Actually, that's a common misconception. It doesn't stand for anything. His Infernal Majesty was another band or something...it's not them though.

I read somewhere that since they're from Europe (Sweden, I believe), they wanted a name that was short and would be easily pronouncible in any language, and HIM is just what they decided on. No satanic meanings, no abbreviation for anything.

Actually it was His Infernal Majesty but they would shorten it to HIM and eventually decided to drop the "His Infernal Majesty". They were trying to ditch the satanic associations people were making with their name. I think in some interview Ville explained it at length. I'm just glad when they came over here they got to keep there name because for a short time they had released Razorblade Romance as HER because there was already a band in the US called HIM or 4HIM or something.

And while Dark Light may come off as an oxymoron, HIM has always been about combining light and dark things, the heartagram for example heart(light) and pentagram("dark") and their album titles like Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights.

yeah, there was a band called HiM that had members of June of 44, hence the problems with their records being distributed in america for some time
