Castledoor - 'Til We Sink
Record Label: Seven Inch Project
Release Date: July 29, 2008
Since 2006, the only thing that we've gotten to hear from Castledoor is a grand total of eleven songs, two of which were interludes. There are some bands that can do this and get away with it, but when you're writing such wondrously catchy and beautiful songs, it's a crime. There's not a single track they've released yet that's skippable or even just OK. Each one is just as good as the next, and you can be sure that the previous one was one hell of a song.
The 'Til We Sink EP is the second of two installments in the Castledoor legacy. It contains only 3 tracks, and runs only ten and a half minutes. However, in this ten minutes of music with which they've supplied us, there's not a second worth skipping. This is one example where "quality over quantity" holds true. That's not to say I wouldn't love to hear more from these guys; in fact, I'm basically stalking their Myspace waiting to see what's going to come out of their current recording session.
In ten minutes, 'Til We Sink changes from upbeat, catchy, "indie"-infused rock sound of "Dumpster Diving" to the oh-so-sweet melody of "Nightlight" and finally to the vulnerable sound of "We Will." Castledoor seems to excel at literally everything. There's the soft but assured vocals, the great musicianship, and the lyrics that I, for one, find entrancing. My favorites are from "Nightlight," in which the vocalist softly pleads, "My lord, why does your fence electrocute? And my lord, if heaven is free to get in/ then my lord, why is your guest book so thin?" This whole song takes this kind of intonation, and it's a perfect indication of the album: simply amazing.
"Amazing" isn't a word I throw around, and anyone that has read more than one of my reviews should know that. This EP, as well as 2006's Follow the Dove are easily the greatest discoveries I made last year. 'Til We Sink is a fantastic EP, and though short, is more worth your time than anything else you've been listening to. Be careful though, listening to this EP instantly arouses the same kind of longing for new material that I'm currently suffering through. So far, I've yet to find a band who has delivered as consistently as Castledoor, and I truly can't wait to see what else they can release.
