Poison the Well - I/III
Release Date: November 11, 2008
Record Label: Ferret Records
I/III is the first in a series of three 7"s that Poison the Well will be releasing through Ferret prior to their next (fifth) studio album. Their last album, Versions seemed to fall on mixed reviews, with some people thinking that it was a complete flop, while others found it to be more akin to a masterpiece. Being in the latter group, I'm hoping that Poison the Well will stick to the same dynamic that made Versions such a great album, and I/III is helping me keep faith.
This release only falls at about the seven minute mark for both songs. The first track "New Fast" is a pretty cut-and-dry Poison the Well song, and would have fit easily on You Come Before You. There's a nice mix of melody and aggression, but they're not really pushing the envelope. The real treat comes in the form of the second track, entitled "Purple Sabbath." Starting out with a nice dose of brutality, it falls down into some of Jeffrey Moreira's chilling clean vocals before settling into a constant trading between the two faces. It then settles back down, to have Moreira chant "rising, rising from my hole" before it falls away, then dramatically explodes back. The same entrancing musicianship that was there in Versions makes an appearance and really helps this song rise to the level of those from that album.
If you enjoyed Versions and You Come Before You and happen to be a pretty invested Poison the Well fan, then I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the first of the 7" disks. Expect installments for the rest of the series, but so far, I/III is in no way a dissapointment, and just has me further excited for their upcoming album.
