View Full Version : Bands that took a while to get into.

Pretty straight forward. What are some of the bands or albums that took you more than one listen to really "get into".

For me, i would say the latest Spill Canvas cd. At first i thought it was just straight forward rock that didnt really sound like their past 3 cds(sort of Mae's Singularity). Then after a couple listens i realized how great the lyrics were and everything just fell into place.

As for a band, i would say Bright Eyes and Alkaline Trio. For each band, i would like a couple songs off of one or two cds but after a while i was really diggin them, not so much Bright Eyes anymore though.

I have listened to Astronautalis' Pomegranate the last few days, and it has taken a few listens to really get used to it. the more i listen though, the more I want to put it on again.

Took me years to get into Bright Eyes after someone sent me songs from them when I was in the 7th grade. Probably when I started dating girls in high school is when the music really hit me.

Louder Now - Taking Back Sunday

I really didn't like most of the songs, like Divine Intervention and Miami. But after a while, it became one of my favorites. Still not as good as TAYF though

no matter how hard i try, i cannot get into music that was around before i was born (1984). So i DO NOT know how some of these bands with members my age say their influences are the Beatles or Zepplin or whoever.

Just kinda trendy to include the biggest bands of all time as your influences. i wanna see a metal band that says GWAR is they're influence, but that wont happend so they will pick Zepplin because they "started" the hard rock genre.

Side note, does Cedric Bixler Zavala note MC5 as an influence? Check out live videos from that band on you tube, the lead singer has a huge fro (hes a white guy) and dances the same way as Cedric does. Its freakin crazy cuz it was back in 68.

The music isnt even remotely the same so he probably doesn't list them as an influence. I doubt people list anyone who influenced their stage moves as an influence, or at least that's exceedingly rare.

My Bloody Valentine
Propagandhi
Tom Waits
Andrew jackson jihad
virtually everything else i listen to

Definatley When Your Heart Stops Beating (CD) by +44. I bought it, then kinda got into When Your Heart Stops Beating (song), but then I loved little death, and then i liked more songs, and now I'm a believer.

Although blink-182 was better. But that isnt what this is about

When I was younger, so I wouldn't listen to overly prurient lyrics (Say Anything), ANYthing with screaming (Hawthorne Heights, 30 Seconds To Mars), or songs with profanity in the titles (Cobra Starship, Taking Back Sunday). Yes, it was lame. xD

But now I love all of those bands.

A Skylit Drive and blessthefall. Of course I didn't start really liking blessthefall until their singer left.

That would make sense then. I just know that MC5 doesn't seem to have effected the Volta sound at all.

It took me a long time to really get into Thursday. When my friend recommended me to them I gave them a listen and didn't really much care for Geoff, but after really giving them a listen I was amazed at how few bands sounded like them and so a new Thursday fan was born.

usually when this happens its because i wasnt open to it at first, like i listened to them when i was 14 or 15 but it wasnt pop-punk so i rejected it, and then came back to it when i was 16 or 17 and loved it. but i never listen to it countless times in a row just because i wish i liked it.

Hmm gotcha. I'm curious since i got into them from my "Drive-Thru" records phase, when they had released The Room's Too Cold. I'm not a huge fan of the Ep before, so i can understand being turned off hearing a few of those songs, but i loved The Room's Too Cold.
