I understand the multiplication part, but I dont understand how the "0" and "1" can stand for letters??

Every letter is assigned a numerical value. The computer converts the numerical value into binary and assigns it to the letter. So when we type "a", the computer interprets it as 01100001. Similarly, "b" is 01100010 and "c" is 01100011 and so on.

It's pretty much the same as our numerical system of counting in tens: 1234 means 1 of 10^3, 2 of 10^2, 3 of 10^1 and 4 of 10^0, except instead of having every place be a power of ten, it's a power of two. This only requires a 1 or a 0 as a place holder.
So a one in the first spot is equal to 1
the second 2
third 4
fourth 8
fifth 16
and so on and so forth, and you add them up as you would with regular numbers (So the joke above reads: why was six afraid of seven? Because seven "ate"/eight nine!).
