Jackie Chan to star in 'The Karate Kid' remake
Jan 13, 2009, 07:37 PM | by Nicole Sperling

Jaden Smith has found himself a mentor. Jackie Chan will take on Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi role in Sony Pictures' remake of The Karate Kid. The movie stars 10-year old Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness), who is the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, and will be directed by Harold Zwart (The Pink Panther 2). Will's production company, Overbrook, will produce, and Jada has been rumored for the role of Jaden's mother in the film. China Film Corp. Group will coproduce the movie, which will shoot entirely in China.

Granted, this is a bad idea from the start, but it appears with their casting and director choices that this is going to be entirely geared towards young kids.

oh man, i just thought of something..

remember the scene when Daniel is in fighting in the tournament, and the kick ass song "You're The Best" by Joe Esposito is playing??

for this stupid new remake, i can definately see that song getting replaced by some lame rap track from Will Smith...or worse yet, a cover!

i'm telling you, this whole remake is a horrendous idea

Poltergeist (Remake) (likely in 2010) This will be a remake of the original film, directed by Vadim Perelman and written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. There was at one time a treatment that was written by Michael Grais called "Poltergeist: In the Shadows." This was to have been a fourth "Poltergeist" film not involving the Freeling family. However, MGM ultimately decided not to go with this project and decided to produce the remake instead.

"sweep the leg" will be sent via SMS thanks to Verizon funding and at least one character will remark how reliable the service is and at such affordable rates. Eddie Murphy will exclaim "OH SNAP" at least 17 times.

no kidding, Poltergeist is my fav horror film of alltime(alongside the evil dead trilogy), I mean i've never seen the sequels, dont want to see them, and I certainly wont see this garbage, anything titled Poltergeist that doesnt have the name Speilberg attached to it isnt worth watching.

And man, I wish I could be Mike Shinoda where I write a simple violin loop and get it played in every sports-themed trailer and NBA game ever. Seems to be the go-to song.

Just saw the trailer cause of Yahoo. Hated it. It looks too stereotypical and can easily see it becoming the next Transformers (a high grossing movie that completely sucks.)

While I tend to be skeptical of remakes, some films need them. Clash of the Titans and The Neverending Story, as great as they are, can really benefit from modern effects and technology.

That said: leave The Karate Kid alone. There's nothing that really needs updating here.

The original Star Wars trilogy had shitty special effects, but they shouldn't remake those.

The original trilogy's effects hold up far better than Neverending's. The dragon efffects especially don't hold up.

The way people put The Karate Kid 1984 in such high esteem is kind of embarrassing. I recently rewatched both The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid II, and they have not aged well. The film is not especially good (the acting, stunts, characterization) or anything, its a 'cute' film at best. I think people should refrain from looking at things from a nostalgia standpoint.

I prefer the remake by far, although there's a few things I would change (less focus on the love interest, more focus on the bullies). I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was, end up seeing the movie twice. Highly recommend it, fan of the original or not.

This looks so bad it's good. I've seen the trailer three times and was in tears each time. Totally seeing this shit super high.

That shit killed me. Wouldn't that be considered child abuse?

No, but Mr. Miyagi kicking Johnny and his friends in the balls should.

A group of pre-teens charging who have no problem with the idea at charging toward older gentleman with deadly kung fu moves was more concerning. Anyway, I like the way the scene was choreographed (its Jackie Chan, so of course its great). He never once striked one of them, only used their own moves against one another.

Anyone who prefers the remake must be 10 years old. The original Karate Kid is a classic cult movie, with great characterization and screenplay that keeps the viewer entertained. I can't say the same about this new crappy kids movie, which will be forgotten in a couple of months. Plus, at least the original version got its title right.

Started watching the original last night for the first time. Unless it takes a huge turn for the worse, I don't see how the kid above can say it hasn't aged well.
