View Full Version : Most Disappointing Album: Part II

There's been plenty of disappointment since the last thread, so i figured I'd bring it back. Remember, this is supposed to be a thread about albums you thought you were going to love, but ended up completely hating or at the very least not liking. Without any further ado, my list:
Kanye West - 808's And Heartbreaks
I know people are going to flame me for this one, but I just think the whole album is one big, long, auto-tuned POS.Did he forget he is a good rapper? He probably should have tried...rapping.
Survive Atlantica - New Songs
Formerly known as We're Not Superheroes Anymore, this band was one of my favorites. With the name change came a style change. The music isn't really...bad, it just isn't the same. :(
Panic(!) At The Disco - Pretty. Odd.
This gets on my list solely because my expectations were already not very high, and it still managed to completely disappoint...it was pretty. Terrible.
Linkin Park - LP Underground v8.0: Sweet Hamster Like Jewels From America!
Finally, another b-side album! ...oh wait, it's terrible. Will admit, however, 26 Lettaz In Da Alphabet made me laugh. Oh well, my fault for expecting HT quality content.
This Providence - My Beautiful Rescue (Renovated)
I love the original song. In fact, it's been my ringtone for well over a year. But i think the original was very vocally/lyrically driven, and this version is just not the same spirit, but I think this one is just due to my taste.
Your turn! :-d

You expected good things from Linkin Park?
Expect that to be the bulk of responses.
First rock band I ever listened to. Will always have my heart no matter how bad they get. X-)

I did not like Panic's first album, but I actually enjoyed Pretty. Odd. I think i may be the only one. lol
I liked the arrangements of most of the songs and loved the mixolydian were so starving into nine in the afternoon.

Billy Bragg - Mr. Love & Justice
i hoped for something different than what i got. my own fault there really
Dezarie - Eaze the Pain
actually an album i enjoy hugely, & one of my favourites of last year. it's just that since her flawless debut not a lot has changed on the last couple albums, she has so much potential & a voice so pure
Béla Fleck & the Flecktones - Jingle All the Way
bluegrass/jazz fusion goes... christmas? such a waste
Victor Wooten - Palmystery
so lackluster for such a renowned talent. i hate to say it, but it's almost as if he set out to make the ultimate cafe background album
Michael McDonald - Soul Speak
covers, all covers. some were "nice". but i really wanted more than nice, & perhaps something original for the first time in what feels like ages mike

yea that's a good one. i'm one of those annoying people who isn't feeling much jimmy eat world has done since clarity haha. but at least they were going somewhere with their albums, up until the last, which sounded like a major regression. but each to their own

Never really enjoyed Jimmy Eat World.
1. Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs
I can't put my finger on it, but the album is missing something. I have recently been on a huge transatlantacism/photo album binge and it makes this album even more of a letdown. I expected at least something new after the first single but it honestly turned out to be a poor rehash of their last two albums.
2. Protest the Hero - Fortress
Say what you will, but I really enjoyed Kezia. This album seemed good at first but I quickly grew tired of it. They pretty much removed all aspects that I enjoyed about them on the first album.
3. Mars Volta - Bedlam for Goliath
They toned down any of the more "out there" parts of their music for a far less enjoyable album than the previous three in my opinion.
4. Bon Iver - Bloodbank
The vocals completely ruin it for me.

maybe the grateful dead quiet jam parts but Omar experimented a lot with harsh noise which i found entertaining
idk Frances the Mute was ok but i could care less for half that album and after that

I think the main thing that botheredme was that Wax Simulcra song. Regardless of the fact that Pridgen is a really fucking amazing drummer, it sounded like an average The Fall of Troy song to me. And no song really stood out to me anyway.

Wow see I disagree with you.
For me Narrow Stairs was better than Plans. I really liked the return to tape and I really thought this album has their most upbeat stuff to date. I love Bixby Canynon Bridge. The building structure, fuzzy guitars, noisy filters and lyrical content. Long Division's synth got me and so did No Sunlight. Transatlanticism is still my favorite, but I thought this album hit alot of different colors than their past albums.
I thought Bedlam was good, although you are right, it was more straight-ahead. Goliath is jammy and some of the sax stuff is pretty crazy, but its still my least favorite. I really enjoyed the crazy shit in their past albums, its what hooked me. I may be in the minority, but i love Amputechture, minus the mixing, but i think alot of the negative feedback really prompted the more toned down and song aproach to this record. But if Wax Simulcra was your problem, well its 2 and a half minutes of a 70 minute album. And common that killer soprano sax at the end.
You are correct about Protest The Hero though. Kezia was fantastic and although they got harder and more technical, they got less memorable. I loved when they would mix in those anthemic choruses but sadly, there are not many of those on this record. I really thought they could have gone some place special, which they kind of did with Kezia, but instead they just reafirrmed my feelings about metal.
Don't know Bon Iver, will give it a listen.

You're right about Chris Pennie, but I like Thomas Pridgen in TMV. His singal pedal and ghost-note crazziness is great for the band.
Plus, and it became very evident seeing them live, but I think Thomas Pridgen is kinda of the epicenter of the band. Obviously Omar is writing, creating and directing the band, but the energy now is kinda built around the drums. I don't thats my opinion, I feel its a more balanced band now.

Jon Theodre did the gnarliest beats though man (as well as using single pedal)
idk anyone is better than that old balding dude that i saw them play with on their Frances the Mute tour
god damn he had awful fills
and Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab For Cutie was just on Scrubs
i remember how good Plans was

1) narrow stairs - deatch cab
i like a bunch of the songs but just as a record it didnt work for me, plans and translantacism are much better in my opinion
2) Iempire - ava
thought the first cd was really good, definatly still play it but iempire just didnt work. It wasnt a smooth play through and i thought the guitar work was really rushed
3) Louder Now - taking back sunday
really doesnt need much of an explanation, i thought it would just be better then it turned out to be
4) all time low
i renenber my friend sent me the first 2 songs from there ep and thought it was some catchy popwerpop but then i played through the full length and it was just songs for 12 year olds that werent nearly as catchy as the ones i got from the EP. It was so genric there completly off my radar
5) Appeal to Reason - Rise Agaisnt
this is one which i was dissappointed but wasnt really that surprised. With each album theyve gotten more radio friendly and poppier which i dont disrespect at all, there just trying to make a living. However appeal to reason i feel just sounds really strange to me because its the lead singers raspy punk voice with lguitar riffs that be taken from fall out boy for many of the songs. just sounds really uncomforatble to me

Wow, I can see how someone can not like Narrow Stairs as much as some of the other albums, but not because it's a rehash of any of them. It's very different from their previous stuff in my ears, especially compared to Plans.
I'm not sure which I prefer the most myself, only that none of them measure up to Transatlanticism.
My biggest disappointment of recent times was Kings of Leon - Only By The Night. It wasn't bad, I just expected a hell of a lot more. After Because Of The Times I was certain that they were going to be my favourite band ever, because I loved it from start to end. Now they're not even close.

I really never can understand how people say "Oh that's a pretty good band with catchy songs." off of one CD, and then when they release the next everyone sits and says "Wow I hate this CD that band sucks! I don't pay any attention to them anymore!" It's kinda sad... All bands make a CD or two people don't like. So to count someone out just because you didn't like some of the songs on their CD, even though you liked other ones is crazy.
I love so wrong its right, and I think the songs are pretty damn catchy.
