"In his film boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, but girl doesn’t exactly fall in love back. And it drives the boy mad, as it would any boy who fell in love with a girl as charming as Ms. Deschanel. It is hands down the most delightfully surprising film of this year’s festival so far, continually catching its audience off guard, effortlessly delivering the laughs and earning every ounce of its opening night standing ovation. Don’t be surprised if 500 Days of Summer does the same once it is unleashed on the rest of the world."

This review (http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/01/18/sundance-movie-review-500-days-of-summer/) has me even more stoked.

The film was met with a standing ovation at the Eccles theater premiere. Standing-O’s have been happening less and less since I first started coming to the festival in 2004. But after the credits finished rolling up the screen of the Park City High School Auditorium, the 1,270 audience members in attendance were all on their feet, clapping their hands. And the reason why this film got such a great response is because it’s one of those films you instantly fall in love with. Like Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, or Slumdog Millionaire....

...500 Days of Summer is the first romantic comedy that everyone can relate to, because everyone has been through this type of relationship. I would like to think up some insanely createive near-hyperbole with adjatives like Wonderful, magical, charming, and somehow including the words must see. But I have yet to get any sleep at Sundance, and its now only day 4. So the best I can do is tell you that you will love this film. And I guess we’ll have to settle for that and the discussion of a new term for indie romcom for later.

/Film Rating: 9 out of 10

Cannot wait.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a Q & A at the screening I attended. One of the highlights being that the director Marc Webb had a specific color palette for the film. That color being blue, and the inspiration of that being Zooey's eyes. I thought that was pretty neat. If Webb's work here is an any indication of his future, he should be one to watch after.

Come Oscar season 2009 if this isn't an absolute lock for Best Original Screenplay the Oscars will lose all relevance to me. This is an absolutely amazing story, one where certain parts are painful to read because they seem to be taken out of my life and one where certain parts- the ending- make me get a knot in my throat and a few tears in my eyes because of how real it is and how beautiful it is.

Inglorious Basterds is now my second most anticipated movie of 2009, 500 Days of Summer is sitting pretty at number one. This is one of the most perfecty put together stories I've ever read.

We're not even halfway through the year yet. Ever heard of the General forum running gag "AOTY"?

Considering Jacob reads a lot of scripts of movies coming out in the year, I hardly think this is similar to, "Album of the year and I haven't even heard it yet!"

We know for sure what's coming out, we know about directors, screenwriters, and actors tendencies, we know the plot synopsises, etc. So I think every year, it's easy to estimate what the biggest films and oscar contenders are going to be. This could very easily be an original screenplay contender, especially considering the reviews.

If I say an album I haven't heard yet is the best album of the year I'm an idiot
If I've heard it and love and say it I might be wrong

If I say a script that had a huge emotional impact on me thanks to how well written and personal it was to me that stars two of my favorite actors and an extremely talented director is the most satisfying script I've ever read after I've actually read it, I think thats pretty fair.

stayillogical

Well, if it's better written than Inglorious Bastards (how many years has Tarantino been working on this?), then I'm sold. It has Little Miss Sunshine/Juno/Slumdog Millionaire buzz all over it. Plus, an Annie Hall feel to it, call me crazy because I haven't even read the script but I'm also shooting for Best Original Screenplay. There hasn't been a good romance like this, since... well, I don't know.

Edit: Haha, well I'm an idiot. But these are my expectations and that's what I'm hoping for. I'll know next week! :celebrate:

I'm just saying you sometimes make pretty bold statements that I can't help but roll my eyes at. For example, I think you called Benjamin Button one of the best films ever made on the same day you saw it for the first time. You may stand by that sentiment twenty years from now, but you should probably let material sink in for a while before you hand out such praise or unflinching ultimatums ("the Oscars will lose all relevance to me").

There was a moment where I semi-yelled at my friend next to me and might have missed it then. He dared to say, "The main girl looks like Katy Perry." My response, "NO, KATY PERRY LOOKS LIKE HER," aggressive hand motions and all.

And my friends that I watched it with, well.... not to sound elitist, but I don't think they could fully appreciate it. One's favorite movie being Transporter and the other a huge POTC fan.

Wait a second... there's a scene from the trailer that I didn't catch in the movie. Can someone else who has seen it tell me if I just missed it? When he sees a bus full of Zooeys

There was a moment where I semi-yelled at my friend next to me and might have missed it then. He dared to say, "The main girl looks like Katy Perry." My response, "NO, KATY PERRY LOOKS LIKE HER," aggressive hand motions and all.
In the script it was when Tom was going through the period of being miserable over Summer. He gets kicked off a bus and when he got on it the bus was full of Zooey's.

How perfect is Go Ask Your Dad at the end?

That was probably a poor choice of words. Annie Hall is one of my favorite movies of all time, and overall, Annie Hall and 500 Days are very similar, both thematically and in the way their stories are structured. JoBlo review:

REVIEW: God bless this film for showing the other side of love. The not-so-rosy side of relationships. For showing that men don’t always dictate the pace. Men don’t always screw over women, men aren’t simply clamoring to get laid. That’s right, despite what Hollywood seems to think, some of us men suffer too damnit, we got feelings too. That’s not to say that 500 Days of Summer is some whiny, emo, girl-power marathon- it’s not, at all. It’s just a realistic, witty, and most importantly extremely entertaining piece of filmmaking. It’s the “Rom-com rebuttal”. Sure, it’s still a comedy, and yes, at times it can be very romantic, but it sure ain’t sweet, and this baby ain’t even remotely formulaic. As the title suggests, we follow the 500 days that Tom Hansen has Summer in his life. We don’t however follow this story in order. We jump from day 249 to day 1, to day 488, to day 44, etc. It can get a bit disorienting and tiresome at times, but it works better than your typical point A to point B narrative. This and several other elements of the film are very evocative of another of my favorites that rebel against the genre, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In both films we get a sensitive male lead and an elusive, cold female who serves as the object of the male’s every desire and the subject of their greatest fears. It’s a bold tactic in that romantic comedies (http://joblo.com/index2.php#) are typically for the female audience, with characters they can sympathize with. 500 Days of Summer is decidedly told from the male’s perspective (though it appeals to both sexes), so here’s hoping a male audience can get over their preconceptions and give this film a go.

Gordon-Leavitt is great as always, playing an everyman who, God bless him, just wants to meet (http://joblo.com/index2.php#) the right girl and settle down. While he’s sure Summer is that girl, she’s not so sure he’s the right guy, or that there’s even such thing. Throughout their tumultuous relationship, the screenwriters built in some moments of rare realism, like that short, cryptic email (http://joblo.com/index2.php#) us guys dread, the inevitable “friends” talk, the possible rekindling of romance, etc. It’s hard to describe without giving too much away, but I’d bet good money that anyone who sees this film will find at least one or two instances where they say “Wow, yeah, I can relate to that.”
That isn’t to say this film is one long break-up or downer. Not even close! It’s a comedy after all, and there are many happy times to be had by the couple. Music video helmer Marc Webb directed this thing with great visual flair, providing everything from animation (http://joblo.com/index2.php#) to a fantastic dance number that is easily one of the film’s great moments. Drawing on both classic 80’s hits and current hipster tunes, this film’s soundtrack is one that’ll probably be a big seller as well, and keeps the film upbeat.
Other than the somewhat disorienting narrative, there are a few other small hang-ups I had with this film. Despite smashing dozens of stereotypes, the pic does unfortunately succumb to several which standout all the more. These include the horny, crude, never-gets-laid best friend, and the for-some-reason-20-years-more-mature-than-she-should be younger sister. Also, since the film wants to appeal to mass audiences as much as possible, it shies away from too many truly emotional moments, and I wish there were a few more of those, but on the whole, this thing still packs way more emotional punch than 99% of the rom-coms out there today.
In fact, I don’t want to classify 500 Days as a rom-com at all. I can’t call it a tragicomedy either though, or a drama. The film really is unclassifiable, and that in my mind is the mark of something truly original.
RATING: 8.5/10

I went crazy writing this and its a bit too long, forgive me. No spoilers at all. Please go see this movie and have a great time doing it.

I am beside myself with happiness that this movie exists. It almost seems to good to be true. It is wonderful. There's no other way to put it. I went in there- a packed theatre in Philadelphia full of extremely nice people, some cinephiles like myself and an abundance of pretty girls- with impossibly high expectations. Some would say that I wrongly put this film on an absurdly high pedestal of anticipation. I have hyped it up constantly and will continue to do so for the next few weeks for a very good reason: it deserves it. It shattered my expectations. It was better than I thought it could be, and I was expecting it to be damn good.

My love for this film is partly rooted in how much I can relate to the story. I got out a two year relationship that took me a long time to get over once I actually got over it, and it has some very lasting ramifications on my life. Some of the similarites between that relationship and the one Summer and Tom share are uncanny, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will feel this way. Summer is a girl that every guy loves. She's absolutely perfect and yet she will break Tom's (your) heart by telling you that its not serious, that she doesn't want a boyfriend. Tom is a guy every girl knows. I think many males- myself, certainly- will see a lot of themselves in him. His misery and joy are and feelings throughout the film are so perfectly done and familar that the film has an aspect of reality that very few ever attain, and it makes it seem easy. We feel his frustration and happiness. The entire film is like this- the little actions and conversations between characters, the way they talk and interact is so perfect that it seems like it could be scenes out of any relationship. The film suceeds so much because its real. Its painful almost painful at many points, how close to reality it comes. It will give you an exterme case of nostalgia, no doubt.

With the personal effects out of the way, onto to the other aspects of the film. Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, who is in my opnion the most beautiful woman alive, give spectacular performances. Their chemistry could not be better. Their relationship is so tender and believable that it makes the events we see hit home even more. They're both emotional and dramatic, and hilarious. The whole movie has plenty of laughs, and plenty of tear jerker moments too. Marc Webb has a nice, long career ahead of him. If I can ever make a movie half as good as this I'll be able to die happy. The man has done an incredible job. Visually the film looks like it feels. Its bursting with color, a lot of that color light blue, as he went by a color pallette of Zooey's eyes- light blue. The pacing, the mood are all perfect. The film is just full of energy, from the excellent music to grea use of animation to fantasy sequences. A few homages to old classics are some of the funniest parts of the movie. So many parts just bring a huge smile to your face and just make you giddy with joy at how fun it is, a feeling that stayed with me long after I left the theatre.

There are three things about this film that stand out above everything else. 1- the soundtrack. It makes the film what it is. The music fits so well that it just seems natural, it adds so much to the film.
2- The reality of the story. This film is so strikingly real and tender that it will no doubt hit you on a personal level and make you think about past loves, future loves. Its left me thinking of a lot of things and not in a bad way at all. Like a really good song, it packs a huge punch of emotion.
3- The story. This is one of the most perfectly put together stories ever told. Jumping back and forth across the 500 days keeps us on our toes- we see the good, the bad, the before, the during, the after- it makes the narrative exciting and delightful. And the ending. Oh man the ending. It gave me chills. A scene near the end, a big climactic scene between the two main characters, had myself and half the theatre in tears. Its so beautifully written and executed- and then we get to the ending. The film ends with a happy, sad, and realstic ending that will gauge tons of reaction and feelings at once. I laughed, in sheer joy and amazement at how perfect it is how fitting the last line is. The ending of the film is by far the best part.

I cannot say enough good things about this movie. I would like to see in the best picture race come January, however unlikely that may be. It just hit me so hard. It made me feel wonderful, and made me feel nostalgic and thoughtful. It made me miss my past relationship and want to find a pretty girl and give her everything she ever wanted. This is a film that I will think about for months to come. The day I can buy it on DVD and watch it everyday for weeks will be one of the happiest of my life. If you want to feel some emotion, to get the feelings that love and life give you, all the sadness and above all, the happiness, see this movie.

A small warning to everyone- do not wikipedia Minka Kelly or look at her filmography on any other site. Looking at the nature of her role in the film will ruin a huge part of the story and frankly its to good to spoil.

Change this to looking at any casting related articles instead, just mentioning so and so's name kind of ruins the surprise. That person doesn't even have a name on IMDB.

i really cant express how much i enjoyed this movie. there were changes from the script i read but i really like how they changed it. Everything about this movie was real. We all have been in situations like summer and tom. Life gets in the way of 2 people coming together. And guys especially tends to overly fantasize about things.

Except the sites not working for me right now, it refuses to open.
