They're not my favorite band or anything, but I like them. Made good music and gave Mr. Grohl his big break. So they are appreciated in my book.

I've always found their music to be overrated (although I definitely don't think they suck), but I will always value their place in musical history for making something other than hair bands popular.

while i believe they are overrated to a certain extent, to say that they suck is shortsighted and borderline dumb. if you dont like them that is cool, but nirvana's influence runs deep, and they have a lot of really solid tunes. without them, music is a very different landscape today, and we would not have the foo fighters most likely. so i strongly disagree with that statement. PS. your opinion is not true.

Well, I have to agree with you about them being influential. I mean, a lot of bands are,for some reason, influenced by them. But honestly the music is nothing special. I don't care if people like them but there is just so much better music out there.

I've always liked Grohl & FF, and I think Kurt had some good taste as far as the music he liked, and i thought his approach of trying to mesh beatles-type pop with hardcore and metal and all seemed like a neat idea, but honestly I've never liked Nirvana, I've always thought they sounded annoying, I think because of Cobains death they were given way to much praise, sure I mean if they inspired some good bands, then yeah some credit is due, but I've never pretended to be a fan really, I liked a couple of their covers from that Incesticide album and thats probably it.

i totally agree there is better stuff out there. i just think that without nirvana, music would not be as good today. if you wanna hear nirvana at their best listen to bleach. that is a spectacular album.

anyone who claims that "nirvana sucks" has to be under the age of 24...if you were old enough in 91-93 to realize what that band did for rock music, you would have very different opinions...as for the bands music itself, everyone has different tastes and opinions - but being a 18 year old kid and saying "nirvana sucks" today is like being...well, an 18 year old kid and saying "the beatles suck"

Kurt Cobain died for your sins, and this is how you repay him?
seriously though. if it weren't for nirvana, bands like Ratt and Poison would still rule the airwaves. even if you think popular music sucks (which i tend to agree with), i can't see how someone could say nirvana DIDN'T have the biggest impact on music in the last 20 years. i will defend nirvana until the day i die. anyone who doubts them should listen to the Unplugged show, or get the With the Lights Out collection. if you still dislike them... i give up on you leaving this world with your soul intact, but will respect your opinion.

I guess it depends in different ways. The Foo Fighters are more mainstream and have produced a lot of hit records. Everlong is an amazing song along with a bunch of other Foo Fighter songs. I also heard that they are amazing live. Kurt was a heroine addict and he was a very skeevy dude. According to his biography book he was going to fuck a retarded girl but her pussy smelled too bad....seriously wtf.....He was a great musician, unfortunately he was too sedated most of the time to ever really look around and soak it in. Also I think they got so popular also because he was a symbol of a generation and eventually killed himself. That is a way of an idol in our society somehow i.e. Elvis, Marilyn Monroe. Nirvana made some very good music but to say who is better is just a matter of taste according to me.

Thanks for giving up on me.I never could get into them because of their genre. I fucking hate anything grunge related. Its the same thing when I try to get people to listen to grind, death metal, and 90s rap I like. Some people just don't like certain genres and I fucking can't stand shitty radio rock Nirvana included. I would rather listen to some Rise Records garbage, which I can't stand, over Nirvana

the thing with nirvana is that they weren't trying to make "radio rock", or pop music in anyway. thats why kurt cobain ultimately offed himself. they took his art and made it something it wasn't. like he never had a choice. he fucking hated that, you can read about it in his diary he published. if they went onto a late night talkshow to perform (i.e letterman, leno, etc.), he'd introduce themselves as "corporate rock sell-out whores" in that really sarcastic, messed up kurt cobain way. eventually he refused to play songs like 'smells like teen spirit' or 'lithium' i mean, you're a big MM fan. can you imagine if the powers at be just took a song like 'life like weeds', or 'styrofoam boots/ it's all nice on ice, alright', and made it the staple for the pop genre? i can't imagine it, because to this point, pop music hasn't sounded like those songs. and at the time Nirvana came out, pop music didn't sound like Teen Spirit, or Drain You. it sounded like pour some sugar on me, or sweet child of mine, or every rose has it's thorns.
also, for those other 90's bands that you mentioned, nirvana opened the door for those kinda bands. PJ, soundgarden etc. would've never gotten a second look if nirvana hadn't gotten so big.
it's one thing not to like nirvana, i can see where someone wouldn't. but i think there is a certain amount of backlash against them, the same way there is for a lot of bands, just because they got big. i always will maintain that there are some bands that deserve to be popular, nirvana being one of them. for my money, kurt cobain is the most legit "artist" in music in the last twenty years.

LOL sweet Child of Mine. I fucking love Guns n Roses. I remember getting into this exact argument in the Favorite Decade of Music poll that I had made. I sort of changed my opinion lately, as in this week, on Nirvana. I used to think all they bands they influenced were radio rock garbage but I found out they influenced a lot of good music such as Brand New and Manchester Orchestra. I now kind of realize how influential and important they are but I still think they are a tad overrated.
As for the Modest Mouse thing Float on got huge to the point where most people know them just for that song. I fucking hate when I'm talking to people about my favorite band and all they know is Float On. I kind of hoped Ocean Breathes Salty or a We Were Dead single caught on so people knew them for more than just Float On. They are in no way a one hit wonder band and should never be thought of like that. I really wish they were fucking huge, even Nickelback huge, because of how amazing and talented they are. They have always had some great pop songs since their first album. They might be a little weird but if marketed right they could be huge.

i can agree that nirvana has a huge boost with cobain's suicide, so much so that he overshadows the band. what really sums up nirvana for me was the Unplugged show. but if someone doesn't like them i typically let it go lol. i just want people to know that theirs more to them than whats on the radio.
as for float on, your frustration sounds similar to my plight with Teen Spirit lol personally, i like modest mouse and nirvana about equally, i just think nirvana did more and had a huge impact

anyways, nirvana was almost as important to music history as the beatles. they ushered in a brand new era of popular music, and therefore do not suck. you wont find me listening to nirvana often in my free time, but i understand and appreciate their significance. that said, they do have some really really great songs.
