While I thoroughly enjoy them there is no way that Strictly Rude classifies as one of the greatest ska albums of all time and they are nowhere near the best ska band out today. Go away off my Earth.

i hate streetlight, just not my thing.

i love big d though, they're really the only ska band i can get in to consistantly now regardless of my mood. if im in a real ska mood, i can listen to how it goes, if im feeling political, pumped, or down, i can listen to strictly rude

the slackers= the best ska band to emerge in the past 25 years. straight up. i can say that and i will go to the grave believing that

and i personally enjoy big d more than streetlight. though i think streetlight has the better lyrics, by far.

Big d's alright I wouldn't by any means consider them the best ska band out there. Give me Gipsy Hill or every other early album over Strictly Rude.

Slackers are good but I'm not for the more traditional ska sound. My vote goes to Streetlight.

not my kind of sound, but i like their attitudes towards their music. i posted a quote from one of the band members in another one of their threads a while back

although not a band i'd ever associate with as being the best ska band or recording any of the great ska albums. you would be struggling to even classify them as ska really...

reel big fish are great, and are probably my second favorite ska band. i got back stage at one of their shows, they were all super cool guys, they do a lot for their fans and really care about putting on a good show. BUT. there is absolutely ZERO depth to their music. its all meaningless party garbble. big d stands for shit while maintaining all the above mentioned good qualities of rbf, which, in my opinion, makes them worlds better

I'd have a hard time comparing thems since OPIV has such a small discography in comparison to Big D. Just sayin'.

They're in Camp Street Studios in boston recording with Adam Taylor(The Lemonheads, The Dresdon Dolls) and Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Radiohead). They both just did the new Portugal. The Man record.

The new album is named Fluent In Stroll.

Yeah, I'd have a tendency to go with OPIV when it comes to personal preference and probably with lyrics as well. But in terms of just the music I think Big D is better. But they're both great in their own right.

I like these dues alot. I just wish they played their home state more... And while I'll agree with all the statements that Streetlight is a better band, Big D is my personal favorite between the two.

Can't wait to hear a new record. I just hope they cut it down by a track or two. Strictly Rude was a great record, but it kind of lagged toward the end.

For me, it's when they try to get really dubby or really fast on that record where they lose me. I know they're capable of writing high-speed, hardcore/punk tracks ("L.A.X." or alot of "Good Luck") but for whatever reason the two or three faster tracks on that record are ones I always want to skip.

i absolutely adored this band, but strictly rude was such a let down. to me it sounds like they abandoned a style that they had perfect and took to just kind of writing generic ska-punk songs that lacked the lyrical substance from before.

do you have the vinyl release? the last track on that makes the end of the record so much better. without that track, id definitely agree, the last two tracks arent anything exceptional

if by lacking the old lyrical substance you mean they dont just sing about partying, then im sorry, but songs like raw revolution and try out your voice are exceptional because of what they're talking about

they sang about politics before those songs, check "president" on how it goes. i mean their new songs don't hit me the way LAX, cutshow, chicago, flashlight, the difference, scenester, or checklist do

In the band's defense, they wrote a few songs that are lyrically similar to the ones you've mentioned (particularly "L.A.X.," "Checklist," and "Scenester"), but because they were faster/"more punk rock" opted to leave them off the record and put them all on the split they did with Brain Failure.

holyballs
04/04/09, 04:30 PM
yea i have everything the band has done. the split had some good songs, like ruin you and running young. but "faded" does really have some cringe worthy lines, and "i'm yours boston" is basically dave doing hi best tim armstrong impression, and i really don't think it works out at all.

that's another thing actually, to me it sounds like he changed his singing style a lot on strictly rude, he doesn't really have the yelp that he used to anymore.

I agree fully with the change in singing style, in that y'know, he's actually a singer now. Haha. As for "Faded," the lyrics are a bit, uh, y'know...Simplistic, but it drives the point home, serves it's purpose, etc.
But to be fair, I'm a big fan of any song that rails against the shit bands of today. So I'm biased. :-)

i heard them play like 5 new songs live back in april.
the transition from How It Goes to Strictly Rude was pretty much a transition that turned down the punk and upped the ska. i feel like the transition from Strictly Rude to Fluent In Stroll will definitely be the same, as in the punk will be turned down even more (if it's even there!) and the ska will shine brightly.

the songs i heard them play live were definitely good, nothing like strictly rude or how it goes.

its pretty awesome i guess, it's as if they're giving the world a taste of what they're made of, you know? they can play fast punk, chilled out reggae, and punchy ska beats. this band is awesome.

Definitely not album of the year, but I agree with you in so-much as it's a really great record with a unique sound. It's upbeat and catchy -- really great summer record.

My one gripe is that some of the songs have lyrics that border on cheesy. But it fits with the music, so it makes sense. Just not my thing.

From what I've read about the record, it's more about the band being in a happier spot than they were previously. The music (and lyrics) reflect that. It's more optimistic, far more upbeat...

dave's lyrics have always been pretty cheesy at times. thats just how he writes. like when i heard not fucking around i was just luahging. i loved it. theres something to be said about how great he is

the thing that i love about it is, when i read that, one of the things dave said was that 'we just came off a great election' and i instantly said 'oh fuck. this election was far from great, this record is going to suck'

but when i listened to it, they still talk about politics, but its not in a way thats like 'shit sucks we gotta change it'. instead its in a 'we know whats wrong and we're gonna see if whats transpired can fix it.' which i love. cause i really feel people who are hardcore liberal or conservative are blind, but this is completely different. its like, they liked the outcome of the election but havent declared victory, they're going to wait and hope things turn out the right way

wow.

they played with two local bands and ill scarlett, who is one of my buddy's favorite bands but i didn't know very well. they put on a pretty sick show and im definitely going to check them out more.

i know they played
-police state
-milkshakes and razor blades
-1a
-take it for granted
-extra, extra
-mary jane [last song] (with sean p rogan from big d on guitar, and the dollies doing backup vocals)
-other songs i dont know...

then big d played. jesus christ did they play. they were absolutely amazing. the only two downsides i had with the show werent even part of the show. the trombone player was absent....which i find odd cause he wasnt at the last time they headlined buffalo either. i feel theres gotta be a reason. and my favorite doped up dollie, simone, wasnt there

but the show was incredible. i was front row right in dave's face the whole time. during lax he was standing on the barracade giving the mic to the fans, during bender, he crowd surfed, almost busted his ass getting back up on stage, but didnt miss a beat. they didnt have any bouncers. they had a projection screen behind them that played some pretty funny ass stuff. and they tore the fucking house up.

-doped up dollies on a one way ticket to blood
-steady riot
-noise complaint
-a kiss a weak
-not fucking around
-shining on
-breaking the bottle
-fluent in stroll
-strictly rude
-------exit dollies-----------
-hell on earth
-LAx
-5 kids down
-what?! (the hell are you gonna do)
------enter dollies----------
-describe the sky
-been wishing on
-walling paddle
-bender (the projection screen was playing old black and white pbr commercials during this song)
-known to be blue (with one of the dollies singing lead and sean playing guitar instead of piano)
-i,i,i (highlight for me. this song means so much to me)
-souped up vinyl
-little bitch (little ryan on the setlist)
--------------------------------------------------------
-my girlfriend's on drugs
-we can live anywhere

all in all, i couldnt have asked for anything more. they played from about 10:45 to 12:30 and it was seriously amazing. the only song i wish they had played that they didnt was 175, but they played just about everything else i wanted to hear.

Ha, no idea. I think I checked them out once, but really passingly while in the midst of another album, so it wasn't a fair shot. I'm on "Down Around Here" right now, and I actually really enjoy this album. I'd like it more if it were warm and sunny out, and if I weren't snowed in, but hey, why can't I pretend it's summer? Yeah, I definitely don't like this nearly as much as you do, but I like it enough for future listens.

The punk and ska influences are obvious, but at the same time I don't know if I can really call it a ska album. If anything, it feels like an old school pop rock group, like the illegitimate love child of some Warped Tour band with trumpets and the Beach Boys.

WOW. big d is the best fucking live band ever.

the dean of fredonia schools called twice to complain, and they had to shut the show down 4 shows early cause the building was "losing power" and by the last song the mics were all shutting off.

fucking amazing. i talked to everybody in the band except the drummer too, they're all such cool guys.

did not know. sean p rogan left the band. he got married and doesnt go on the road now, the new guitarist the guy from suburban legends, has been in the band for 2 weeks

the album is done, im pretty sure. it's gonna be more of a punk record which really disappoints me because i loved fluent in stroll. but when i hung out with the guys last they told me it was the most fun to make but the reception from the kids really took the wind outta their sails. huge bummer. one of the problems with the punk community, not enough room to grow your sound.

I think the issue is more with the "ska" fans than the "punk" fans, as far as these guys go. "Punk" fans tend to be willing to let bands progress these days (in fact, most people shit all over bands who don't). But "ska" fans freak out if a band has one song without horns or upstrokes.

And that Big D record was definitely not a ska album. It was a great record, it was a fun record but...I see why most of their fanbase didn't get too into it live.

You guys know that they don't even consider themselves to be ska, right? Apparently Conti hates it when people say they're ska.

That's what I hear anyways. I have a clarinet player in my ska band and he takes lessons with Jim. That's my source.

stupidtyonparad

wrong. paul used to wear home made t-shirts that just said "ska" on them.

these guys have no problem being called ska at all. the reason they called "strictly rude" ..."strictly rude" was because it was a strictly ska record (according to them)

plus who the hell is conti anyways? are you sure you're talking about the right band?

risingdown360

I'm sure they hate it when people refer to them as a ska band. But y'know, when you play music of a certain style. Y'know, the one with horns and upstrokes and such. And when you play the "Ska Is Dead Tour." People are going to call you as such...

And just an FYI? I wasn't referring to the band -- I was referring to these guys...

I would hate for them to do a straight ska-punk record after hitting perfection with Steady Riot and experimenting a bit with Fluent in Stroll. But I'm curious to see what they do next, regardless.

well what they were saying before is that it's going to be a thrash punk/ska record. so, again, unless they changed direction, looks like that's what we're getting.

but they told me personally last summer that it was going to be a folky ska album that kind of combined all their different sounds. that's what i personally was hoping for, but that idea obviously changed from the time i talked with them to the time they started doing press for the album

I knew that first bit about what they said it was going to sound like -- but they were supposed to have the album done and released by now. Haha. I'm thinking there was a change in direction. And quite frankly? The "folky ska" sound seems like it might be the route they would take after the last album.

When you've been a band as long as they have, I don't know how satisfying a ska/punk/thrash record would be. But I think what they want to achieve is a high-energy sound more than actually sounding "punk." And a "folky ska" record might be a good way to achieve that. Shrug. We shall see!
