With a -40 windchill having 20mph winds, frostbite could start in 10 minutes to exposed fingers, ears, etc.

Being outside for more than 5 minutes, not next to a building or anything to block the wind, is brutally painful, torturous, and probably the most uncomfortable feeling in the world besides maybe shitting your pants.
