium in Montreal but both of those are rather bland locations.

StuGrimson
01/01/09, 08:11 AM
Ive heard BMO field mentioned before but it barely holds more than the ACC so it would be a waste. The Leafs hold outdoor practices every year at neighbourhood rinks around Toronto so thats probably the closest Toronto will ever get.

NHL Pre-Season Exhibition
Las Vegas, Nevada
September 28, 1991
New York Rangers vs. Los Angeles Kings
Attendance: 13,000

The Las Vegas strip provided the background for the first ever NHL exhibition game to be held outdoors. The Kings and the Rangers battled under the lights outside Caesars Palace in mid-80 degree temperatures. The game drew a crowd of 13,000, most of whom wore shorts and t-shirts to take it all in. "We were a little bit in awe and I'm sure (the Rangers) were, too," said the Kings' Wayne Gretzky about the outdoor game. "We kept looking at each other and couldn't believe we were playing hockey in 80-degree weather. But it was real nice.”

There are around 15 other Devils fans other than the posters in this forum in the world. You'd have to have a team with a strong enough fan base to have attendance. With the emergence of the Blackhawks, the choice to have them in the game was a great call, especially against the defending champions, who are divisional rivals.

I don't see the Devils ever being apart of one of these games.

Habs/Leafs would be huge for the NHL as a business. Habs/Bruins would be the next best thing, because it would be a great hockey game on top of high ratings (No offense Stu)
