Hey guys. Hope you had a swell weekend. Today I am joined by the incomparable FullForever69, as he has some interesting recommendations for you!

Garett’s Recs

Monty (http://www.purevolume.com/monty)- If you read my review (http://www.absolutepunk.net/reviews.php?action=viewarticle&artid=189) of their new album, The Red Shift, then you already know I think this band has a really great sound. They mesh together so many different elements and come out with something that just truly rocks your face off. Definitely give a listen, I think you’ll like them.

Maria Taylor (http://www.saddle-creek.com/html/mariataylor_frame.html)- This amazingly talented woman has worked with so many spectacular artists throughout her career and is most noted for being one half of the indie duo Azure Ray. However, her latest effort, a solo record titled 11:11, is really an inspired piece of work. Anything with Maria’s vocals is obviously going to be sweepingly beautiful, and her songwriting skills are top notch. Check it outttt.

The Spill Canvas (http://www.purevolume.com/thespillcanvas)- I gotta holla at Jason, while maybe this isn’t my album of the year, it’s really incredible. One of those records that the more you listen the more you fall in love with it. The vocals are freakin on target and gorgeous and the music is beyond anything I would have expected from this band. I’m impressed, and I love listening to One Fell Swoop.

Also a I’ve seen a lot of talk scattered throughout our boards about Tilly and the Wall (http://www.tillyandthewall.com/) and how they don’t get enough attention, and it’s true. If you like anything indie, especially on the poppier side, Tilly and the Wall are sure to catch your ear. Just really fun, amusing, and lovely indie tunes. Arrangements include a tap dancer and a garbage can for percussion!

BUT MY BIGGEST RECOMMENDATION: You may have heard of or seen the new Comedy Central show entitled STELLA (http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/stella/index.jhtml). WATCH IT WATCH IT WATCH IT. Tuesday Nights 10:30/9:30c. These guys built up a following with their uniquely absurd yet hilarious brand of comedy through a series of online short films and various underground comedy performances. These are the same guys that brought you The State and Wet Hot American Summer! Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain. At first you might think... what the fuck am I watching? But trust me, take a moment to enjoy it, this is some of the best comedy out right now.

*oh and i gotta throw it up for Coheed, their new song and new comic book are both fucking awesome and now everyone remembers why we loveeee Coheed! yayyyyyy

FullForever69's Recs

The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up: (http://www.jypu.net/) The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up are a five piece musical group. They live and record and play shows on the west coast of the United States and hope to one day play for you, wherever you may be. They think of you often and sometimes write love letters to you that they are too shy to send..

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: (http://clapyourhandssayyeah.com/shows.php) I can’t say enough good things about this band, and I’m not going to waste your time making lazy comparisons to other bands. If you’ve already heard of them, they deserve all of the hype and much more.

Wolf Parade: (http://www.newmusiccanada.com/genres/artist.cfm?Band_Id=11211) The next big thing to hit the indie scene… I was expecting more new songs on their full length, but I can’t complain. I can't conjure up a decent description, but I assure you, its good....

Sufjan Stevens: (http://www.sufjan.com/) I’m sure you’ve all heard of him by now. Illinois blew me away; I didn’t think he could top “Greetings from Michigan”, but IMO he did it with this record. This guy is amazing and one can only wonder how much he can improve at such a young age.

Windsor For the Derby: (http://www.windsorforthederby.com/) is amazing. Their music is both sparse and layered at the same time. If Yo La Tengo was a post-rock band, it would probably sound pretty close to this. Their new album is littered with lush, ethereal soundscapes. Listen to this band!!!

Andrew Bird: (http://www.andrewbird.net/) Forget the violin. Forget the classical background. As troubadour Andrew Bird puts it, “At this point the violin just happens to be the instrument I have on hand to make the sounds that I hear. I like to abuse it and pull as many sounds out of it as I can.” Bird is a masterful and intuitive singer / songwriter, and what he does while performing—alternately plucking and bowing his violin, then immediately sampling the results, layering the sounds with guitar, whistling, glockenspiel and vocals—bears little resemblance to what most people might expect. It’s only one of several devices in his arsenal of instruments, melodies, and imaginative wordplay.

Pas/Cal: (http://www.pascalgoespop.com/) The spark that ignited Pas/Cal's pop flame was provided by Gene Corduroy's dubious dare to the group: improvise a pop song with the wit, charm and craft of a masterwork that had been labored over for months. The challenge proved fruitful and rewarding, spurring on more efforts to create smart pop pieces for the subversive set. Thus was planted the seed that germinated into the phenomenon we know today.

Yeah that's where I saw them for the first time too. It was incredible.
I'd downloaded the album from the Team Love site before that, but man, it was just so amazing live.

Stella is pretty disappointing...that writing team was always pretty good at straddling the line between random and stupid; this just oversteps it.

Well the shorts were a little different because well... they were shorts, and they could compress the material. But now they have to hold out for a 30 minute episode so there are bound to be some moments of just pure stupidness, but I think it's so genius. Somehow they just nail so many subtle social imitations that I would never even think of. I think it takes a certain type of comedy fan to swallow the sillyness and enjoy the real backbone of the humor. But I understand your opinion.

Not feeling the hype on either one of these bands. My music tastes seem to disagree with most people's more and more every day.

It's been two months since I got Maria Taylor's record and it's still in regular rotation for me. I'm actually listening to that right now along with Orenda' s album, and I still can't decide which one I like more. I was initially upset about the Azure Ray hiatus, but now, not so much.

Tilly =) I just wish people would continue to be happy and nice when talking about them. The extra attention they've gotten since the Bright Eyes ['05] tour has led to a lot of people being assholes. And how can you be an asshole about one of the happiest, cutest, nicest bands around? I don't get it.

I don't get the hype surrounding Clap Your Hands Say Yeah either, Scott. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I don't think they're awful, but I wouldn't listen to them again.

I wish I had cable. I got a dvd of the first episode of Stella with a magazine and I though it was really funny. To those who liked it, have the other episodes been as good as the first?

Illinois is my favorite album by Sufjan too. I can't wait for his show in September.

Tilly & the Wall is getting some much-deserved loved around here. Glad to see it. I saw them open for Rilo Kiley in '04 and they were great. I've definitely been listening to them quite a bit this week.

And yes, the Sufjan album is so incredibly good.

Yes, the first episode was only the beginning. The show has gotten progressively better! If you thought the pilot was funny you should definitely look into seeing more Stella. It's soooo good!

And where did you get Orenda's album!? You lucky duck... PM me if you see this.

thanks Blankster and Lerok for the kind comments.

Blankster if you want to hear more of pas/cal, or any of the other bands just let me know and I'll hook you up. I'm not sure if you've heard the new Jim Yoshii Pile-Up CD, but its amazing.

I missed all of the episodes, because I work way too much. Did you see the Andy Milonakis show? It's pretty fucking lame, but interesting at the same time, like a trainwreck you can't look away from... I don't think I'll watch that show again, but i definitely want to check out Stella... and thanks for putting me on your recs, i love to spread new music. Props for your recs too, they were good.
