You can read a review here (http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/album/_/id/7370215/sufjanstevens?pageid=rs.Home&pageregion=triple1) for Sufjan Stevens new album, Illinois. Seriously, if you don't own this album, then go out there and get it. If you're skeptical or not even sure what this sounds like, then do a little previewing somewhere and I guarantee you won't be disappointed; amazing album.

Agreed. He can right a song about anything, as demonstrated by the song he wrote for NPR. So good.

i personally didn't enjoy this album. i've liked older sufjan stuff, but this one was too over the top for me. all of the pitchfork hype in the world couldn't even sway my thoughts on this one. hell, i'm even from illinois. but yeah, i'll take a pass.

I don't know if I like it as much as Michigan, we'll see...

I can understand what you're saying. My friend says it's just too much going on for her, although she's primarily a fan of Seven Swans. The entire project is over the top in terms of ambition, and the songs equally so. To each their own.

As for pitchfork hype, I was half-expecting them to tear it down for some reason or another.

How can the review not like the song, "John Wayne Gacy, Jr."? They aren't all Superman/Abraham Lincoln songs. He's just as much a part of history as anyone else in headlines. Plus how can these lines NOT make you shiver by the shear truth and creepiness of it?

"And in my best behavior
I am really just like him
Look beneath the floor boards
For the secrets I have hid"

agreed, one of the best, if not the best album of the year, close competition from the new denison witmer but who needs competition when you have those two incredible pieces of music

Is the new Denison Witmer Really comparable to Sufjan in terms of album of the year? Interesting. Sufjan sings on one of the tracks, right? I heard clips from a few of the songs on the Militia Group website and it did sound good. Might just have to pick it up and watch myself fall in love with it.

This is an amazing CD, if you don't have it or even know who he is, pick it up because you won't regret it. I don't think this one tops "Michigan" though, that will always be my favorite.

Michigan's your favorite, huh? Biased much? hehe :)

PS: Can someone do a review of the Denison Witmer cd? Pretty Please? And where's the cheapest place to pick it up? I might just do the CD+shirt offer from TMG store. Thanks.

PPS: Yes, i'm trying to up the post count on this thread all by myself so that more people notice it and get into Sufjan Stevens. :woot:

BIG UPS to J.K. for posting about sufjan. I think that Illinois is his masterpiece -- his voice sounds fully matured, the melodies are undeniable, and the album flows impossibly well.

Has anyone heard his christmas albums? They have some of the most amazing renditions of christmas tunes I've ever heard, I can't stop listening to it. And I'm jewish!

I didn't find enough songs that I liked on this CD though. The ones that I did where really great. UFO, Decatur, Gacy, Jacksonville are all amazing songs imo.

I didn't really like anything else. Chicago was decent but a bit repetitive and everything else was a little too much.

Taken a while for Surfjan to be mentioned in news and not just in the forums it seems. Good work finally, great album.

It's good to see the continued press this album is getting. I garuntee you, this guy is going to be huge. In a few years time he'll get tons of recognition just for completing a few of these state albums, and it'll be well deserved. I think he'll go down as one of the great American artists.

it dosent top michigan but its still amazing. "come on! feel the illinoise!" could be in a disney movie. and for seven swans to be the bside album to michigan and have that many great songs is amazing. but enjoy your rabbit blows, honestly.

Illinois is the best record i've heard this year.

and you can get the new Denison Witmer CD at Borders for pretty cheap.

Thank you, I have been saying that this album is not as good as any of his other stuff and everyones been like naw, this album is AMAZING. I had the album 2 weeks before anyone wrote a review on it and I still didnt think it was band. People just jump on the "indie" singer songwriter tag and run with it.. I guess its the cool thing now. Pitchfork is very pretentious also, they think they are the shit. ha Intonation was a hell of a time though.

Oh and Rolling Stone writes shitty reviews.

Several weeks ago we wrote a review (http://www.indieaccessonline.com/Reviews/SufjanReview.html) of the record as well. John Wayne Gacy, Jr. is one of the most engaging songs ever written.

I WANT RYAN TO FUCKING WRITE A REVIEW FOR THIS DISC!!! hahahah omg this is the BEST cd of the year...
lamest post ever. why have him write a review for this record? it'd just be gushing about it, like almost all of his other reviews about pitchfork-loved acts. to ask for another good review of this record, which probably would say the same exact things all of the other reviews already stated, has to be somewhat akin to masturbation of the ego

Awesome, thanks. I guess I didn't see it the first time it was posted. Not a bad review, by the way, and I think you've convinced me to purchase this cd. Suggestion: If you're writing a review that isn't one of the typical artists of this website, then a rough Genre (yes, genre's generally suck, i know) or an "if you're interested in.." sort thing might help to get some people to read the review.

This CD is great. Much better than "Michigan" I think. "John Wayne Gacy" is an amazing song, but Im surprised no one has mentioned "Casimir Pulaski Day". THat is hands down the best song on the CD.

But then again, I like his more stripped down songs. "Seven Swans" is my favorite CD of his.

and the new Denison Witmer is fantastic. Sufjan plays or sings on like 5 tracks. The Pitchfork review made sure to mention this fact about 80 times in their review of his album. If Sufjan wasnt playing on this record, they probabaly would have given the album like a 5 instead of a 7.1. Theyre so in love with Sufjan its annoying.
