It's true, I never experienced the scene as it grew.
But that doesn't mean I'm incapable of loving and knowing the music!
It's just way harder listening from the top down.

It's just that heavy music is just as commercial as pop these days. It's all one big marketing ploy.
It's much rarer now to find a band genuinely striving to make original music.

metal is metal idk i dont listen to much but i think you know
hardcore is heavy fast punk originating from the eighties
thrash is faster hardcore
screamo is
actually all of this is going to end up sounding the same never mind
this is harder to explain than i thought

Well metal originated from harder rock bands like Black Sabbath. Progressed into speed/ thrash metal like metallica in the 80's. Oce Slayer hit, it got really heavy and began to really branch off. Death metal was formed, and with it came Napalm Death. Napalm Death basically invented grindcore by intermixing the heaviness of bands like Slayer and Death with super-fast tempos borrowed from hardcore. Kinda sounds like one big explosion.
Punk is the progenitor of hardcore. Hardcore is just faster, more aggressive punk. Started in Early 80's. Stuff like Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags. Some modern hardcore bands are Verse, American Nightmare, Modern Life is War stuff like that.

BTBAM is a metal band. ctts, pg 99, and saetia are screamo bands. I'm not going to bother putting a label on converge because there's no chance of me getting it right.
Hardcore songs don't have breakdowns (in my opinion. If it has breakdowns and you think it's hardcore good chance it's metalcore)
Metal songs generally pay more attention to the guitar parts, and its generally less sloppy with longer songs than hardcore.
Screamo is a subgenre of hardcore punk.
Thrash is a subgenre of metal.
Grindcore is essentially a shitload of blast beats, with heavy vocals, very short songs generally.. Pretty much it's easy to differentiate from other hardcore genres.
Oh and I hope CTTS just breaks up already. Terrible band.

A breakdown doesn't necessarily have to be a chugging metalcore type deal. A song containing a breakdown does not automatically make it the metalcore genre. Brand New fucking has a breakdown in The Shower Scene. New Found Glory has breakdowns. Have Heart. None of which are metalcore.

Considering: regardless of what side you were on of the original post stating that breakdowns are only encompassed within metalcore, the sarcastic "wit" you used in response isn't applicable to my post. If you were in agreement with the original statement, then my point proved yours wrong and therefore you shouldn't be a whiney prick about being wrong. You do know the genre much better than myself. What would you consider a band like Have Heart?
I know hardcore in essence takes any musical structure (i.e. verse, chorus, bridge, breakdown, whatever) and throws it out the window, but all of that shit are guidelines versus a rule, I feel.
In your post you said that if you are listening to anything and it has a breakdown it's most likely metalcore. Throughout this dysfunctional argument I think we all worded our expression incorrectly.

I said if it sounds hardcore and it had breakdowns it's probably metalcore, but I really know jack shit about anything so taking my word on something is a bad idea. I do listen to a good amount of what's considered hardcore, but that really doesn't mean I know anything when it comes to knowing what actually constitutes the genre.

There is no musical progression there. Sorry holmes. I'm speaking of a well distinguished verse to chorus progression. I never experienced hardcore live and I've never spoken to anyone who was in a hardcore band, nor have I ever spoke to the founders of it. I do know that I've read plenty about it and that in a lot of articles they speak of not following the structure of a song because hardcore isn't meant to be structured.
I'm no musical genius, but that video you linked me of Void doesn't really display anything toward your side of the argument.

There is a well distinguished verse to chorus progression (among other things), that's my point.
Also if all of those things are true, stop acting like you know what you are talking about. If you were trying to tell me that later Black Flag (for example) was devoid of musical structure, I'd say OK... you have a valid point.

My mistake I was speaking of being around hardcore when it was first getting started. Obviously I've been to a lot of "hardcore" shows local and national (Comeback Kid, Verse, etc.), but I'm speaking of earlier hardcore bands like Void.
Could you point out the distinct choruses for me? I will gladly concede if so. This is only something I've read and heard from other people, so obviously the validity of it may be nil.
Like I've said I'm no musical genius, but I know my fair share of Theory and I couldn't find anything in there.

Verse and CBK have a ton of musical structure in their songs.
Let's see... as far as this Void song? You have an intro, a verse ("I wake up and I see you every day..."), a chorus ("so who are you? why am I here?"), a little break before another verse, another chorus, a break, another verse, chorus, etc.

Hahah I hate to be such a stickler, but it seems linear with no repetition is what I'm saying. Choruses generally have a circular repeated type deal displaying the overall message of the song, whereas verses tend to stray a bit but are the linear almost tale of a song. Obviously it's not the same thing over and over and over again. But hardcore I could've sworn purposely doesn't structure their music to immitate the messages indicated by the music which is generally not very organized.
I guess this is something that I just have stuck in my head. Let's get back to the topic at hand.
