there is a u sound so ideally it should be colur but that spelling looks retarded, so colour is better

Both, although i use "colour" and "cheque"...
The latter spellings are the original English version, mainly derived from French and still used today in Britain. The former was a deliberate change in spelling by the American lexicographer Samuel Johnson as a political statement to highlight the differences and diverging from the original British spelling.
