View Full Version : The use of the word "epic" to describe music...

... is now approaching or is at the state of overuse. It's becoming as desensitized of meaning as "amazing" and "awesome" have become.
Just because a song is good doesn't necessarily make it "epic."

I agree with it. I will only use it in a circumstance where the music is truly epic.

I try not to use "epic" to describe music at all. I'm such a music whore, I'd call everything epic and have a new "most epic record ever" every week.

I use epic to describe hilarious jokes that I will never forget.
While they may not be truely epic, they will forever be epic in my own mind

"epic" is for people who fail to find intelligible ways to praise specific parts of music.

I agree that it's overused. Coheed and Cambria is mostly epic. As is My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go by Aerogramme.

This is how i'd use "epic" in a sentence:

Pirates of the carribean is an EPIC movie.

Using epic to describe music as awesome is ridiculous

Using epic to describe a Walt Disney shitfest is equally ridiculous.

True that about the Aereogramme album hey? Such a shame they're gone.

Epic is the only way to describe Source Tags & Codes, but unfortunately the great majority of people here haven't been blessed by it's sonic awesomeness.

Is it really that good? I've never listened to it and I'm not a fan of ...Trail of Dead at all. Recommended if I like?

I agree that "Epic" is overused, and is developing a very broad definition, but I feel like providing things that make me want to call a certain song epic. I am tempted to label long songs that discuss topics in a way that is more than personal or possibly from an omniscient point of view as epic. Ambient sounds at the beginning and end of a song gives it a more epic feel to me, and also multiple transitions and musical changes/themes has the same effect. And songs with choruses are less likely to sound epic to me.

But yeah haha, way too overused.

To say that it's fucking amazing isn't a strong enough description. The album doesn't really sound like anything else. Songs range from post hardcore for fans of At the Drive In and Blood Brothers to guitar epics for fans of Death Cab and Modest Mouse...and then at times mixes them together. It's definitely a grower of an album though. It might be better to start with the more accessible Worlds Apart.

I think epic songs should be songs that go on for ages. Like A - Cartel, or Konstantine - Something Corporate, if it passes say 6 minutes is epic. Epic in length

not "OMG THE LATEST TWO MINUTE BURST FROM BRING ME THE HORIZON is epic" because, it really isn't

Every song written by a post-rock band would be epic then. This is not the case.
