Hey man, I wish I could help, but I have the same problem haha... The drummer of Anberlin does so much stuff with spinning drumsticks and stuff like that while they play, it makes them much more fun to watch.

go to Drummerworld.com and watch video's of John Blackwell and Virgil Donati. They do a lot of nice little stick tricks you can easily pick up. And regards to Anberlin, they are a great live band but when i saw them everyone was kinda looking at them funny because they were overplaying everything. But thats just an opinion.

Yeah I guess you're right, Anberlin might overdo it sometimes, like the bassist wouldn't stop moving at all... But I dunno, I'd rather that than statues on the stage... But Fall Out Boy is a great example of a band that tries too hard to put on a good show rather than play the notes on their guitar the way theyre supposed to be played... and thanks for the heads up on the website... :scatter:

The worst is My Chemical Romance. They actually try so hard. If you want to (wich i doubt haha) check out live videos of them its fucking hilarious. The guitarist is on the floor going crazy.

Alright you guys, I was googling around and ran into this thread, and registered just to I could post here. Spinning sticks is a very simple matter in terms of technique, but takes a bit of practice to put into actual play. You don't just wanna flick them between your fingers-- you wanna do what THESE guys do with sticks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVYKEBDJwwk
Most of the stuff they're doing there involves one or two hand positions, and a bit of variation. The basics (for learning) go like this:
-hold one tip of the drumstick with ONLY your index finger and thumb.
-focus your attention on one tip (the far one) at all times
-start circling with your entire arm, and then pull the same spin in to just your fingers, and make the stick draw flat circles on your side.
-choke up the the middle of the stick.
-keep spinning, keep focusing on the far end.
Tah dah! you are spinning sticks now.

bigwig's drummer used to pour lighter fluid on his cymbals and play with them on fire.

that would've been a sight to see.

Took me ages to build up the confidence to spin my sticks during a show. But I do it alot now. Search youtube for stick spin, I think there is some videos there.

Don't do it.

I've gotten into this weird habit of spinning my left stick every fucking time I come off of a hit, and I can't stop it. It's rather annoying. Haha.

Well I may be too late to help you out, but check out Jeff Queen. He has some amazing stick tricks. Most of them are most practical for marching snare, but who knows. add a little creativity and they could be just as effective on a drum set.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOiU_ml7qJE <heres a little teaser video for you guys.
http://www.vicfirth.com/artists/queen.html <this is his artist page for vicfirth, and while I don't have the playing with sticks book, it seems to be full of great tricks. (also look at video 3. playing on your arm will definatly get the crowd interested)

It's all about practice, it depends how secure you are with the beat your currently playing, if your playing a beat that takes some energy then spinning in between is gonna hurt your concentration. Anberlin generally doesn't have difficult beats.
