See this post, bottom of page, for why he posts rumors, its actually pretty simple logic. Just as in the Glasseater thread, it can help dispell rumors instead of letting them go crazy.

If I hadn't posted this a rumor, people would've eventually heard it and assumed it to be true. Therefore, posting it as a rumor, and only as a rumor, people are aware there is no actual confirmation on whether it's true or not. I'm only trying to stop things from getting out of control. One of the best live bands I've ever seen......I saw them open for Weezer and No Doubt (The live in the tragic kingdom show) and they almost stole the show (no doubt was perfect that night)
