Inspired by the Dawson's Creek thread. Any fans of this show when it was on? I fucking loved it.

OH MY GOD! One of the greatest shows ever! What did you think of the last season when Dawn came in? I don't know if I liked her all too much, but the whole key idea was pretty kool.
Haha. As you can see...I was quite the WB show fan.

I thought it was weird when she just appeared like that, but the way they managed to fit her in so well was really cool. At first I hated the idea because I thought they were going to take it down the 'slayer junior' route, but they didn't so yay!

The last ever episode you mean? I thought the stuff with Spike was amazing, but the stuff about every girl being a slayer was a little heavy-handed on the female empowerment front, and also a little corny! haha

Oh my gosh, and it was all because of love. I'm so soppy when it comes to that stuff. I didn't like the fact that they split Xander and Anya up though, they were hilarious!
I'm so glad I made this thread, because there are so many funny quotes in it too! haha I'm so sad.

Anya: You don't find me attractive any more.
Xander: What are you talking about? I think you're gorgeous.
Anya: Oh, really? Well then, why didn't we have sex last night?
Xander: Is that what this is about? We've gone other nights without sex.
Anya: I know. Twice! I can't believe we're breaking up.

I loved the bit with the projector when Buffy was making hand gestures about how she was going to kill them, and xander thought she was doing something else, his face was priceless!
Buffy: We have a marching jazz band?
Oz: Yeah, but, you know, since the best jazz is improvisational, we'd be going off in all directions, banging into floats... scary.
And of course: Faith: Thank God we're hot chicks with superpowers.
The whole female empowerment theme of this show is a bit much isn't it?

Yeah, but I could get over it because it was such a good show. That quote is great, I loved Oz's sense of humour. I just watched an episode that had this line in:
Anya: I have finesse, I have finesse coming out of my bottom!

Here's another one I like:
Willow: "He's shot! Are you okay?"
Oz: "I, um, I'm shot, you know. Wow! It's odd. And painful."
It got seriously naff towards the end. But the first, hmm, five or so seasons were brilliant. Oz was sorely missed. I didn't like Dawn or Willow's troll-like lesbian lover. It seemed to get more bogged down toward the end and a lot less witty. When they were in school and the first year of university it was solid gold though. I enjoyed Angel too, but that also went off the rails with that whole Conor thing.

I never got into Angel, probably because I never liked him when he was in Buffy. Obviously, I liked all the gay Willow stuff, I didn't really like the girlfriend but her coming out produced quite a few funny moments. Here's a question, who was your overall favourite character and don't give me all that 'they were all good' crap, you can only pick one!!! I think Anya was my favourite.
Oz.... hands down. I thought you'd like the gay stuff. I really didn't.

I loved when Spike was bad ass. They really wussed him down at the end.
Quotes:
Willow: "Why else would she be acting like such a B-I-T-C-H?"
Giles: "Willow, I think we're a little too old to be spelling things out."
Xander: "A bitca?"
Giles: "Apparently not."
Giles: You might have let me in on your plan while he throttled me.
Spike: Oh, poor Watcher. Did your life pass before your eyes? Cup of tea, cup of tea, almost got shagged, cup of tea?
Spike: "You won. All right? You came in, and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. It's what Caesar did, and he's not going around saying, 'I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it.'"
Ah, That was fun.

Ah, That was fun.ahahahahahaha! I laughed for a solid ten minutes at the one where Spike says: 'almost got shagged' they were really funny together.
I found a ton of quotes, I could go on for days here:
Giles: So, uh, trouble with, uh, studies?
Buffy: This is a bad time.
Giles: You keep saying that.
Buffy: Well it looks pretty bad! I think someone had just a little too much free time on their hands.
Giles: I'm not supposed to have a private life?
Buffy: No! 'Cause you're very, very old, and it's gross.
Xander: You up for a little reconnaissance?
Buffy: You mean where we all sculpt and paint and stuff?
Xander: No, that was the renaissance.
Buffy: Oh. I've had a really long week.
Xander: The mayor is gonna kill us all during graduation.
Cordelia: Oh. Are you gonna go to fifth period?
Xander: I'm thinking I might skip it.
Cordelia: Yeah. Me too.
Anya: Oh, that's very humorous. Make fun of the ex-demon. I can just hear you in private: 'I dislike that Anya. She's newly human and strangely literal.' "
Ok I'll stop after this one, it's quite long but so funny..
Xander: Basically, I got as far as Oxnard and the engine fell out of my car, and that was literally. So, I ended up washing dishes at The Fabulous Ladies Night Club for about a month and a half while I tried to pay for the repairs. No one really bothered me or even spoke to me until one night when one of the male strippers called in sick and no power on this earth will make me tell you the rest of that story. Suffice to say I traded my car in for one that wasn't entirely made of rust, came trundling back home to the arms of my loving parents, where everything was exactly as it was except I sleep in the basement and I have to pay rent. How's college?
Buffy: Male strippers?
Xander: No power on this earth!
Buffy: Okay. College is good.
Xander: Okay, uh, once more with even less feeling.

07/15/10, 03:37 PM
Season 4 is alright until about the last third of it, my least favorite stuff Whedon has done. Which is unfortunate because a lot of the season had potential if they had done it right.
My list shifts pretty frequently but my top 5 at the moment would be (In no particular order)
Buffy:
The Gift
The Body
Who Are You?
Selfless
Innocence
Angel:
Lullaby
Dear Boy
Reprise
Not Fade Away
Spin the Bottle
I feel like I picked rather obvious choices for Buffy, with the exception of maybe Selfless and Who are You, but I just love Anya so much and her story is just so great. The transition from her flashback from OM,WF to being inpaled is one of my favorite Buffy moments. I'm also a big Faith fan and I love how they turned a typical gimmick episode into a great look at her character. Her "Because it's Wrong" line is awesome.
Spin the Bottle is one of the few times the humor in Angel doesn't fall flat for me ("I'm Head Boy!"..." I wonder how he got that title...")
Darla was actually one of my favorite characters in the buffyverse so episodes focusing on her really stick out to me, especially Lullaby. And Dear Boy was a great way to officially kick off her arc.
The Scene with Holland Manners in the elevator during "Reprise" makes the episode for me, Angel at rock bottom was handled beautifully. The writers truly made me believe that Angel had given up so much that he would rather be Angelus, and that is a dificult task to accomplish
I don't think I need to say much about Not Fade away, just shear brilliance.

Season 4 of Angel is the only one I have major gripes with.
I hated it. I hated Jasmine and Connor and the whole Connor-Cordelia thing. As if everybody was just supposed to forget about Angel and Buffy? He would never have gone for Cordelia.
I have to agree about Hush and Once More With Felling and Who Are You? as top episodes. Earshot, Halloween, The Wish, Fear Itself, Bad Girls, Phases, Pangs, Something Blue, Buffy Vs. Dracula, Conversations With Dead People and Storyteller are some of my other favourites. That list was a bit longer than I expected...

Correct
i think dollhouse is better than what i've seen so far of buffy, which would be the first five episodes, yes. is that so wrong? several people have already stated that the first season is the weakest of the series. and just because buffy came first doesn't mean it's the best. i vaguely remember a poll on here asking which whedon show was the best, and firefly had a clear lead. my comparing buffy to supernatural, glee, and firefly are only me mentioning shows i've already seen that share certain elements with the show. buffy reminds me of those shows because supernatural is about hunting monsters, glee takes place in a high school, and firefly has the same quality character and dialogue goodness we can expect of whedon. that's all i'm saying. i'm not saying they're better, or that they influenced the show in any way, that would be ridiculous. i know buffy came first, and i know i haven't gotten to the better parts of it yet. i have high hopes for buffy, and i already enjoy the hell out of it. shouldn't that be enough?

season 2 > season 1 > season 3
although season 3 did have some of the best episodes of the series so far, as an overall season it didn't compare. as much as i loved the character development in some of the protagonists in season 3, mostly with Willow (and hell, Eliza Dushku as Faith was a delight to watch), i think as far as the bad guys go, Angel as the main villain, with Spike and Drusilla at his side, was much more entertaining and engrossing to watch than the mayor and his stupid ascension.
i'll be watching the rest of Buffy and Angel in the order they aired, so pretty much alternating between Buffy and Angel episodes. Buffy season 4 premiere and Angel pilot already have a little bit of crossover, so i'm sure i made the right choice. i found the Angel pilot to be much more interesting, almost perfect even. anyone in here prefer the series Angel over Buffy?

although season 3 did have some of the best episodes of the series so far, as an overall season it didn't compare. as much as i loved the character development in some of the protagonists in season 3, mostly with Willow (and hell, Eliza Dushku as Faith was a delight to watch), i think as far as the bad guys go, Angel as the main villain, with Spike and Drusilla at his side, was much more entertaining and engrossing to watch than the mayor and his stupid ascension.
i'll be watching the rest of Buffy and Angel in the order they aired, so pretty much alternating between Buffy and Angel episodes. Buffy season 4 premiere and Angel pilot already have a little bit of crossover, so i'm sure i made the right choice. i found the Angel pilot to be much more interesting, almost perfect even. anyone in here prefer the series Angel over Buffy?
You prefer season 1 to season 3? Whaaaaat? Season 3 is so much better.
And I prefer Angel to Buffy, I think the storylines are stronger. There isn't much in it though, I love both shows.

i really dislike the main villain of season 3, a lot. almost everything else about season 3 is superior to season 1, of course. it's kind of like how i would rate the seasons of dexter, not exactly by best plot or character development, but by best villain. i don't know, i'm just weird.

I VASTLY prefer Angel, as much as I love Buffy. The tone is so much better, I love every member of the Angel Investigations team (they pretty much add one new cast member per year, which keeps the storylines fresh and give a natural build to the group), and seasons 2 and 5 are pretty much perfection (season 1 can be considered up there too).

Fair enough. I just think that the episodes in season 3 were a lot stronger than the episodes in season 1, with better development of the plot and characters. Oh, and I love Faith. She's one of my favourite characters in the entire Buffyverse. I find myself constantly going back and watching season 3 whereas I don't think I've ever revisited season 1.
You should post here to let us know if your enjoyment of the show is enchanced by watching Buffy/Angel side by side. I always wanted to do this but I've never gotten around to it.
Edit: The order I originally watched them in was really messed up. Something like this:
Angel season 1, Angel season 2, Buffy season 1, Angel season 3, Buffy season 2, Angel season 4, Angel season 5 and then the rest of Buffy.
The Buffy/Angel flip works really well during season 1, works a bit during season 2, but during season 3, after Buffy switched networks, there is no crossover. Season 4 of Angel and season 7 of Buffy do hook back up again with some major events crossing shows that deeply effect both storylines, so overall, I'd say it's a good way to watch.

There is a point in S6/ S3 where Angel clearly becomes the better show.In my opinion, from here on out Buffy kind of fluctuates in quality between absolutely amazing and plain boring, while Angel just keeps getting better and better, with one small snag in Season 4. Though Angel is lacking in some of the humor Buffy has, it knows how to handle it's characters far better.
Edit: Knows how to handle all of it's characters.....except one.

Would that one happen to be a teenager who drags down a lot of the show?

Haha yeah His cameos in season 5 were alright, I would have loved to see THAT version of Connor in a very different season 4, instead were stuck with the boring angsty psychopath who never really changes through out the course of the season, which is weird for Angel. Cordelia of course got off track for awhile but her cameo in season 5 brought her arc to a close really well, its weird watching that episode after an early episode of Buffy.

just finished Angel season 1 episode 9. fuck.
the going back and forth has been really rewarding so far. specifically, the whole angel in a buffy episode then buffy in an angel episode was done rather nicely. as for the storylines of the separate shows, buffy has been very whimsical, which is very hit or miss at times, but its serious moments, especially concerning willow, are some really great scenes. angel, on the other hand, has been much darker, and i like dark. so far, i'm starting to prefer angel over buffy. but i have to say, the other day i rewatched an episode of the second season of supernatural ("heart," if you must know and are familiar with the show) and cried like a baby. rewatched! not even the end of buffy season 2 evoked such a strong emotional reaction from me, and for me that's probably the saddest scene in the buffyverse so far. buffy and angel are great shows, don't get me wrong, but on an emotional level, neither have gotten close to becoming what supernatural is to me. now, i'm really hoping later episodes will change that.

This is exactly what I'm doing right now, man. On episode 15 of Season 4 of Buffy, and Season 1 of Angel.
Such a fun experience.

forgot to say, so far, the whole demon hunting plotline is just as interesting as buffy's relationship with riley--it isn't. goodie goodie spike is fun, but i'd rather rewatch season 2. angel's overarching storyline's had less exposure, but it looks to be more promising.
I think season 4 of Buffy is mostly weak, it's easily my least favourite season, along with season 1. At least it has Hush.

I think 4 is better than 1 or 7, but it's always been hard for me to rate the season lower because Hush is quite possibly the best Buffy episode ever.

That episode scares the fuck out of me every time.
I really liked the 4th season as soon as I got past my disdain for Riley.
Upon my 7th time running through the series I finally started liking him.

The scene with Giles' presentation on the projector is quite possibly my favorite scene of the scooby gang.

I really like 7, way more than 4 at least. All the stuff with Riley and Adam and The Initiative just annoyed me. Hush is one of the few redeeming factors of the season. Season 4 was the only time I ever had a hard time getting motivation to watch the show.

yes, one of my favorites. fifth season, in which they're trying to stop the biblical apocalypse, is incredible, certainly one of the best seasons of television i've ever seen. though, with that said, if you do decide to watch it, start from the beginning. the overarching plotline of the first five seasons is fantastic.

Yeah, I watched the first five seasons. It was written originally as a 5 season arc, so it all comes together really nicely. I've heard mixed things about season 6 so I'm kind of hesitant to start watching it.

Ugh! After watching the first five seasons and then going back here and there, I kind of hate Season 1. It's just got so much filler. I could rewatch the other four over and over again, but I have no desire to ever sit through the entirety of season 1 again.
I think 3 gets a lot of flack; while it is lacking in comparison, I think there is some really good stuff. Plus, it just seems more like season 2.5 than anything; it's really just there to tie up season 2 and set up the next two.

you should watch season 6. the later episodes more than make up for the shakiness of the early ones.

just watched Who Are You? easily one of my favorite episodes of season 4. not that it has much competition...
i love faith so much right now. not that i didn't love her before, but damn. ever since she joined up with the mayor, i was hoping she'd go good again (don't get me wrong, bad faith is fun to watch), and it happened, and i'm so glad they took her character in that direction. also, holy shit, sarah michelle gellar did a great job as faith being buffy, better than eliza dushku did buffy being faith.

since there's no separate thread for angel and i'm sure most of you in here have already seen the series anyway, i thought i'd ask about something here concerning "eternity."
did angelus really come back? i was hoping it was angel acting to scare off rebecca. he's done it before when they were fooling faith into revealing info about the mayor's plot. but this time he never broke from the act until after he was knocked unconscious. he does say to cordy and wes that he had to apologize, but that could be for either actually becoming angelus or faking it, so i don't know. is it meant to be unclear, or am i reading into this all wrong?

Yes, he came back. It was an artificial "moment of pure happiness", which made Angelus come back, but only temporarily. It was really Angelus.
