This poll was inspired by an argument with a fellow AP member about modern metal compared to classic metal. I was just curious to see the majority's favorite decade. I'm personally going 70s followed closely by 80s.

I said the 80's because my favorite albums by Slayer, Metallica and Iron Maiden were done then.

Yeah it was a tough choice for me because I love all three of those bands too haha. But I had to say 70s for Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Other than those two bands, Maiden is my 3rd favorite metal band followed closely by Metallica and Megadeth

80's by a mile. I don't really consider Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath metal, though. They just aren't as hardas Metallica or Slayer were in the eighties.

90's metal: eh. Some modern metal rules, but come on... Glam/Hair Metal is the shit. Read Fargo Rock City and then disagree with me, thanks.

You can't say they aren't metal though. You have to remember that they were so fucking hard for their time man, haha. In the late 60s and early 70s, nobody could have ever dreamed of music being that hard. Also, if you watch any top metal band shows, Zeppelin and Sabbath are always 1 and 2 lol

sepultura is one of the only metal bands i like. since the OP decided to include zep and sabbath though, i went with 70s. can't forget dio too

what metal has come out in the 00's that would make it so lopsided in that era's favor?

none really has. i think theres just a lot more diversity in todays metal. i had to pick 00's just because of all the new sounds that have come in the past 10 years or so. after that i would say 70's though. i love sabbath and zeppelin

slipknot (besides S/T), tool, SOAD, killswitch, avenged, atreyu, bullet 4MV, cradle of filth, HIM,
not that thats all better metal that Sabbath etc. by a long shot, but prob most ppl like it better our age

Tool during the 90's was waaaaay better than Tool during the 00's, though. I still think Aenima is the best album of the 90's.
on another note:
a big problem with the late 90's/early 00's was the rap-metal travesty, so both decades have that stain on their credibility. To be perfectly honest though, the only pure metal band whose music i still like these days is Trivium whereas in the 90's, i could listen to dozens of good bands putting out metal (the black album, pantera, white zombie, type o negative, marilyn manson, vision of disorder, etc.). and then you get into bands like alice in chains or tool where they blur the lines of the genre, but on some level can still be considered metal.
as for Led Zeppelin, they're better than any other band mentioned in this entire poll/thread but i classify them simply as Rock 'n Roll. for that reason, i went with what i listened to and liked the most, 90's heavy metal.

I agree with everything in this entire statement except for the Zeppelin bit. I understand that you could consider them Rock 'n Roll, but you have to understand that they were one of the very first founders of metal. They've covered MANY different genres of music, but they were so hard pounding back in the day that nobody could have ever imagined music being that loud and heavy. It's just that metal music has changed in definition over time.

00's, because of bands like Converge and Animosity. I know they're not straight up metal, but they have influence. Well, actually I think Converge is 90's, but I like their 00's music a little bit more.

Necrophagist, strapping young lad, dragonforce, arsis, behemoth, lots and lots of good stuff has come out in the 00's, though the late 90's had some great stuff too. As far as 'real' meatal goes, the 00's top any of the other decades for sure.

have you actually listened to the whole albums or just a song or two. all their albums have a signature tool feel, but they all have things that set them apart.

Metallica were great. Slayer and Anthrax put out their best work. Hell even Megadeth managed a halfway decent song or two. Yes it has to be the '80s, any other answer is just wrong.
