In the fall of 2003, Boys Night Out released their debut cd, Make Yourself Sick, which was an album that seemed it was trying way to hard to match the success Fall Out Boy had, using out of place screaming (although BNO uses it ALOT more) and song titles that were much longer than they needed to be ("I Got Punched In The Nose For Sticking My Face In Other People's Business", "The Subtelties That Make Mass Murderers Out Of Otherwise Decent Human Beings", etc.). While it was catchy, the album had very little staying power with me, and I quickly forgot about it. Now, almost two years later, the boys are back with a new member (Kara Dupuy, Synth and Vocals), shorter song titles (one word only for each song), and a great new sound that is sure to satisfy fans of both pop-punk and hardcore alike.

The album is a story written by guitarist/vocalist Jeff Davis, a "dark yet surprisingly empathetic tale of love, murder, mental anguish and creative reawakening". With concept albums seeming to be the "in" thing this year (Armor For Sleep, The Mars Volta, Jack's Mannequin, Gatsby's American Dream...I could go on forever), my first thought when I picked up this album was that it was another attempt by this band to ride the coattails of what was popular in the emo/screamo scene right now. But they proved me wrong. "Dreaming" shows right away how much lead singer Connor Lovat-Fraser's voice has improved since their last album...and it also sounds eerily similar to that of Ben Jorgensen from Armor For Sleep. This is not a bad thing. His voice is great, and shows he's matured. "Purging" is a much harder song which focuses it's power more on screams, but the screaming has also improved since the last album, and it's also not just thrown in their because it's popular right now. This is also when you first really notice the synth, and it adds a very cool effect to the song. "Relapsing" is my favorite song on the record. It starts out very mellow, with synth player Kara singing "Last call at the hospital you slept through it all...", followed by what seems like a reply by Connor, and it goes like this throughout the song. It reminds me a lot of the pair of songs on the last FATA album, "The Fiction We Live" and "Autumn's Monologue". This is a beautifully written song and has a very climax-type sound, like the story is winding down.

I really found very few problems with this album. A couple songs, like "Disintegrating" and "Healing" I don't find myself listening to that often, but I think that's just because the record is so good I find it hard to take songs off repeat. This album is a huge step for the band, not a "Deja" step, but it's for sure one of the top 20 of the year for me. The guys (and now girl) grew up and brought the rock.

That was such a shitty review. They weren't "trying to hard" to be Fall Out Boy with Make Yourself Sick. I think Trainwreck is awesome and that the story is pretty cool, but I still think MYS is a better album.
