is there an instrument that you wish you could play, and if so, what and why.

I'm a bassist. I've been a bassist for 8 years now. Naturally I play a little guitar too, but it's a pretty basic understanding that I have which comes from all the time spent playing bass.

If I could play any other instrument, It'd be piano. I wish my parents had forced piano lessons on me when I was younger, mostly so I'd have a better understanding of music theory and actually be able to sight read music. It would make me a better musician. Plus, I'd be able to play piano, which is a gorgeous sounding instrument and an incredibly versatile one as well.

I wanted to play slide trombone when I was in 3rd grade, but my parents straight up said no. So lame.

I play bass and a little guitar and piano. I wish I was better at piano, but I never took lessons. I've always wanted to learn drums. I mean, I can keep a beat, but I just want to be able to wail on a drumset. I also want to learn trumpet.

or guitar.
Just because they seem more interesting, pretty, and you can sing while you play hah, even though I can't sing I think it would be fun.

I've been playing flute for almost 8 years. haha. It's boringgg, it was fun and I like the sound, plus I picked up at reading music and playing really well.
But no one will teach me anything else, and I can't pay for lessons.
:|
I tried teaching myself both, but that's too hard.

I play a little guitar and I used to be able to play the flute back in middle school. I always wanted to learn to play piano but for various reasons growing up I was unable to take lessons.

Piano can get you laid too, yo.

But I've been playing guitar for 3 years I think, and I've always wanted to play bass. I was gonna get one for Chrismtas this year but I spent all my money on chinese food and a hoodie.

:P

I'd love to play drums too

i'd love to play fiddle or banjo. i'm a sucker for solid bluegrass and grew up listening to that sort of thing. i'd give my left nut to start a Nickel Creek-esque band, i think it'd be so much fun.

i'm still working on playing guitar; i've been getting better, but i stilll have problems playing chords. i can handle basic lead parts, no problem. but i still have my piano and bass, so it's not like i NEED to know guitar at this point.

i would also love to play harmonica and bagpipes, just because i think their sounds are just gorgeous haha

I play drums and a little bit of guitar and bass.
I want to learn how to actually play acoustic guitar, I thinkit's one of the best instruments.

it seems like everyone wants to play piano. it really should be the starting point for everyone. you'll get a solid foundation in the technical aspect of music AND get that left hand right hand independance which is vital for tapping.

I have a shitty drum set that i bought at target on clearance for like 50 bucks. it sucks, but i'm a halfway decent drummer. i wish i was good though. drums are fun as hell to just sit back and bang away at.

the banjo plucking in bluegrass music always blows my mind. i don't even have that kind of independance in my fingers, let alone both hands as well as the stamina to keep that shit up for an entire song.

and yeah, when someone knows how to actually play the harmonica it's beautiful.

yeah, it's my biggest frustration. it's the main reason i call myself a bassist instead of a musician.

you couldn't be more right. getting into piano before anything else starting at the age of 11 has given me such a massive head start as far as music is concerned and i was able to translate that into guitar no problem without any lessons. i mean piano really is the root instrument and once you're able to translate that into something else it sort of gives you this confidence that you can learn any instrument that you want if you enjoy practicing that instrument. it's never too late man, you should get into piano lessons.

as for me im picking up a violin ASAP and teaching myself, while flute, drums, and bass guitar (i want to be smooth playing it without a pick) are all on my to do list.

ive never even touched sheet music for guitar but it is definitely good from a songwriting perspective to have that background that ive had for piano.

Piano, mainly so I could play my favorite song that just has piano and vocals. Also I would love to be able to play guitar to a high standard.

I used to be able to play piano and drums to a decent standard... I wish I was still playing those and improving. I'm also making it one of my goals in life to be competent at 10 or more instruments at once.

I play guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele, but my favorite lead instruments would definitely have to be flute and saxophone, so learning those would be fantastic. Once you start picking up instruments, you can't stop. In response to the post earlier, I would also say that blues haromica would be rad.

Piano and guitar are two of the easiest instruments to teach yourself to play. Personally, I would love to know how to play violin, oddly enough haha. Also, I'd like to play harp.

Buy a cheap squier bass and get tabs and do it. If you can play guitar, you've the basic understanding of the bass, you have to introduce new technique to it, and play with your fingers. You've got the drive and desire, so you can pretty much do it.

piano is easy to learn to doodle on but if you want to play legitimiate classical pieces it would be hard as fuck to teach yourself. it is really difficult to train your non-dominant hand to be dexterous enough to play eighth or sixteenth note melodies smoothly and evenly (because both hands have to at some point or another). it is really difficult to learn to be polyrhythmic since it's not always one hand is rhythm and one hand is melody sometimes its two different melodies playing at the same time. it is really difficult to work up the strength of all five fingers and stretch your tendons to the point where your ring finger and pinky can move as fluently and independantly as your other three fingers. it is difficult to get used to your hands doing runs up and down the keyboard since you only have five fingers and you have to learn to be efficient at crossing your fingers over each other. if anyone wanted to SERIOUSLY pick up piano i would suggest lessons because an instructor knows how to find pieces and exercises to work with these things in the most efficient way possible.

If I could learn any instrument, it would be acoustic guitar. I already play Bass and drums though, and I honestly wish I was better at these two haha.

I wish I was an amazing vocalist, if that counts.

if you have a good sense of pitch, you can train yourself. what i did was record myself singing songs of other bands, experimenting with different tones (for example singing breathy, thinning out my voice, singing as full bodied as possible, singing a little raspy, etc.), the way i was pronouncing certain syllables, trying to sing from different places in my throat and chest, and often times imitating that vocalist's voice and delivery. and i would keep rerecording that song until i felt ive made an improvement. then i would send that file to several of my close friends and ask for constructive criticism and gradually it really helps you find a method and style of singing that works for you, and it also helps you sing with better tones and get much more control over your voice. not saying im an amazing vocalist by any means, i definitely dont think i am, but over a few years ive come a long way from being a 14-year old who sings awkwardly out of the back of his throat, in a way that almost sounds like hes trying to swallow his own voice (think michael bolton but 10 times worse) with unnatural syllables, to someone with a natural and confident sounding voice passable enough to front a band. if you dont have a good sense of pitch im pretty sure you can learn it but that probably requires assisted training.

I mean to teach yourself to proficient. I taught myself both piano and guitar but I sure as hell can't play any classical guitar pieces and I can only struggle through a few on piano. But yes, lessons are really good to get for piano because being knowledgeable on the keys improves every other instrument one plays.
