Not even my die-hard Nascar fan friends have been able to answer this question that I've been asking for years: Why are active Nextel Cup drivers allowed to compete in Busch Series races? It doesn't make any sense to me. Anyone have a good answer?

I have a better question. Why is Nascar considered a sport? I can sit in a car and drive around in circles for hours too.

ummm...that's about as good of an answer as anyone has given me so far...but it really doesn't satisfy my curiosity.

You can probably ice skate with a stick in your hand too. Is hockey not a sport.
You can probably stand in a batter's box and take a few pitches. Is baseball not a sport?
You can probably snap a ball, throw a ball, catch a ball, and even run with a ball. Is football not a sport?
Can you kick? Is soccer not a sport?
Can you ride a bike? Better let Lance Armstrong know that he's not actually competeing in a sport.

I guess my thinking is this: What other professional sport allows its active competitiors to simualtaniously compete at a lower level within the same association.
Maybe it's purely for the benefit of those that compete soley at that lower level. i.e. Experience for the drivers and pit crews.
Anyone know if Nextel Cup drivers are eligable to win the Busch Series points championship?

Three, I think, if you count the Craftsman Truck Series. So I guess my questions extend to it as well.

I don't understand it either. It usually just makes me mad because 90% of the time they have more experience and they end up winning every race. ehhh.
Craftsman Truck Series is where it's at. I mainly watch because Steve Park is one of my favorite people ever.

I like the fights the guys get into. I hope Stewart and Gordon go at it, thus causing a major fall out and everyone wrecking each other. Could be fun.

Are you positive the Nextel league is at a lower level? I dont know anything about the circuit, but it seems to me it could be something like the NFL and AFL or NBA and ABA (was it aba?) leagues and how they merged together....?

Well, I don't think the wrecks are much fun because they usually interrupt good racing, but I do enjoy the sparing that goes on before and after the race.
Anyone watch this afternoon's race in Chicago? Biffle's a big baby, if you ask me. I love the strategizing, chess-factor, of racing. Race well-won Kevin!

No, the Nextel Cup is the top level of Nascar Racing. The Busch Series is the minor league, if you will. I'm not exactly sure where the Craftsman Series fits in. I do know that drivers graduate from the Bucsh Series to the Nextel Cup.

If I could find the "confused" smiley it would be here right now....whatever. As long as I see fights I'm happy.

If I could find the "almost too drunk to type" it would be here.

i was watching sportscenter this morning and two guys were talking about wrecking each other, wouldn't you think they'd be suspended for saying they're going to do that to someone else? Seeing as how some people have died in the sport.

Yeah, but can you do it at 150+ mph, highly unlikely. Had a friend that drove in a NASCAR car once, as a passenger. He said he couldn't keep himself of the passenger side door there was that great a pull. Try dealing with that for 3-4 hours, all while trying to pass/block people.
I won't watch it, but I still have some respect for them.

Funny you should mention that- NBC did a piece during the pre-race portion of their coverage today where Jennie Finch was interviewed, by the driver, from the passenger seat of a racecar. She was pretty freaked out. Funny stuff.

Well....to start off the Busch series car IS a different car than the one they drive the in the Nextel Series. But I really don't think some of the drivers should be racing in Busch because if you look at whose won races this season a lot of them of Nextel Series regulars. Alot of them also drive in the truck series which is also not fair. And yeah you can go for both the Busch and Nextel Cup. Just look at Carl Edwards. He could easilly be contending for both campionships. And if you say that racing can't be called a sport you have no knowledge of racing....the sport is extremely demanding......When I heard Elliot Sadler talk at the Fontana race last year he said that during the races he looses 8-12 pounds just in those 4 or so hours of racing......and most athletes aren't as well fit as some of the NASCAR drivers....You should really look into the sport before saying its not one.....they do a lot more than just DRIVING
