I'm doing my 3rd quarter English Research paper on the independent music scene, mainly about the scene in New Jersey from the Mid-Late nineties to early 2000's. My thesis is basically that these bands that were writing about failed relationships and feeling alone united a group of kids because they could all relate to the music. I'm trying to prove that music brings people together. Does anyone know of any books or DVDs (besides bastards of young, i already have it) that I should look into that talk about this music scene or have stories about it etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Check out "The Scene Mentality" by Jacob Young. Really great book about the current scene and culture. Will probably help you with your project.

Thanks dude. Do you have an idea where I can find a copy of this book? I just searched Borders.com and they don't seem to have it.

New Brunswick, New Jersey, Goodbye by Ronen Kaufmann. It's not necessarily a straight up: "And this band did this, etc." It's more of a guy's chronology of a few years of him in the New Brunswick scene circa mid 90's. It's an easy read, can be found in most book stores, and you'll about bands like The Bouncing Souls, The Degenerics, Lifetime, and he even talks about Geoff Rickley and Chris Conley when they were both starting out.

Thanks dude. Do you have an idea where I can find a copy of this book? I just searched Borders.com and they don't seem to have it. Probably because I made it up. But there is an actual real life book called "Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide To Emo Culture". Here's the amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Everybody-Hurts-Essential-Guide-Culture/dp/0061195391

would have loved to have been a part of that scene. getting kids to come out to shows anymore is like pulling teeth.

Do your part to save the scene and stop going to the shows.

your thesis is completely wrong but whatever, good luck.

High School is great. You can come up with whatever thesis you want. Back it with a few flimsy arguments, ignore anything going against the thesis and as long as it looks like it took more than ten minutes to write, you get an A.

this doesn't really have to do with books per say but last night, at a local show where i live, a "hardcore" kid that was a total douche bag jumped on a girl and fell on her, therefore her boyfriend confronted the kid for hurting his girl. after that, the hardcore kid got 6 of his other hardcore tough guy friends and decided to fight the boyfriend. the hardcore boy swung and the boyfriend ducked and the girlfriend ended up getting punched straight in the face. this kind of scenario happens at almost every show around here, therefore, no one wants to go anymore. that and 14 year old sluts. put that in your paper.

you really should think about your thesis in this paper. kids brought together by broken relationships? How is this at all different than what musicians have been singing about ever since music stopped being all about jesus? now if you want to say the scene developed out of shared alienation, you'd have a point and there are articles written that interview people like geoff from thursday and the dudes in my chemical romance who say the same thing.

What you stated about the shared alienation is more what I'm writing about. I think I just worded it weird in my original post.
