My boss and I have had this discussion two years in a row now, and I'm curious what you guys think. When do you stop wishing people a happy new year?

well as a man that works in retail, and constantly ends conversations with "take care, happy holidays" or "thank you, happy new years"....i say a day or two after new years to be honest. Like, you have some lull period...and some time to do truly say, "hey buddy....welcome to the new year"..but the expression is really meant to say, enjoy your new years eve and the new year to come. So saying it while the year is happening is over kill.

I never really say it. I've never really understood what exactly is "happy" about a new year. :-|

I guess I'd say Happy New Year to someone I hadn't seen since before the new year maybe. But usually it's about a week after.

It's to wish people that they have a happy coming year. Like a "good luck" for the next 365 days.

People consider it a fresh start. Which to most people is a good thing.

Yeah, I use to work in retail too, I never recall saying it past about a week after. My boss now has clients so he sees it as something he should be saying to anyone he hasn't talked to since before the new year. We're still undecided.

If you need to still carry-over the last common holiday as a default greeting, then you may require conversation skills.

Haha, that's such a generic bullshit statement, but I kind of liked it.
It's about a week for me. I tend to talk to or see people I haven't seen within that first week of the new year. If I see them past the 7th or so then they lost their chance.

Depends. I keep on wishing people a happy New Year if it's the first time I see them.

I usually don't say it at all. But I notice most people say it for a week and then stop.
You shouldn't say it past January 3rd.

i stop saying it after 3 days or so into the new year.

Haha who in their right mind would say "Happy New Year" to somebody past January? Imagine being approached in public by a stranger in July and being told "Happy New Year" and having confetti thrown in your face. That would suck!

Not after New Years because you may see someone you haven't seen since the previous year and still tell them Happy New Year. After January it does not have the same effect.
