Yo, it's fucking coming along! I can't wait. This is hands down Hunter's best book (it's not up for debate), and I am so glad they're finally putting it into production.

Fear and Loathing... is his best book and it isn't even close. The Rum Diary is good, but it was written when he was young and hadn't really developed his voice yet.

If you don't know Thompson, then you're a lost cause. If you do know him, then you'd know he never wanted to be a gonzo journalist. He wanted to be a fiction writer. Journalism just paid the bills. Rum Diary stands as his only full-out fiction novel. This is the book he always wanted to write, to define himself as as a writer, that's why it took him so long to publish it. Thompson is not Raoule Duke, no matter how much you wish he would be. This book and, hopefully movie, is about a kid trying to find his way, trying to find his voice, and taking a couple detoures and off-ramps on his way to legend. We are not in fear and Loathing territory. We're barely in Hell's Angels territory. Rum Diary is about a man of ambition trying to find his place in this messed up world. Don't expect anymore, and don't expect any less.

The Rum Diary is good, but it was written when he was young and hadn't really developed his voice yet.As someone who has read both books I can say that that's an erroneous statement, I think that yes, they aren't even close, just that you're misapplying one for the other. I've seen you say that Wild at Heart is the best Lynch and now this. Discomfited is an adequate word for my feelings on all of that.

I don't even remember saying this, but I stand by my statement whole-heartedly. And FINALLY, a release date.

Cause my other one still had a Christmas hat on it. I don't think we can be best friends forever who occasionally quote each other on Absolutepunk.net anymore if you don't love my new one.

It was a scanned picture from an issue of Fangoria from the 80's that I have like 12 GB worth of. It'll take forever to find it again. It's lost, darlin'!

Figures I'd be at work when I see a trailer has been released. Excited to finally check out some footage though. Can't wait to see this movie; I wish I had time to read the book again, but I know that I won't.

Definitely excited for this, I'm teaching a Lit into Film class in the fall and have worked the book and a class trip to see this in the theatre into the lesson plan.

Surprised there hasn't been more talk about this around here.
Anyway, I was hoping for the best but the reviews are incredibly mediocre. Still want to see it.

Pretty excited to check this out. Probably not going until next weekend, though. There's only one other person I know that has read the book and wants to see this so I'm going to wait and go with him.

Enjoyed it quite a bit. Sort of lost me in the last thirty minutes, but definitely recommend it. The eyedrop drug scene is definitely end of the year list worthy.

I loved the book, I was excited for this for a while but previews aren't getting me all that excited. and no Heard n00dz? what. Chenault was naked like 80% of the book.

I'm a big Thompson fan, and I loved Fear and Loathing. This movie did nothing for me.
