View Full Version : Bands with excellent live sets
When it comes to actual talents, not just fun/aesthetics. Like perfect pitch, amazing flow, live sets that make you leave saying that was the best set you've been to in a long time.
I'd have to say Metric definitely. Saw them a few years back and to this day it was the best set I've ever seen. Emily Haines is a goddess.

Portishead were boring as fuck at Coachella last year. I blame whoever does set times for putting them in between Kraftwerk and fucking Prince. What a downer in between what essentially amounted to a pair of dance sets. Probably would've loved it otherwise. :/
Lykke Li's live sets are spectacular. Really liking her at the moment, seeing her for the third time early next month.

The National would be a cool one to see. Did they play Gospel by any chance?

although i may be scrutinized for saying this, one of the best concerts i have ever been to was Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, and Kevin Devine. they all put on a fantastic show. but every time i die was also really good

Oh yeah, The National are awesome live. I saw them with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah in 05 and still don't understand how like, half the venue left right after CYHSY played, missing the superior band.

Can't remember the exact setlists but I don't believe they have when I've seen them.

reel big fish. they play the hits and they play them well plus they're funny as hell
and against me! when they're playing a full length set, if they're opening or on warped, they suck cause you get 2:1 new wave ratio and no one wants that

I can't stand clap your hands say yeah.
Is the national worth getting into or are they similar?

I think both are stellar.
CYHSY's first album was fun, but their second was terrible. Also they sucked live.
I know I'm a minority in disliking Portishead at Coachella. Pretty much everyone I know absolutely loved their set.

Speaking of Glass Houses, I saw Anberlin and Straylight at the Glass House in Pomona. They surprised me with how good they were, everyone had a blast.
Thrice, Jacks Mannequin and Copeland have all impressed me as well. (i can usually only get rides to the more 'mainstream' shows.)

yeah the crowd turnout wasnt that strong, had the upstairs blocked off.. i was shocked!
they did a few Casually dressed tracks, Your revolution is a joke. i thought it was a real strong set. and the new tracks they played were well good. but i agree, the new album was nothing special.
i saw them play the academy just as Tales dont tell themselves came out and it was stunning. one of the best gigs i've seen. this was just sub standard though :(
did you ever catch them on any of the early tours for casually dressed and four ways??

I saw them tour the Between Order and Model EP in a tiny pub in Nottingham, supporting Earthtone9. There was about 10 people there (half of them parents!) and they played for about 20 mins.
That was a good night!

Nah, the tours they did clashed with my exams. And when they played a show I could go to, I couldn't find anyone to go with! My (old) friends were into all your dj thisandthat, so they wouldn't come. And I wasn't gonna go on my own haha. I've now lost contact with those friends though, woot woot.

the pinacle for me was the last casually dressed tour and they did the civic. awesome. played the album in a row. then came out and did 4 tracks of the EP's blew me away
and i dont think i've seen a better intro to a gig than starting up with the intro to 10 scene points to the winner. but then as it drops into the fast part go into rookie of the year instead. fucking mint

Not sure if you know Rock City at all, but there were so few people that they put it in the basement (max capacity is about 350). It was pretty full in there, but still probably only about 300 people. Brilliant gig though.

Awesome pics, thanks for posting that link! I mean I'm biased and love Tom to death but I'm glad to hear that you liked their set even though you don't like them as a band. I really think they put on a stellar live show. I saw them with Weezer in October (who I thought were HORRIBLE live, by the way, what a disappointment) and their set was flawless.

The only JM I have had the pleasure of seeing was I believe in 07. Could have been 06. I really don't remember. But it was like 90+ degrees (in Wisconsin, that's retched) for quite some time, super humid, and then it dropped to like 48 and it VERY severely stormed. We were all soaking wet and cold and all felt sick, but a very good portion of the crowd stuck it out. Andrew wanted to put on the show when the rest of Summerfest was shut down. So they waited for the rain to subside, they dried off everything.. and he did a full show. It was powerful.
I definitely agree with you about Jacks. Incredible. Then again, so was SoCo.

Wow, I actually agree with pretty much all of this. Hahah i really love Keith Urban; he honestly is great live. Angels & Airwaves have been great every time I've seen them, with the exception of warped. They weren't terrible, but just not up to their usual standards, And the matches are probably one of the best performers i have ever seen.
