I was just about to make this into a thread
http://www.nhl.com/nhlhq/cba/rules_changes072205.html
the center line hasn't been removed though.
"The blue lines and center line will remain at 12 inches in width. "
Pretty much they've increased the size of the offensive zones and have made rules to reduce stoppages. I thought the new "tag up" rule in regards to blue lines was interesting. Probably won't get used all too much but still sounds interesting.
"INSTIGATOR RULE
A player who instigates a fight in the final five minutes of a game will receive a game misconduct and an automatic one-game suspension. The length of suspension would double for each additional incident.
As well, the player's Coach will be fined $10,000 -- a fine that would double for each such incident. "
I really really like this...after the fiasco with Philly and Ottawa, I'm glad this has been put into play. Hockey constantly gets a bad rep cause of fights like that, players like Todd Bertuzzi and Marty Mcsorly...reducing some of the inherently obvious and unnecessary violence will make it more appealing I think.
I LOVE the new shootout rule, it'll really make games far more interesting in the regular season.

definitly i cant wait till the season starts.. if the info was wrong you can blame espn
I was at a P-Bruins game last season, and it went into over time, after overtime we were all pretty bummed cause a tie game kinda sucks... then they announce "after a short break there will be a shot out"... nearly shit my pants... that shoot out was the best thing EVER... especially for fans at the game, made it feel like a playoff game.... especially when people like Patrice Bergeron (almost rookie of the year 2 seasons ago) goes up and does fucking insane moves... seriously, cant wait to see some of the big name stars in shoot outs.. going to be awesome...
As for the fighting, im still pro violence, and fighting... makes the energy ten times as high... i think thats what seperates hockey from crap like football and baseketball

Ah I remember all the fights our team had when I played. We were the shitty team that never won any games but if you got in a fight with us, you got destroyed. Our team was basically the real life version of the Charleston Chiefs from Slapshot.

totally agree
and with the fights, I love it...but when you have these brawls during the last five minutes and when the coaches just put their enforcers on the ice...that serves absolutely no purpose other than showing how much of a sore loser you are. And like I mentioned, hopefully this will help end things like the Bertuzzi incident and the Mcsorley incident...the league needs less of that shit. Fighting is never gonna leave hockey (thank god)...and I really hope Bertuzzi gets what's coming to him, I can't stand players like him no matter how "skilled" they are.
aminorthreat55
07/22/05, 08:37 PM
so your team was pretty much the flyers in the 60s?
No, because we sucked way too much.
as for bertuzzi, to be honest, the guy gave him just as bad of a cheap shot right before, yea bertuzzi was retaliating, which is highly frowned upon, and from all outward appearences it was horrible... but honestly, it was a freak accident the guy got KOed from that one punch... i mean, when the BU kid slid into the boards broke his neck and was paralized, no one said give padded boards... Was the incident bad for hockey, yes and no, ALOT of publication from that (as in the fights with the crowd in baseketball) does it suck to be the guy that got his ass handed to him infront of the world, yes, but he was a mediocer player, who all season was giving cheap shots because he isnt as fast, cant keep up, and the only way he can is by holding, grabing, punching, slashing ect ect ect... yea, the guy got pummled, but the idea behind it wasnt to kill him, bertuzzi gave him a cheap shot that happened to turn into a freak accident.. the end... get over it, worse things have happened in hockey on purpose.
as for what the league needs, it needs all the publication it can get, hockey is not televised enough in the US, and they need a reason for people to tune in... as they say, no publicity is bad publicity...
WasteMyTime
07/23/05, 08:52 AM
well, actually...ther bertuzzi incident WAS bad plubicity...very bad. And you're right, there're worse things...like the McSorly thing...he's such a bastard for that. And the cheap shot you're referring to was on another player. No player should punch someone from behind and pounce on them...if that was done on the street, what would the reaction be? Cracking down on unnecessary violence is important to improving the game I think.
"If you have never chewed tobacco, drank a beer, or got into a fight, you're not a hockey player. If you are one than you're probably not any good." - Todd Bertuzzi
As for the new rules, I'm stoked. No blue line (essentially) means a change in the two-line pass rule. Smaller goalie pads = more goals. They're trying to make the game more exciting, kudos for that. I thought they might increase the size of the goals but that would be tough. I'm not going to be able to contain myself stepping into the Garden for the first time in years. Though I'm sure the Rangers will still suck. :(

You'd be surprised how much of it difference it makes. No more goalies like Garth Snow taking up the entire net.
yea, like the mighty ducks said "a quarter inch to the left, and i would have scored... yea but a quarter inch to the right and you would have missed completely"... hahah and i used to skate with garth snow back when he was still in college and skating on spring pond in wrentham

It's not all about that. They're trying to increase the amount of scoring and believe it or not, it makes a difference.

To say that is unfair and misleading. Both Football and Baseball used replacement players. Baseball also canceled the World Series and if it wasn't for Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa baseball would still be in the shitter.
As for the goalie padding, yes it will make the game more exciting and for a sport that is steeped in tradition its a big step. Compare Patrick Roy's pads from '86 to his pads in '03. Its quite a striking difference. With the skill the guys in the NHL have an extra inch or two is a HUGE thing.

the NHL is trying to produce another Gretzky or Lemieux or Jagr...just someone who will produce the stats to get the airtime on Sportscenter...they're trying to find that in Crosby...the game has changed to a low scoring, physical toughness type game and now they're trying to change it...the NHL wants to create another dynasty like the Oilers and Islanders from the 80s...I mean in the last decade, the devils, wings, and avalanche have won the cup more than once...but it was never consecutive...and the teams they defeated were flukes (ducks, canes)...we need a dynasty to save hockey.

agreed. we need a dynisty.. example would be the bulls look what they did for basketball
screw a dynansty, we need a bitter rivalry... the redsox have more fans in tampa then the fucking devil rays. Thats what we need 2 teams to be arch enemies... look at what it did for baseball, the past 2 seasons were 2 of the best in baseball, the Yankees beat the sox 2 years ago on a walk off home run, about 20 fights, mudslinging in interviews... then last season, yankees up 3 games to none, and the red sox come from behind... seriously, if it wasnt for that rivalry and bitter anomisity, no one woulda given a fuck about the yankees losing... so what im saying is, we need 2 teams to cheap shot eachother, fight eachother, beat eachother up, score lots of goals against eachother, and littarly HATE eachother... then hockey will rule the airwaves.
dyansties dont matter... look at the braves, who fucking cares about them, only in atlanta do people give a fuck about the braves, and they have won the division like, 20 years in a row.
aminorthreat55
07/27/05, 12:38 PM
Yeah, and they're trying to set those up by scheduling more in-division games. I always loved the "battle for Pennsylvania", Penguins and Flyers. Those are great games.

reason nobody cares about the braves is cause they only win the division..never the world series...
I love the rivalries around here...Rangers Isles, Rangers Devils, Rangers Flyers...Rivalries will definitely help the game and the league is helping promote that...but these rivalries were already there...the NHL was at it's peak during the Gretzky/Oilers days...or the Isles dynasty...we've had the rivalries lately (biggest being Avalanche/Red Wings but barely anyone knows that)...but it hasn't done the game much good...I think a dynasty and another player who can get over 110 points in a season is in need.
i want the whalers back... seriously, let me just start a team of brutes, like the 60s flyers, where its about 20 guys on a team, that can barely skate, but are all over 6'3" and 250lbs.. just taking EVERYONE out and instilling fear...

hahahaha that'd be pretty sweet but in a way, I dunno how that would help hockeys "image" in the mainstream. The last thing we need is to see headlines about brawls in every hockey game (but at least it'll get in the papers, hah)...I think spreading the bruteness around the league would help more but that's just me..
but like you mentioned with bringing back the Whalers...I swear...they should bring back all those teams...get rid of like...the Ducks, the Canes, the Panthers...why is there a hockey team in Arizona???? There should be teams in like...Saskatoon or Maine...get another team in minnesota...that would help the league I think.

Does someone want to explain to the Hockey Challenged kid in California what the blue and red lines mean?
red line in the center line, the blue lines are the ones on either side of it to the far end of one line is one teams zone, between the 2 blue lines is the nuetral zone, and the other end is the opposing teams zone... they are the markers for offsides... you cant pass more than 2 lines, so if your in your own zone, and you pass it to someone on the other side of the red line, your offsides... also the blue lines mark for offsides... if you cross the opposing teams blue line before the puck, your offsides... eliminating the redline would make the whole nuetralzone open for passing with out any offsides
NetNerdsRevenge
07/28/05, 05:29 PM
so by getting rid of the red line it opens the game up for more offense? Why not eliminate the blue lines, or do they want to keep the offsides intact?
spansen
07/28/05, 11:02 PM
i'm glad the league's coming back.
go pens!
with out the blue lines, you cant clear the puck from excessive offensive pressure, like on powerplays and stuff.. and if you elimate blue lines, you have absolutely no offsides, meaning you could have one guy stand in the middle of the other teams zone, waiting for a puck to come to him... makes it WAY to open, youd have scores like the NBA

hah that made me think of the classic fox commercial where you see a bunch of guys playing basketball and it says "basketball would be better..." and then a goalie standing up on the basketball rim blocking shots and it says "...if it were hockey" hahahaha.
but ya...I often don't see 2 line passes called...and when you're leading a rush into the opponent's zone, the players are pretty close together...but you are right, get ridding of the center line will help in regards to creating more breakaways and all that, so that's good.

well yeah that's great they aim for greater access with televised games. but how are they going to do it? they lost their only nationwide media contract (ESPN/ABC). so, if the games are only to be televised locally, for the local audience, how the hell is that greater access? just wondering... and kind of bitching, because i won't get to see ANY of my Sabres' games this year, living in denver and whatnot.

That was great rivalry. When those teams played you were gauranteed quality fights. Cluade Lemiuex and Darren McCarty got into some good fights and when Patrick Roy and Chris Osgood meeting at center ice to fight was amazing.
As to the rule changes about fighting, its not completely removed from the game and i don't think it ever will be. The are just trying to eliminate the end of games getting out of hand when one coach will send out all the goons to fight.
