quick photoshop question

i copy and pasted a section from one photo into another and i want to kinda smooth the edges so it looks like it is part of the original picture. when i try to use the clone stamp it doesnt work on the new part of the picture. i think it has something to with the layers because when i pasted it created a new layer just for that part. is there a way i can merge them into one layer and then use clone stamp or is there something else i can do? haha im new at photoshop and im trying best lol.

it's like shift+command+e on a mac. or in the "layers" drop down menu. i think it's accessible by right clicking on the box that displays the layers in it.

Speaking of Photoshop... Are any of you Photoshop wizards? I saw Rainn Wilson's Twitter picture was like a character from Avatar, and I was wondering if any of you could do something like that?

i use photoshop elements , still have a lot to learn
