View Full Version : Tips for holding down frets
So I'm having difficulty holding down notes on my guitar with my little finger. Every time I always fumble or miss or don't press down hard enough.
Anyone got any tips for this?
Same here, I used to not be able to do it at all, i still have some trouble every now and then. Just keep using that finger and with time that muscle will build and you won't have trouble anymore.

Practice, practice, practice. That's about all that'll do it. The first month or two I played my fingers could barely move on the fretboard, let alone hold down the notes. Once you do it long enough it'll become second nature.
Are you having trouble on chords, or on playing individual notes?
It's more like playing melodies, where I have to use my little finger. I don't have much of a problem with chords anymore with my little finger involved, I've gotten used to holding it down. It's just hard to put pressure down when I have to play a note with my little finger in certain riffs

You just have to exercise it by playing alot. Eventually you will get the hang of it.

i was liek that, i've gotten to the point where its not a problem to hold down notes on the bass, and until about a month ago the action on my bass was rediculously high, thats probably why i got used to it.

Just practice pentatonic/diatonic scales a whole lot, with the correct fingering (middle finger on 3rd, pinky on 5th fret) and your pinky will get alot stronger and used to fingering.

just keep using your pinky when practicing scales and such. stick with it. practice as much as you can. it's really the best & only way to build the strength & accuracy. one day, youll play with your pinky much more smoothly all of a sudden. just takes the time & practice. best of luck.

If I can, I press my ring finger on top of my pinky. It's just a habit I formed when teaching myself how to play to help my pinky hold down the string.

... Shouldn't this be obvious?
You practice. Play scales, play small melodic riffs. Just edge that finger on. Not rocket science.

I've always wondered this, what is action on a guitar or bass.

I've always wondered this, what is action on a guitar or bass. It's the distance the strings are above the fretboard. I would draw it but have no way of doing it.

As most people are saying just to practice, i'll say that as well cos that's how i find i improve on things in terms of playing guitar
i got used to using my pinky by practicing this riff over and over.

When you guys play power chords, do you just use your index and third finger or do you use your index, third and little finger? I inly use the two fingers as its so much easier, but my friend uses his little finger aswell which seems like a good idea to get used to using it more often.
i use...index, ring finger, and pinky. you get a much clearer sound/

I always have used all three. It seems like it would be hard to use just the two.
