View Full Version : Lance Armstrong, Wie/Danica, TO/Ricky and the sad shape of sports right now

Can I get a big "SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT THESE PEOPLE"? I can't stand it anymore. Mid-summer is by far the worst time of the year for sports. There's no football, no hockey, no basketball even, and the Pirates are always 25 games out of first place by now. It's terrible, and it's compounded by constant stories on these worthless topics.

1. Lance Armstrong/cycling - "Greatest athlete ever"? Give me a break, he's riding a fucking bike. Sure he has amazing endurance and is in great shape, even after cancer, but it's still a big bike race. Can anyone even name another cyclist? Doubt it. If Lance Armstrong was not an American and lived a cancer free live, I guarantee you this would get about 3 minutes of total air time each summer. Is he really that good, or do the rest of these guys in this "sport" just suck? Is he blood doping like most people involved in these types of events? Possibly. All I know is I see a guy that wins one race every year, and from what I gather, the Tour De France is not the only race. So basically, he's won nothing but the same race every year. Would it really be that great if Tiger Woods only won the Masters every year, and nothing else? Or if some redneck won the Daytona 500 every year, and nothing else? No, and this looks to be the same thing here. I'm glad this guy's retiring, and I never have to hear about cycling again (until the next cancer recovering American cyclist comes along).

2. Wie/Patrick - These bitches don't win anything, yet I have to hear about every 9th or 12th place finish they come up with. Quit dragging out your 15 minutes already.

3. TO - Is it necessary to report and analyze every single sentence TO or anyone involved in this says? In the end, his ass will be back on the field, and all this terrible off-season drama will be forgotten.

4. Ricky - I like how ESPN has to report on this every day, yet say the exact same things. Yes, Sean "I actually threw 2 TDs in a pre-season game!" Salisbury, we know his playing weight is much lower than 2 years ago. Yes we know his teammates shouldn't respect him after quitting. Yes we know he has a 4 game suspension to serve, and no trade value yet. But no, we don't want to hear you repeat the obvious twice a hour.

And Alex Smith just got a 5 year, $50 million deal, with $24 million in bonus. In immediately breaking news in respone to that, Ryan Leaf, Cade McNown, and Tim Couch have just booked a spot for Smith in 3 years to join the mighty first round bust QB club.

I feel ya on this. Add Brown to the list. I dont care to see his mug everyday on tv. Yes he is probably going to the knicks, yes they will still suck, yes the city of NY still sucks.

Armstrong is a nice story. I hate it though when people ask the "If tiger won the masters 7 years straight..." stuff. That is the biggest race in cycling, like the world series is to baseball and superbowl to football. He had a great career and im glad an American dominated the French tour.

Wie and Danica....win something before I see your mug.

T.O....sit down

Ricky....sit down with TO. I cant wait till this season starts and I stop hearing about you (although that probably wont happen).

The only good thing about this time of year is the MLB Trade deadline and the race for the pennants.

Agreed he's not the greatest, but between the Tour de France and the Ironman, the most athletic people tend to emerge. Most athletic currently, Michael Vick, but I'd put Lance within the top 10 because it is both a mentally and phsically insane to complete that race 7 years straight. A few thousand miles at 55 kph, thats impressive.

2. Wie/Patrick - These bitches don't win anything, yet I have to hear about every 9th or 12th place finish they come up with. Quit dragging out your 15 minutes already.

Agreed on Wie, she's not even top two in WOMENS golf. Paula Cramer (sp?) is 2nd on the money list and overall a better player, hands down. Maybe in 5-10 years, but she has to win something first. And Danica does not deserve her own signature line, you have to at least win sometime

4. Ricky

Should be serving a jail sentence like all the other drug users who have been found out. Must be nice to have a talent and use it to not only get off from legal troubles, but cheat the system to get 12+ games removed from your suspension. I hope he fails miserably, it's coming to him. It was only after he was found positive that he "couldn't take the abuse anymore".

He's too smart to do a Ryan Leaf thing, but I'm not sure he has a great situation in SF.

Yeah, I agree...but not totally....i mean, it is a sports news channels job to report these stories, and expand on them as more news comes in...but yeah, i agree SOMETIMES it can get over the top...

That being said...Alex Smith wont end up with Tim Couch...TO needs to come back to SF...and if Ricky wants to be traded he could be used as a back up for the niners

I was going to add Larry Brown, but the level of disgust was already too high. He's another one though.

I think we may have a winner for one of the most ignorant posts of all time. I doubt I'm the only one who would much rather hear about Lance Armstrong winning his 7th Tour De France in a row than the fucking Pirates, or pretty much any other baseball team, for that matter.

When did I ever say they should talk about the Pirates? I'm talking about my options for watching sports right now, and they're pretty much it, and they suck.

Armstrong is a nice story. I hate it though when people ask the "If tiger won the masters 7 years straight..." stuff. That is the biggest race in cycling, like the world series is to baseball and superbowl to football. He had a great career and im glad an American dominated the French tour.

But you know if he wasn't an American, this country wouldn't care anymore about the Tour De France than they do soccer. It'd be less actually. There are other races, and you never hear about him winning them. In fact someone was telling me how the only reason he'd compete in another race is to get into shape for the TDF. That's all he cared about. Someone like Tiger Woods wants to win every single competition he's in.

on the armstrong issue, i kind of think of it this way "I wouldn't talk about a guy's abilities unless i could do what they do myself"

I never buy that argument. It's no different when someone says a band sucks, and people fire back with, "can you do any better?". That's not the point, we're all critics, not athletes.

Alex Smith is getting more money than Eli, and it's just a shame. The teams that get "rewarded" with the high draft pick are actually getting fucked over the most. The higher the pick, the more ridiculous amount of money you have to give out to an unproven player. Unless they fix the CBA, these contracts are going to keep getting bigger, and teams are going to have their cap situation destroyed by a player that hasn't even take a snap of NFL football in his life.

michelle wie is a cancer to golf. i think what's she's doing, being 15 and playing well is great...but for her to go after PGA mens tournaments, just to be the first woman to make the cut is ridiculous when she can't even win the LPGA events. There's a reason there is sepration between the two (call it sexist if you must), and the only reason a woman should even be permitted to play in men's events is if they're dominating the women's, so Anika, jump in. But what Wie is doing is trying to put her name in the history books in a backdoor way and i think it's bullshit, and I hope the masters never lets her in.

I watched the Tour everyday this summer, and i found it very very interesting. Its not just "hey lets see who can sprint to the finish first" its all about tactics. Thats why Armstrong is so damn good, hes smart and he has an amazing team. I dont understand how people dont think he could be considered a athlete. He rode a bike up the fucking Alps, I wouldnt want to do that. Plus its one of the few sports were you are training ALL YEAR long. Lance rests for like 2 months after the tour, then trains the next ten months. Thats why he's quitting if he could just show up and win, then i would think diffrently. But this guy pounds so mant hours into ridding a bike that its sick, Lance Armstrong could be one of the best Athletes ever.

I prefer sports that are relevant. You know damn well if he was some German or Italian, then he would get about as much air time each year for winning this as Kobayashi gets for winning the hot dog eating competition. You wouldn't give a rat's ass about cycling (as if you really do now). But no, because he's an American, the media can sucker people like you into thinking he's the greatest athlete ever. Is his achievement amazing? Yes. But as for being the best athlete ever, that's a complete joke. Teams just don't show up to win the Super Bowl or World Series, they're winning games before it to get there. Winning the same race doesn't even make you the best cyclist ever (I've seen plenty of people argue he's not), let alone the best athlete ever.

I don't consider physical endurance the lone trait in athleticism. Michael Vick has a stupid high vertical leap, 4.3 speed, the muscular build of a linebacker, etc. He is an all around athlete

Put Lance anywhere but on a bike, and Vick makes him look silly.

Don't get me wrong, I think Lance is fucking nasty, especially since they took away some of the longer uphill sections that he normally owns for this years tour and he still won, but in sheer athletic ability, its not even that close.

I can't think off the top of my head anyone better then Vick, but their may be.

since when does relevance determine greatness. and i know that you didn't just compare hotdog eating to the Tour De France. and your right, if lance wasn't american he wouldn't get as much coverage. your argument doesn't make any sense. that doesn't make his acheivement any less incredible. teams that play baseball all year could never cycle for 3000 miles in under three weeks. the man has training, endurance, strength and ability in his size that's unparalleled. and like i said earlier im really interested in what you define as greatness(or who for that matter). if it's anything about relevance, ill tell you right now that there's not much more to throwing a foot ball around for 45 minutes a week in front of camera crews and filled stadiums. it has nothing to do with popularity or sponsors.

I didn't compare the ability of a hot dog eating contest to the TDF, but I definitely will compare the popularity of them in America to be equal if it wasn't for Lance Armstrong being an American. You're right, him being an American doesn't decrease his achievement, but it did increase it, which was my whole point.

I'd rather look at greatness in other sports, where you have to compete with not only the opponent, but you have to make sure your teammates are up to the level of competition. Like I said in the other thread, there's a very good argument for Bill Russell. He made his teammates better, and he changed the sport of basketball. He dominated for years, winning titles in the NCAA and NBA. A guy many would call the greatest ever (Chamberlain) could never win a title, because of the dominance of Russell's teams.

Vick wouldn't even finish the Tour de France.

Right, just like how Lance wouldn't finish a 60 minute NFL game at QB. One sack by a 300lb DT on that little body and it's over. What's your point?

im not so sure. even with Lance at the top of his game, we still don't get half the coverage i think it deserves. there's a lot more about this competition than i think a lot of people see. there's also the universal quality of endurance. some athletes have it. some don't. Lance has no substitutes, and certainly no team to really improve or to be dependent on, but the last few posts are very correct. it's hard to find a universal attribute that defines greatness.

Golfers play in tournaments to gear up for the majors as well. When it comes to golf one big stat is how many majors they have won. Also, is golf took as much endurance as cycling you wouldn't see big stars playing in every event.

The reason she was in contention for playing in The Masters was because she was going out and beating men. Whoever wins the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship is given an invite to The Masters. She made it to the quarterfinals. She was getting in the same way that men do. How is that a "backdoor" way?

I understand how she almost made it in. My first point stands, that the only reason a woman should be playing with men is because they have sufficiently dominated the women's tour. She has not, she should be more concerned with dominating her field before she goes looking for more of a challenge.

Further, it's a backdoor because even if she made it in through the amateur championship, all it proves is that she's better than amateur men. Impressive yes, but she'd use that provision to make her the first woman to ever play. I think she's going so far ahead of herself trying to make that history that she's defouling what it really would be. If a woman is to play, ever, in the Masters, shouldn't it be someone who has earned respect by winning on their own tour time and again, has outgrown the women's game and is ready to show the men how good she is? Or should it be a girl who hasn't even earned her stripes yet, beats a few guys who won't touch the cut, and sees the easiest route into the history books?

But that also stands for the men. Very few of the men in the Amateur tournament of the men playing have even been competitive the men's tour, so why should they be allowed to play? It's more of a problem with the system than her. Someone does this EVERY YEAR. You're up in arms about it now because it's a woman. Women play in the amateur tournament all the time. She's the first one that actually has a legitamite shot to win it.

It's more of a problem with the system than her. Someone does this EVERY YEAR. You're up in arms about it now because it's a woman. Women play in the amateur tournament all the time. She's the first one that actually has a legitamite shot to win it.
i have a problem with a) the fact she plays in it BECAUSE of what it does, her sole motivation being she wants so badly to be that first one and b) the fact that it's actually going to be historic when she does win it eventually, and when she flops in the masters, it will be a mockery. why is it historic when a great woman beats an average man? Right now Wie plays in as many men's tournaments as women's and it's wrong on bunch of levels. I really hope it stunts her career and people learn from Anika and Nancy Lopez who were fine with just being great, rather than making history and not winning.

Why shouldn't she want to be the first one? Why wouldn't any female golfer want to be the first one? And before you declare that she will "flop" in The Masters, let's remember that she's 15 and is already somewhat competitive with men. What happens when she's 25?
