Metallica once were great. Pretty much past 92 they started to suck. They still play a good live show, though that's due to the fact they play pretty much everything pre 91.
They're talented musicians but if their next album is anywhere close to St Anger I think it is time the group left the scene.

I was never a huge fan, but I saw them live at Reading festival once, and damn if they don't put on a good show.
But then, I'm a total sucker for pyrotechnics.

hmmm... im conflicted. there's no denying that Lars is one of the greatest drummers to play, and kirk absolutely shreds. it's unbelievable what i've heard that man play. but if there was ever any other voice that annoyed me as much as Hetfield's...i always respected their music, but could never enjoy it. i thought S&M was a bit of genious, but then again, most of that was on account of michael kamen's brilliant orchestrations...rest in peace...

Kirk Hammet is very, very overrated. He is just a huge wanker. James Hetfield has alot more skills than he does.

Personally I really like Metallica. I will agree that their new stuff sucks but old Metallica is great. They are just great musicians. They are all masters of their instruments. Both Kirk and James are great guitarists, but they have different styles. James is a riff-master and Kirk just shreds hard.

im not particularly fond of metallica, myself...master of puppets is pretty torturous, for me, because freshman year in my geometry class this psycho metal kid would listen to it, sing it, and play what seemed to be three sets of air drums simultaneously (because the range of his arm flailing was an incredible radius) every day for the entire semester. i was the lucky one sitting behind him, i caught a few of the air drum sticks he threw to the air crowd.
i will concede that they are INCREDIBLY talented and are brilliant musicians

He is an exception. He actually has a reason to wear girl pants. Aside from their music, they are neat people, except for their drummer, Lars.
Metallica sure don't fit into this thread. People can actually say that they don't like them....but they are not the worst band ever. I think they are the best....they've made songs that will remain into my playlists / cds forever. Thou their new album isn't that good ..but it still rocks ... some years ago i didn't like them at all ...but now ....when I get older ..the more I value their music. One of the greatest band ever I'd say.

Agreed. James Hetfield's singing voice sounds like he is choking on ugly. And it allows people like that dude from Nickelback and Hinder, and most importantly Scott Stapp, think they can sing.

Remember Some Kind Of Monster? Why are these guys even allowed to make music anymore. The riffs they were writing on that documentary were the weakest riffs I've ever heard. It sounded like you're little brother in his room with his Peavey guitar, Gorilla 10 watt amp, and his Boss distortion pedal.

Honestly, I've always thought Master of Puppets was a bit overrated. Ride, Justice and the black album are all stronger releases. There are only 8 songs, one is instrumental, one is the wasted space that is "Leper Messiah" and "The Thing That Should Not Be" is rather cheesy. It's a good record, but it shouldn't be held up as their masterpiece like some people are prone to do.

I love Lizzy, but I've never liked their version. Always thought Metallica bettered them there.
Oddly enough I listened to the black album earlier today. One thing I've always disliked about this band would be the unnecessary length of their songs. 7 minutes of repeating the same two verses and riffs is tiring. If they shortened their shit to the 2:30-3:30 mark they'd still be killing.

Oh no you di'n't! I obviously choose the Lizzy side of things at all times, but I will say that I have a lot of respect for Metallica doing this cover seeing as Lynott was one of Hetfield's biggest influences.

Here's a quote from Ted Jensen who mastered Death Magnetic.
I’m certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice it to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me I’m not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else.
Seems like it was already shit due to Rubin's mixing skills.

I really respect your musical opinion on this site and obviously in general, but it's interesting to see you love S&M. The reason why is because my brother's a composer/orchestrator, and according to him the entire thing is pure shit (on the orchestral side of things). I think it had a lot to do with the arrangements, as I remember him saying that Metallica needed killer fucking arrangements for those songs, and they didn't get one. I just thought it be interesting to see why you like it so much.

I have very little use for the technical end of orchestral composing, and find myself at odds with people who have a background in that. Just as a disclaimer.
But to me, it's their greatest hits, with Hetfield in the best voice of his life, with the orchestra filling in as a fifth member, adding the color some of the songs ("Of Wolf and Man", "The Thing That Should Not Be") always desperately needed. Plus Newstead never sounded better on backing vocals. And add in the fact that I grew up on it. It was one of the first albums I ever obsessively listened to over and over and knew every note of.

Well, as I said before I respect your opinion on the music you talk about on here, you'd actually get along really well with him when it comes to the classics, he loves funk, and old rock and roll (Springsteen, Stones, The Who). It just peaked my interest when I saw your love for S&M, and his wild difference of opinion. I like S&M too, so we've definitely had arguments about it being a solid release, but like you said having no use for the technical side of the subject matter, I ran into problems fighting him about his own expertise, haha.

For him. I'm proud of my brother and what he's done. I could go on and on about him honestly. He's a great guy and has done some awesome stuff with his musical career. If you're just busting my balls, that's cool, but if you're being a dick, that's cool too man. Everyone's gotta be a dick sometimes.

Haha yeah. It's hard to argue with someone who's "speaking a different language" for lack of a better term.

I do. Unfortunately your posts (pictures anyway) don't show up for me in the jokes thread when I'm at work. I usually check them out later when I get home. Always quality.

SO true. I remember when he tried to explain what a bus was during recording. My head almost exploded.

Haha. In my non-Hailey band, our old drummer was a theory major and I'm a "know it when you hear it" guy. Discussions of what to do on a song needed a translator.

I've lost all appeal when they released St. Anger...Their old material is classic, don't get me wrong. I just don't listen to them as much as I did.

I haven't listened to Metallica in ages, but I was a huuuuge fan of everything Lightning through Black Album in high school, and select tracks from Load/Reload because of S&M, which is what got me into them in the first place.
My university's hockey team used to start the third period to the intro of "-Human", which was pretty sweet.
