View Full Version : Better Blink-182 Vocalist

Disregard +44, Box Car Racer, and Angels And Airwaves. Out of all the songs that Blink-182 wrote and recorded, who sings the better songs? Who has the better voice?

Tom is the only reason blink 182 got anywhere they started off as a mediocre punk band when mark was singing then tom started singing in more songs and they hit off huge... and i personally do not like marks voice..

Was it Tom's singing or the lineup change of adding Barker to the roster?

Good question, but I would definitely say Tom's voice. Travis definitely added to their popularity on the grand scheme of things though.
Edit: Mark's winning? What the hell?
Edit: I guess Tom is probably the reason people love the band, and the reason people hate the band...

the consensus back then among me and my friends was that mark totally had the better voice. I always liked em both though. same with alkaline trio. i can't imagine either band not having two voices.

That's interesting...I always thought Mark's voice was too "normal" to be respected so much, and that Tom gave the band a really defined image.

Agreed. I like Skiba's voice more, but if Dan didn't also sing lead, it wouldn't be the same.

tom's voice is so distinctive, and has matured with every album blink made, so for me tom was the better vocalist for the band and their success.
what isn't taken into account on this is +44. Mark sings some great melodies on that album, and on some songs he sounds amazing. I've never heard him sing as high before, and he sounds like such a strong vocalist.

I always liked Toms voice more. It's more original. That doesn't take away from the fact that I do love Marks and Blink would not be the same without either of them. Like someone else said it's the same for Alk3. I couldn't see Alkaline Trio only having one singer. That would just be weird. I couldn't pick my fav out of Skiba and Dan because both are different and very distinct.

I also feel like Tom might get a little fucked over on this poll. I'm willing to bet some people on this site are bitter over the breakup being his fault(which is also why some people never gave AVA a chance) and are voting Mark out of principle.

tom has a voice you either love or hate, mark is one that most people generally like. i for one think tom is limited. marks can pack more emotion too (see Stockholm Syndrome)

crappy and generic songwriting is why blink started off as a mediocre punk band. adam's song, whats my age again, the rock show and dammit were four of their biggest songs led by mark. the two big "tom only" songs were first date and all the small things. the rest of their big (and better) singles were the one's that were split vocals.
i agree with those who say that they were best with the tandem singing though.

Most live recordings (and hearing both sing live) Tom just sounds horrid. Mark is in no way perfect, but his voice is more pleasant to my ears, and he's on more than Tom is.
EDIT: I just want it to be known that on recorded versions, the exchanging of vocals on single songs is always awesome, and they should've done it way more.

I voted mark, but I definitely prefer songs where they both sing equally. Thats one of the best parts of blink, they never had a "front man" which is one of the major problems with both +44 and AVA, theres no dynamic just one person controlling the show.

Mark. Toms voice is kind of annoying.
They sound the best when they sing together. Like at the end of Feeling This.
Good poll.
If I could I'd say both... by themselves in songs it's nothing special (Mark's voice is undistinctive, Tom's is nasally), but put them in a song together and their quirks work so well.
Overall I probably like Mark's songs best.

the songs with tom delonge have seemed to be better ones overall. i think tom is better for those upbeat poppunk songs, and that was when blink was at their best.

lol I love your avatar.
Blink was special because they had both vocalists. Their voices complemented each other. One was high, and the other was low. it made for awesome range. I also really love the songs where they sing together and harmonize with each other. Like the end chorus on 'Feeling This'.

See, I love them both being the huge Blink fan I am. I think its like Taking Back Sunday. One voice isn't as good without the other. Fantastic example of this is in Stockholm Syndrome. Their voices mix so well together. I do think that Tom gets the shaft though because of the entire band breakup, so I think this poll might go a little biased to Mark. I went Tom, even though I still love Mark.

Dammit, Josie, Apple Shampoo, What's My Age Again?, Adam's Song, Rock Show, Carousel and M&M's are my favourite Blink songs of all of them, only one is a Tom song...so Mark wins it for me.

In Blink, Mark had much better vocals. But I think Tom has really improved his voice with AVA. Even live he sounds much better than he used to. I suppose Mark still has a better voice though. I just prefer Tom's because it's unique.

Tom does have quite a range with his voice. He pulls off different types of songs nicely. :-d Mark's voice may be BETTER (though it is a bit monotone; it is so smooth), I definitely prefer Tom's.

Mark.
Tom has a whiny bitch voice. :( It grows progressively whinier. It was the right amount of whiny in like First Date, but it got way too whiny in like I'm lost without you.
I voted for Tom. His voice has a certain character to it that I've always enjoyed. It is a bit nasally and not always on key live, but I actually enjoy that. I've never listened to Blink 182 as musical geniuses. In fact, my favorite album of theirs is Dude Ranch because their song-writing dramatically improved but still retained that gritty home-made feel. Mark is probably a better singer, but Tom's keeps my attention better.
Definitely Mark. Travis's voice sounds good produced, but I've heard him live numerous times and he can't sing worth shit.
Travis doesn't sing silly.
