Any love for the band that released one of the top 25 albums of the decade, then followed it with a solid one, then an awful one?

I hated them when they first came out, then when I was in college I bought Room on Fire because I wanted to like them, and now I really enjoy this band a lot. Room on Fire I played back to back for a couple weeks straight while I was doing homework and shit. Great cd imo. So is, Is This It? now that I've had some time to not hate them.

Seems like there's little love for this band on AP.

First Impressions... is pretty awful compared to the first two. Listening to it for the first time this week. It starts off incredibly strong, but fizzles out after that with boring song after boring song. ROF and ITI though, classics.

There was a time, circa-2000/2001 when nearly all the music press/enthusiasts heralded this band as the "saviors of Rock & Roll" (literally! It was the feature title on their cover of NME), and the hyperbole continued and increased, leading to a debut album that came out at the optimal time for such a band - Nu-Metal and their mainstream antithesis boy bands had both relinquished their hold on the Top 40, leaving room for the Garage Rock Revivalist bands to saturate the radio for the first three years of the decade, with bands like The Vines, The White Stripes, The Black Keys, The Hives and The Strokes to become "hot." It was something somewhat new for strictly radio listeners.

Unfortunately, Is This Is? was merely a solid debut, and though they rode the wave of press and hype for a few years, it quickly became evident that they were unable to fill the role they were groomed for. In fact, their second album was incredibly formulaic and their last release was mediocre, and other bands emerged from the underground in the mid-'00s who did the Garage Rock Revivalist sound much better (King Khan and the Shrines, Black Lips, The Kills, The Muslims, etc.).

I always found it enertaining though when, around 2004-2006, nearly three years after the band was the talk-of-the-mainstream-music-town, any time an A-List celebrity was asked what they were listening to, in an attempt to come across as "hip," they'd invariably claim they "just got into the Strokes."

I'm not trying to be condescending when I ask this, I'm genuinely curious. Have you listened to much Garge Rock Revivalist acts in the last, say, ten years? Again, if you like the Strokes, more power to you.

I'd be interested to see what the average Strokes listener thinks of The Muslims, Black Lips or King Khan and the Shrines, honestly.

The Strokes essentially took a very minimalist, low-fi sound and turned it into trite Arena Rock.

The Strokes essentially took a very minimalist, low-fi sound and turned it into trite Arena Rock. It's not that good at all, truthfully.

If we're talking about FIOE, then yes, you could say they turned more into "Arena Rock" (though it wasn't a minimalist, lo-fi sound really). But that comparison really isn't fair for their better songs, which I think, do live up to the hype (The Modern Age, Someday, Hard to Explain, a few others)... There aren't any bands in the 15 previous years before the Strokes that did the sound better, and you'd be hardpressed to find more than a handful that do the sound better afterwards.

Not at all. They were influenced by Detroit Protopunk as well as Blues, Soul, roots music and R&B that predates it.

You're a fool if you believe the Strokes had anything to do with King Khan or Black Lips.

You don't know much about Garage Rock, I'm assuming.

But that comparison really isn't fair for their better songs, which I think, do live up to the hype (The Modern Age, Someday, Hard to Explain, a few others)...

Their songs aren't that impressive in the slightest.

There aren't any bands in the 15 previous years before the Strokes that did the sound better, and you'd be hardpressed to find more than a handful that do the sound better afterwards.

Mainstream Garage Rock Revivalist/Post-Punk/Alt Rock? The White Stripes and Black Keys do it much better, and even those two bands aren't necessarily great at the least.

Robototron
03/19/09, 06:38 PM
Saying the Strokes just ripped off much better Garage bands is simplifying things way too much. On Room On Fire they also ripped off Television.

Siren Silently
03/20/09, 04:21 PM
You're a fool if you believe the Strokes had anything to do with King Khan or Black Lips.

Fair enough. I was referring to the Soft Pack mostly, my bad for the confusion.

Mainstream Garage Rock Revivalist/Post-Punk/Alt Rock? The White Stripes and Black Keys do it much better, and even those two bands aren't necessarily great at the least.

I'd disagree there. White Blood Cells (arguably the best of their albums) is probably on the same level as "Is This It"... although the rest of the White Stripes catalog is definitely better than the Strokes. As far as the Black Lips, I've only heard their two latest; Good Bad Not Evil was very mediocre and I've just started listening to 200 Million.

The Muslims were not at all influenced by The Strokes either. You don't know much about Garage Rock and the roots of the sound, I assume. Listen to a Strokes album and then listen to Amoeba. They hardly sound alike.

As far as the Black Lips, I've only heard their two latest; Good Bad Not Evil was very mediocre and I've just started listening to 200 Million.
You think Good Bad Not Evil was mediocre, yet you love The Strokes. There's no accounting for taste, I suppose.

Siren Silently
03/21/09, 01:01 PM
I concede I don't know much about Garage Rock, I don't even listen to it; I'm not even going to argue about its roots. I'm just saying in the context of the bands I've listened to (which includes the White Stripes, the Soft Pack, the Black Lips...) I like the Strokes. I'll say, before you do, that I probably should listen to some 'real' garage rock (whatever that means) but as far as I'm concerned it's 2009 and no one has done the garagey sound with pop sensibilities as well as the Strokes have.

Compared to "Is This It" it is, I make no arguments for FIOE or Room on Fire. I've had the Black Lips name dropped more times than I care to remember, I was very disappointed upon listening to it.

first impressions of earth is easily the strokes best album. i think i appreciate it the most because they had finally broken out of their "lol let's play retro 60s-70s rock!" shtick and began to develop their own sound...and the songs were more fleshed out and not so immediately poppy. there's nothing wrong with being poppy and i like their first two albums too, but i just feel like they matured. as soon as they matured, they stopped getting as noticed. welp.

Is This It is a solid album, but they're still one of the weaker acts of the Garage Revival (though they certainly helped make it an acceptable trend in the blogosphere, making it easier for acts like Strange Boys, Thee Oh Sees, anything King Khan's done, Black Lips, the Soft Pack, the Fresh & Onlys, Screaming Females, etc. to gain notoriety and coverage.

I spin Is This It on occasion.

Nick's thoughts on the process of recording this album.

I won't do the next album we make like this. No way. It was awful-- just awful. Working in a fractured way, not having a singer there. I'd show up certain days and do guitar takes by myself, just me and the engineer. Some of the third album was done that way, but at least we were on the same page about what the arrangements and parts were. Seventy-five percent of this album felt like it was done together and the rest of it was left hanging, like some of us were picking up the scraps and trying to finish a puzzle together.
Then Julian on the end result.

"I mean ... yes ... It's a tough question because I think the whole point was that I was going to let things go so there's a bunch of stuff [on the record] I wouldn't have done."

People in the comments section are complaining about Nick looking like he doesn't care. He always looks like that. Just in the groove of his music. Thought that was a great performance even with Julian's slip up at the end.

I'm listening to First Impressions right now for the billionth time. Really hard for me to rank this at the bottom of their discography. Such a great record.

Nikolai says they are going into the studio in April to work on the new album. They are under contract for one more album so hopefully they aren't just doing this to get it all over with.

I doubt it. Usually it seems bands that release stuff just to be done with their contracts release live albums.

Wasn't huge on this song before but this performance made me listen to it quite a bit. Maybe my favorite of all their recent show performances. And in black and white.

I told someone I liked The Strokes one time and I don't think they were too happy I knew about them.

I asked if they have read the book Brave New World, because of the song Soma. I said "Because if you read it, there's a song a by The Strokes-" and then she cut me off before I could finish and said, "Well which one, there are 47 songs by The Strokes." A guy across the table from us called her out on sounding like a bitch and I just thought, "Well if you would've let me finish..."

I told her Soma and then she said "Oh well I hate that song I skip it every time I listen to that record."
