View Full Version : Greatest Recording of All Time

I reckon THE greatest recording of all time is Jeff Buckley (and guitarist Michael Tighe) performing "Hallelujah" off the album 'Grace'
Stunning vocal performance, great guitar playing, tonnes of emotion and brilliant dynamics.

Oh I forgot to add what do you think is the best recording or just best song in general?

I disagree on Hallelujah though I ilke the song.

My favorite recording ever is either Tom Waits "Clap Hands" or John Coltrane "Psalm".

for me it would have to be something from the likes of ladysmith black mambazo. those beautiful, pure, mesmerizing harmonies that wash upon your mind as if a flowing tide of a dream-like sensation

although this is the kind of topic that as soon as i hit the submit button on this post i'll think of a few more examples haha. i could see a lot coming from the 60's jamaican ska culture too

Was actually hoping you'd respond. Haven't heard of ladysmith but will listen later... and yeah, I was thinking of naming Fela Kuti's Zombie. The endless groove is just great.

I haven't been able to get my hands on the original Toots "Funky Kingston", just the American compilation version. It's bothering me haha

ladysmith black mambazo (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=313747) are incredible. the greatest vocal group of all time, & at their pinnacle without any form of backing music whatsoever (although that one album with an english chamber orchestra was stunning). a great starter song to represent what i was hinting around in my post would be something like "inkanyezi nezazi" (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofi le&friendID=295208755)

kuti crossed my mind straight away too, along with the likes of tinariwen, the early skatalites material & a number of other gorgeous soul soaked early ska harmonies from many great artists. there was such an astounding raw & heavily emotive quality to those recordings. people who ignore this era of music are doing themselves a huge wrong

Surely you jest!

It's about the destruction of a man's soul from the inside, beginning with the gradual buildup of his psyche's own twisted defense mechanisms.

Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands of all time. You are painfully full of shit. I'm sorry that I didn't originally recognize the smell coming out of your ears.

And how can you like two albums as diverse as Piper and WYWH but not the Wall?

I disagree -- Pink Floyd did a lot of cool shit and were relatively unique in the way they recorded/wrote songs. I have a hard time ignoring that and believe they've recorded some of the finest rock records in history.

Because I find their music overly boring. Including the Wall. If barrett had stayed with them I could see them having become one of my favorites, but he didn't. And they didn't.

I like TMV infinitely more. Go figure.

this thread needs more love & discussion. that's cool you checked them out though, i think their live recordings are even better. just such a quality of fragile purity

someone else i'd definitely consider to have captured some of the greatest recordings would be r. carlos naikai's early material. now everyone here is always keen to check out jazz, but this man was classically trained in jazz (trumpet) & theory, before returning to his native american heritage & taking up the american indian flute. this man is responsible for bringing the flute into the concert hall, performing with a great number of symphony & chamber orchestras over the years, the results... divine. he captures the timeless serenity of the instrument, plays with the utmost perfection, such free flowing compositions that soothe the spirit & carry the listener to the far realms of the imagination. transcending all place & time. the beauty is really beyond words, unfortunately for many ap'ers, his music seems to be hard to track down online? i'll up a song or two, let you guys decide for yourselves

Maybe if the sexual intercourse involves one of the following:

a) Anal penetration with a knife.
b) Watching John McCain's sex tape
c) Sucking off a horse with herpes
d) Lemon Party.
e) Rick Astley
f) Rape.
g) Bondage.
h) Electronica.
i) ALL OF THE FUCKING ABOVE.

...Then yes. That's exactly what Brokencyde is.

well here's a handful of songs from a few different albums. these aren't even close to being his best work, actually just 4 songs i had on my computer that i've used in various mixes for people over the years haha. bloody good though. such moments of absolute clarity, such elegant restraint. but the emotion pours out of the flute. so beautifully arranged, so soulful & exquisite, yet somehow delicately understated, like a vessel of pure flowing water. the tones & atmosphere created are like nothing i've ever come across since. enjoy mate (& anyone else interested):
