Murray is riding an incredible hot streak with how he finished last season and what he's done the last week or two. It's tough to pick against him right now. I think I need to see him beat Federer in a slam though. I'd like to see Nadal have a good showing here after the beating that was handed to him last year.
As for the women, I feel safe in saying that Ivanovic will never win another major. Jankovic needs to get the monkey off her back and this one is a nice opportunity. if Serena can stay focused through the first week she'll probably take it.

Mardy Fish!!!
I like Djokovic to win again this year, I would love to see Nadal win it but hard court is just not his surface. With that said I dont expect Federer to make the final, hes just off his game and Murray is on an incredible hot streak and I think its very possible we see a rematch of last years Australian Open Final. As for the women I'm feeling a Jankovic/Williams sister final (not sure which one Serena has been hot but Venus is consistent), possibly the Serbs sweep?

I love how people say US tennis is in its darkest days right now, despite the fact that they probably have 6 or 7 in the top 100.
EDIT: Just looked and it's 7. Isn't Isner meant to be good? And he isn't even in the top 100 yet.
British number 1 woman Anne Keothavong faces Chakvetadze(sp?) in the first found, and Mel South who is on the verge on the top 100 faces Marion Bartoli!

I think the future is looking good for the US. With Querry, Isner, and Young.
I'm liking Murray for the Australian.

The guy sucks from the baseline, can't move, and can't volley. He's not that confident either so once you break him in a set or get a point off his serve in a breaker it's over.
US men's tennis isn't good at all right now. 6 or 7 in the top 100 isn't saying much for a country of this size and one that has a storied tennis past. Roddick and Blake only have 2, 3 years left. Querrey is improving nicely. Young isn't really doing anything. For every decent tourney he has he seems to follow them with a few first round exits.
Roddick's new coach was hired 4 years too late. Being with his brother, basically a yes man, and Connors was a waste of time. Stefanki has already got Andy to lose 15 pounds and finally told him his forehand sucks now. The problem is he had coaches after Gilbert who thought he was only a tweak here or there away from being #1 when in fact he needed major changes.

I am hoping to see Keothavong, Djokovic and Federer on Monday if I am up early enough! Gonna be hopefully getting up 6am ish every morning to catch a good 5 or so hours of Grand Slam tennis for the next two weeks! Then essays...fun.
What's with all the Roddick bashing? He had a good run in Qatar, he doesn't have much of a chance for me in the Australian though. Possible clash of Roddick V Querrey in the third. Doesn't Isner hold the record for 10 aces in a row? Isane haha.

If it's between Federer and Nadal, I'm with Federer for sure. I love Federer, I hope he has somewhat of a comeback year this year. Other players I wouldn't mind seeing win is: Roddick, Djokovic, Gonzalez, Ferrero.
Hoping for a Sharapova/Ivanovic final and hoping Ana wins.
Murray. He's been incredibly hot as of late including winning his last six matches against Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. The only one out of the top 3 who I see making into the final is Federer.
Also, Ivanovic was the weakest number 1 in women's tennis I've seen in awhile. I think Serena Williams takes the women's side.

He had a run to the finals in Qatar because he didn't play anyone. Look at his opponents and he didn't play any top 10 player. Once he got to the finals he got smoked by Murray.
I actually am expecting a nice summer for Roddick. He'll take the next few months to get use to these changes (may even have a nice finish in one of the two US Masters series events in March) and then should start to get going around Wimbledon. If he makes it to the quarters or better in the Aussie Open that will be a bonus. He should beat Querrey easily though if that matchup happens.

For me Roddick peaked years ago, but you do present a good argument.

For me Roddick peaked years ago, but you do present a good argument.Oh, I agree in that he peaked years ago. I was just presenting my theory on what he could've done to have kept in closer range to Federer. It's like in that 04 Wimbledon final after the rain delay when Federer made his adjustment and absolutely zoned Roddick he just freaked out. He probably thought up until that point that power would always win him those types of matches or at least keep them close.
I don't think he has the tools to make grand slam finals anymore unless a draw opens up in a ridiculous fashion. I think he could probably make two slam semifinals each of the next two years and that would round out a good, but underachieving career.

Keothavong just lost to Chakvetadze. :-(
6-1, 6-7, 6-1.
Very gutsy in the second set, she had the trainer on at 3-3 and held it out very well in the tie-break, forcing Chakvetadze to make a few erroes. Unlucky in the last, she never really got going. :-( Plus the stupid umpire made Chakvetadze serve first even though she was not meant to, and both players and everyone just went along with it. Ridiculous.
I now want Eurosport to actually show some tennis instead of just chatting about Murray!

You also have Jelena Dokic who won today as well. She's been off the radar for yeeeeeeeears.
Seppi did cause Federer a few problems in the final two sets actually. I think he had a set point in the third? It's a shame he couldn't gain any of his 10 break points. :-( Federer showed a few flashes of brilliance but this was hardly a walkover. He is not play 100% just yet, I can assure you, so I wouldn't worry.

Murray is on court now, come on! The match is live on terrestrial TV at midnight, which is pretty awesome I think! The amount of live tennis we have here on terrestrial is shockingly low.

It's coming off a little flatter and with much more pop. The angles he creates have always been great but with the extra power it should help him on hard courts.

Yes, hard courts are probably his worst surface (imo)...but I'm sure a lot of people were saying that about grass but look what happened there. ;-)The thing about grass is that Wimbledon has slowed down their courts so much. If Nadal was playing on those courts pre-2002 he would struggle to make it to the second week let alone win. The courts at the Aussie Open give him a break too since they have so much sand in their finish that they play slow and his spin is amplified. One reason he'll probably always have trouble in New York is because they'll keep it faster since Americans will never be10-15 point rally guys.

I'm on Murray to win, not only because i'm a brit, but he's in sparkling form, and seems to get under the skin of the top 2, i can see him overtaking Djokovic at least by the end of the year. Is Del Potro in the tournament, i didn't check the full line up. he seems like a good player, just a bit of a cry baby!
As for the womens, well no one in the women's can get any consistency going. A decent outside bet might be Dinara Safina, glad to see 5 british women in the opening round, we're never gunna win it (well give laura robson a few years) but we're moving in the right direction.

As for grass, like I said above, they've slowed down the courts so much so it's really no surprise that he's been able to have a lot of success on it. If they keep on this pace of slowing it down they'll have a clay court in 10 years.

Pretty much. Though Hewitt is a bit of a waste these days, don't think he'll be around much longer to be honest.Yeah he'll retire next year probably. The injuries he's had have taken their toll. He also made it to #1 because of his fitness, consistency, and defense. Now, he's nowhere near as fast as the top players and their power/great defensive abilities have passed him by. He basically came along at the opportune time between the transition from serve and volley to power/speed styles.

yeah, though, she also made it last longer in some cases by not getting broken...she should have won it at deuce 8 though, stepped back on the one shot and missed it.
Also, McEnroe was saying, and it wasn't supposed to be on air apparently, that her 2nd serve that they called a double fault wasn't actually out...so, she might have won it prior to the deuce as well

See I'm the opposite for the most part. I prefer games where both players are pushed to their limits rather than a match where someones wins relatively easily. And this goes for any sport. I like being on the edge of my seat. I'd rather see my favourite players lose in great matches than win in boring ones. If there's no competition I don't see the point. Sport should never be predictable.Well I never said I thought close matches were boring haha. I was assuming people were claiming Federer/Nadal were boring because most of their matches are easy wins. Unlike you though I never want to see my favorite players/teams lose under any circumstance. I'd rather see Tiger win a tourney by 10 than lose by 1, or see Federer/Nadal win in straight sets than lose in a 5th set breaker. If I don't have a rooting interest then I'd like to see the closest possible match or tournament though obviously.
Back to the Aussie, Djokovic/Marcos should be a great match as long as the latter doesn't have any cramping issues.

It will not be interesting, and Federer will win in 3. So there.
I used to love Nadal but its soooooo boring now. I still love Murray though, how could you not!?! I think the top 4 seeds should have 2-0 and 5-0 40-0 disadvantages :-P The first few rounds are just really dull for the top few......................

Don't get me wrong, I never like seeing my favorites lose. Ever. Ha ha. I don't think you can be a fan if you do. But winning by a mile doesn't mean a match needs to be boring and lately I've found that when say Nadal thrashes an opponent it's well, boring. That's my issue with this tourney. I don't know if it's because people are overly intimidated by him or he's just too good but I've lost interest. I don't feel like he's being tested at the moment and it's not really interesting. But it might just be bias talking seems I prefer Federer. Haha. I'm probably not explaining myself very well but shit happens.
And yes it should be a great one. Hopefully.

And yes it should be a great one. Hopefully.Well, the intimidation is just a product of Nadal being that much better than most people he plays. He's at worst the second fastest player out there, puts the most spin on the ball, is getting more power on serves/ground strokes every day, is mentally tough, and has the confidence of having won 5 slams. I know I'd be a bit concerned stepping on to the court against that haha.
Great stuff from Novak as he gets through to face Roddick. Hopefully Roddick can make a match of that.

God Damn spoilers!
This is the first time that I have posted on this site in ages (but it's Oz Day, so fuck off, lol), but I am soooo happy Murray lost (despite my Scot heritage). For the men's, I would love Verdasco v Del Potro, but my head says, Federer v Tsonga.
For the women's, I reckon Dementiava v Safina. But I want Dokic to make it through, maybe against Suarez-Narvarro!

Happy Oz Day mate!
But onto more importance... can Dokic get past Safina?!?! Safina isn't playing like a 3rd seed right now and Dokic has a real chance of going to the Semis in my opinion. But can Suarez get to the Semis, and then beat Serena, which is I assume how it will go down?!?!?
decisionpending
01/26/09, 05:24 AM
Yet in the men's 1/4 finals, all the matches look exciting!
Nadal v Simon
Verdasco v Tsonga (the match I am looking forward to!)
Roddick v Djokavic
Federer v Del Potro
Shit, this is one of the better Aus Opens of late!
Inaction
01/26/09, 05:34 AM
Happy aussie day dude.
Dokic can definitely beat Safina. None of the women's top seeds really seem to be playing well. Suarez can I think, Serena might not have even made it this far if Azarenka hadn't retired.
As for the guys, yeah definitely. I'm pulling for Simon (haha unlikely), Verdasco (unlikely as well), Djokavic and Federer respectively. But it'll be great either way. Definitely the best Aussie Open i've watched for awhile. Ah. So good.
Crazy that 7 of the top 8 seeds moved onto the quarters.

no it won't Federer is 15-2 lifetime against Roddick.Doesn't mean anything. Their matches are always closer than the overall record shows. Most of their sets go at least 6-4 and many end in breakers. Roddick is also much more fit now, is hitting the ball deeper in the court and is a bit more confident coming to net. That doesn't mean Federer can't win 3-2-3 but it should be close.
As long as Rafa makes the final on his side of the draw that secures an awesome first slam final of the year.

like i said. roddick had no chance in winning. he has won 8 sets against Federer in 18 matches now.
Roddick's seemingly never going to turn the corner.
federer and nadal are just flat out better than him, this is the best shape he has been in, in years yet he couldn't even take a set from feddy.
