I've been looking to buy a new amp that I can use in my room, so It doesnt have to be too loud. I am a little picky with quality and Ive decided not to cheap out and go for a tube combo. Any suggestions that arent rediculously expensive?
And does anyone have an opinion on Hybrids (tube/s.s.) like the marshall AVT's. I played one in a store and it seemed ok but i didnt really get to use it too long. Im really just a hobbyist/beginner and dont need anything crazy but i do want good tone. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

You won't find a good cheap tube amp brand new for a resonable price. My advice is go second hand, I have a 62' Fender Blues DeVille which has gone through multiple hands but only cost NZ$600.

It depends a lot what sound you're after. My Fender has brilliant crunch but cannot hold up for playing metal. It's not a metal amp. If you're after a metal sound perhaps a Marshall JCM Combo would suit your playing style. You get all the JCM glory but a bit cheaper.

Hybrids can be ok, the tube preamp does make them a step up from the standard amp but I still find the transistors give a slightly 'fake' sound.

Post what kind of style you're after in playing and i'll give you some more advice.

Well first off by cheap I mean under 800. So its not really cheap but shopping around Ive noticed Im not gonna get anything good for much less. As far as sound i would be playing punk but I would like some room with the overdrive to play with. Funeral For a Friend can get metal sounding at points. I dont know if Its my guitar or my amp but I cant get a good pinch harmonic sound out of it. I refuse to blame that on myself haha. What Im really looking for is an amp I can just put in my room that I can replicate a wide range of sounds with.

Fav. Bands to play along with.
Coheed and Cambria
Bouncing Souls
ALkaline Trio
Brand New
Finch
Every Time I Die
Jimmy Eat World
Vendetta Red

Any suggestions would be nice...

also there was a Marshall JCM 900 head on ebay that went for like 600 bucks. Do you think it would be stupid to get a head and then buy a 2x12 extention cab to hook it up to, I dont have the room nor need a halfstack in my 2 bedroom apartment. plus by the time Im done with that purchase it would be like 1000 bucks and I maybe should just go with a combo.

I need help as you can see.
thanks for any advice.

Try out the Fender Pro, Jr. It is a sweet little 10W tube combo. Just put the overdrive pedal you want in front of it for whatever sound you want. Good tone. Good volume. Good price. Don't be fooled either. For 10W that amp can overpower your whole apartment floor and possibly further. It's loud!

thanks for any advice.A JCM 900 would give you a pretty good range and easily suit your punk requirements. It is quite likely it is your current amp that is why you can't get very clear pinch harmonics. You need a lot of gain to pull them off.

A JCM900 would be a pretty good choice and if anything go for a 2X12. More and more guitartists are using 2X12's. They give a more responsive tone and have a more unique sound to them. Zack Wydle only uses 2 speakers in each of his 4X12 cabinets. You could try going for the head and cab seperately but they do make JCM/TSL combos with 2 12" speakers in them which will probably be slightly cheaper.

If you really want a full range though you will have to go higher and take a look at Mesa/Soldano etc. They offer the best range of sounds and insane amounts of gain.

I had a quick look at combos and this Peavey may be of interest. Peavey have a lot of versatility in their amps. http://www.music123.com/Peavey-Classic-R--50-212-i68573.music It's also in your price range, try it out if you find it at a store.

Keep looking around E-Bay and see what comes up. A JCM combo seems like your best option at this point though it will come slightly above your price range.

i'm pretty sure they don't make new ones anymore, but if you can find a marshall jcm600 somewhere, they're fantastic

Sovtek MIG 60. You can get it for under 400. Ed Reyes of Taking Back Sunday always uses this for recording, I use it as well.

Electrosonic (http://www.electrosonicamplifiers.com) makes probably the best amps I have ever heard. They are al completely handmade to your specifications and at a very god price. (not to mention they look incredible)

I work for the band The Silent Press (http://www.myspace.com/thesilentpress). They have some Eloctrosinic gear, and it's all amazing.
