Black Light Burns - Cover Your Heart
Record Label: I Am: Wolfpack
Release Date: August 5, 2008
Let it be known that I harbor ill will for Black Light Burns. From the moment I heard them slaughter "Hungry Like The Wolf" by Duran Duran, I realized nothing good was in store. Unfortunately, I was right. Cover Your Heart is a venture into the mundane and "progressive." Basically, what Black Light Burns has done to each of the covers on this album is turn them into a horrid mix between She Want Revenge, The Horrors, and Showbread.
It doesn't matter whether they're using the abrasive electronics, singing in a monotone, or just playing their instruments with mediocrity, it's not fun to listen to. In fact, listening to this album just makes me think about what else I'd much rather be listening to. The first ten songs are covers, the eleventh is a b-side from their 2007 album entitled Cruel Melody, and the rest of the tracks are instrumental. The vocals are so mundane on this album that they alone could make up your decision not to listen to it. Whether they're making an attempt at screaming ("Blood Red Head On Fire") or trying some 'classy' singing ("Search And Destroy") the vocals are uninteresting and not entertaining.
If you're a fan of Cruel Melody, then you'll probably enjoy this album (after all, it's only covers). If you dislike it, or haven't yet heard of them, then it's more than likely you'll disprove of them creating mediocre copies of once-great songs. However, if you enjoy She Wants Revenge or so called 'experimentation' then go ahead and check this out. Otherwise, duck down, cover your head, and hope it doesn't find you.
