View Full Version : Kings Of Leon: USA doesn't know of their greatness

I live in the tiny country of NZ so I'm well accustomed to the awesomness of the band Kings Of Leon.

But it seems like only Australia, NZ and the UK understand this intricate and musically brilliant band.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't met a single American (and I know a few) that enjoys the band. Their excuse is they "don't get it" or "they're annoying".

I understand the latter excuse, but serioulsy guys, you're missing out!!

I'm gonna get so much hate mail for this...

they are very popular in America for their style. But a lot of Americans don't listen to them because either

a. they sound like every other indie band in America already
or
b. they suck to American indie hipsters because they are too popular

I'd say a combo of both.

aah... i get it now

wow American indie-lovers are hard to please....

KOL aren't considered indie in NZ - they're too main stream over here

theyre just a good rock band really. and i bet any money they bummed the debut album in the states in the indie scene

I've been trying to get into them lately. I like their last two albums for the most part; nothing I'd listen to all the time though.

Sometimes I think I'm the only one here who doesn't really like them. They are alright but I don't get all the fuss.

theyre not really the kind of band to go jumping around like Busted. i prefer them to just stand and play

Possibly the most overrated band in the world right now.

its not their fault really, once the yob audience and the i like rock music as long as its foo fighters and coldplay audience latch onto a band, it can only mean lots and lots of media coverage and a lot of more annoying fans

Paulb-182
01/12/09, 04:58 AM
haha exactly, just like people say about Oasis and Foo Fighters. when all foo fighters can do is ruin their own songs, and all Oasis can do is live off a few good tracks made in the mid 90's and ignore my favourite album of theirs as if it were never made.

I'm sure the same fate awaits Kings Of Leon. huge stadium tours and a rehashing of the same song over and over to keep the fickle radio 1 listener on side

I just moved to Australia recently (from America) and it seems like pretty much everybody here loves them...

Kings of Leon have such a generic southern vibe in their music;
I'll skip them and listen to more My Morning Jacket.

i've never heard anyone call them groundbreaking, and you can be an awesome band just playing rock songs. they play awesome rock songs.

Their albums always seem to be full of really boring filler and then some great tracks mixed in. Because of the Times is the album that goes closest to being very good I would say.

They are great live and their greatest hits, when it is released, will be very good but I do think they are overrated, in the UK at least.

yeah, well theyre pretty much the biggest band in england right now. i've been into them since the debut since theyve always had a bit of hype around them here.

i think their popularity is deserved though

i hope they get even bigger!

Their singles do well on rock radio, but they can't seem to translate that to much else success in terms of sales.

I couldn't disagree more, their first two albums are easily their best. Aha Shake Heartbreak is probably my favourite but it's pretty close. The newest effort is by far their worst, I understand they wanted to achieve a bigger sound because they want to be a bigger band, but I prefer the more low-key songs. Plus the production on the new album really isn't to my taste.

Yeah, no problem. "Sex On Fire" has been the #1 Modern Rock radio hit the past few weeks (well, at least for one week it was); I'm not a radio guy either, but I keep an eye on charts and sales. They're much bigger in European countries, which is somewhat ironic since they based themselves off an American-made classic rock sound.

"Sex On Fire" is probably one of my lest favorite songs on the album. But I think that they way they are bigger works the same way British bands do in America. They become over saturated with it, but we only hear a small amount of it, and it gets really popular over here. But I'm glad that they are seeing major success somewhere.
