Was just wondering if anybody from oversaes knew of any Australian bands, because the music scene here in Australia is awesome and the bands here deserve some exposure overseas.

How did you hear about Ellington? didnt know many people in the states knew them,
The first 4 bands mentioned are sort of older bands, the ones I mentioned before are up and coming bands that are not that big yet.
I just think there are so many un recognized great bands over here that deserve recognition.

I'm actually friends with them. I received their first EP about two years ago and began speaking with Jake. We talk frequently -- great guys, very good pop music. As soon as they find some bands to tour with, they'll break in the U.S.

Agreed on Closure in moscow, gyroscope, ellington, & getaway Plan. Love me some good Australian stuff.
The Temper Trap, Birds of Tokyo, and Opshop (from NZ) are some of my more recent favorites.

No one's mentioned Pivot, really good instrumental act. First record, Make Me Love You, is laid back post-rock stuff. Their most recent, last year's O Soundtrack My Heart, is much more electronic--which makes sense since they got signed to Warp.

I can't think of an Australian band that hasn't been mentioned already.
Every single band mentioned FTW.
Except the obvious shitty ones.
Also Deez Nuts. I saw them once and they sucked. Alot. I can't see how all those hardcore gets loved them so much. I don't know, not a big Deez Nuts fan myself, but they seem to have a hugggge following on the DL around Australia.
I'd mention three more bands/people.
The Sundance Kids - their singer makes me ejaculate every time he opens his mouth, PERFECT live show, emoey, acoustic, poppy music, but damn good.
Josh Pyke - Big time acoustic-pop-singing-awesome.
And come on guys, really?
Frenzal Rhomb!!!
How could you miss out on them.

The australian music scene is junk, every band tries to be "indie". Look at The Getaway Plan and Something With Numbers, they both changed their sound to accomodate the public needs.
Having said that, there are a few bands that go alright:
Parkway Drive
Something With Numbers (Old)

Good to see this thread heading into some footy talk...although not a good year for the Warriors, back to their old road match tricks - by which I mean losing every game...least all the teams are generally in with a chance, few surprises this year with the Doggies back to winning and Manly being average as to say the least...
Surely Parkway Drive are the best thing to come out of Aussie in a while, is there any way to make Thirsty Merc STOP making music? Listening to that shit makes me want to hurt myself...
Also, I'm too lazy to see if there's a thread for NZ music, anyone got any comments on good NZ bands? And I don't want to hear any sheep jokes...

I have no knowledge of hard core whatsoever - FOB is as 'hard' as it gets on my iPod (go on, mock me. You know you want to.) But there's that new band out that one rockquest called Five Point Star or something.... I don't how good they are but just thought I'd throw their name out there.

If it's cold in the Hawkes Bay it must be bloody freezing everywhere else!
I'd mock you for FOB but that'd be too easy...although I have to admit, I do have one of their earlier albums and saw them play in Auckland earlier in the year, but that was only cos All-American Rejects were opening, would have happily gone home after they played but figured I'd paid for it...so what else graces your iPod then?
I'll put in a good word here for Streetwise Scarlet (I hope you've heard of them)...I remember that metal band that won Rockquest last year with the chick that was an amazing guitar player...

Ahahaha yes, to mock Fall Out Boy is to lack the means of displaying witty rhetoric ;-)
Yeah I was at that concert too, and I gotta say AAR out shone FOB by a mile. It was rather dissapointing, especially for such a huge FOB fan as myself.
As far as the other music I listen too: I love alot of motown artists, particularly Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. Then there's the likes of Cat Stevens, Jeff Buckley, John Lennon, creedence Clearwater Revival, The Eagles, Kings of Leon, Elton John, My Morning Jacket, Glasvegas, a bit of Kanye West.... Basically anything that evokes musical excellence (yes, I am aware that FOB does not fall under the 'excellence' umbrella, but hey I'm 16yrs old Im obliged to like 'em.)
And you are often caught listening to..?
As for Streetwise Scarlet, I've been meaning to get their album for so long it's not funny. I suppose I'm still wondering if it's worth buying a whole album of their stuff or not....
And the guitarist chick from Rockquest is not what I would consider an 'amazing' guitar player. She just has fast fingers. That's as far as it goes from what I've seen.

Totally agree with AAR putting on a way better show than FOB, been hoping they come back for a headlining show of their own...
Interesting music taste you've got, can't go wrong with some classic old school...been getting into a bit of metal lately, As I Lay Dying, Between the Buried and Me, etc..and a bit of the scene stuff, Underoath, Emery, A Day to Remember, anything that evokes musical talent ;)...and of course the greats like Muse and Thrice...and anything that's NOT rap...
Yeah, go buy the Streetwise Scarlet album, I know a couple of the guys in the band, they need all the support they can get but they're great guys and work hard at it, pretty much impossible to make it in NZ these days...went and saw the Datsuns play here the other night, got to have a chat to a few of them, think they were happy to see some Kiwis in the crowd haha...
Back to the Aussie theme, why is it only the really bad Aussie bands I can remember...Savage Garden, End of Fashion, Empire of the Sun, the failed INXS reunion (which was never going to work)...suppose there was Silverchair, Powderfinger and Wolfmother...

apparently the guitarist is a real dick, cause this girl i was dating said he was trying to get in her pants and when she refused he started sleazing onto her poor little sister n asking her if she would ever sleep with her own sister, such a sicko! so i hate them more after she told me that

yeah exactly, a friend is one thing, a sister is another kettle of fish. especially if you dont know them at all. to just come out and say that is unbelieveable.

I am obsessed with The Amity Affliction lately. They just hit the spot so perfectly.
Don't remind me that it's cold down here in lil old Hawkes Bay.
Blah.
I have no knowledge of hard core whatsoever - FOB is as 'hard' as it gets on my iPod (go on, mock me. You know you want to.) But there's that new band out that one rockquest called Five Point Star or something.... I don't how good they are but just thought I'd throw their name out there.
I live in Hawkes Bay too :)
Well for now.
Melbourne soon :)

the Datsuns are in Canada?!?! Wow, go little kiwi boys! I must say I am rather a fan of them.
As for the Aussie bands you mentioned, early Silverchair was pretty good (I know, everybody says that, but there's a reason for that) and Wolfmother are amazing. Actually the guy from Wolfmother - his name excapes me - has just reformed the band with a new line up and possibly a new name. Pretty exciting stuff.

most ppl i know prefer the new stuff these days, although Freak Show is still my fav, but the new one just behind that
Wolfmother are still called that, saw them in feb at Sound Relief (one of the last bands i remember before being plastered), and they playin with Acca Dacca next yr... theyre still good, the band was Stockdale pretty much anyway, added a 2nd guitar, sounds good, its chunkier
daniel johns used to be awesome, and he even banged natalie imbruglia which scores points in my book, but none of that forgives the straight lines video.

Well they're not everyone's cup of tea but all tastes are different, didn't used to get into hardcore/metal but loving it at the moment, most people just hear screaming and think it's crap but there's tons of talented metal bands musically out there, people just can't get past the stigma...but we'll obviously agree to disagree to what we think constitutes good music...
The Datsuns are huge in Europe, we were surprised they'd even bothered to tour North America, judging by the tiny venue we saw them at, but least they're still doing well, haven't picked up on any other Kiwi bands doing well here, except Flight of the Conchords, they're freaking massive, usually the first thing someone says when we say we're from NZ...used to be LOTR but not anymore...
Has anyone heard any rumours about who's playing Big Day Out this year? Can't be too long until the release the first lineup?? Already preparing myself to be disappointed again and be saving my $150 on not buying a ticket but hoping they can organise a decent lineup this time...

omg did anyone see the spoof of straight lines on tv?! it was recently here in bris i saw it. so hilarious xD they change the lyrics to something like from "wake me up low with the fever" to "just because i wear so much make up" and there's more about how he's not gay coz he was with nat and that he's a "straight guy" instead of singing "straight lines". it was actually kinda scary but they did a really good job of taking the piss out of the whole song and video. at the end daniel hugs and kisses ben and chris. it's so funny :P
