View Full Version : Never good enough

My stepdad just yelled at me because I got two B's and two C's last semester. He told me maybe if I spent less time playing guitar and more time studying I'd be getting straight A's. I'm the only one in my family going to a real 4 year school. My little brother smokes pot, but my parents think I'm the one worth yelling at. In most of my classes, a D is passing. Having to work, having your girlfriend 2,000 miles away, and a 40 minute drive never make you really feel like going to class and learning. I feel like there are too many expectations for me.

Step parents are fucking evil. (well, most of the time.)

He's cool most of the time, and that's probably why it's making me so upset. I want my family to be proud of me, but I never do anything right it seems.

ahh yes Eric understands my burning hate for my stepdad.
No one is good enough for him, but I no longer care. He is an asshole and I don't want to be accepted by him.
Just remember to reassure yourself, parents suck sometimes.

Oh well that sucks, it sounds like you're doing good though so try not to worry about it. Good luck.

i went through the same shit my whole way through highschool. i never really tried any harder, just ended up playing guitar a lot more, and following what i believed in. fuck other peoples expectations, make yourself happy. if squeaking through school is all you want, and you wanna play in a rock and roll band, do it, just be ready to work for it. as long as you have some sort of ambition- some sort of dream, follow it and forget your parents dreams for you to be a pilot or a surgeon.

that sounds about right.
Same thing happens to me. Except my parents were pretty damn intelligent. And my dad being an immigrant it upsets him that I have all the chances in the world to succed but I "fuck them up". I've got a lot to live up to, it's hard.

That's the thing, I have no idea what I want to do with my life, and it has given me more than my fair share of distress.

My stepdad is like that...in fact we just got into an arguement where he threatened to cut my tounge off...what a loser... well yea I'm a twin so whenever report cards come around I get the whole "Why didn't you do as good as your sister I mean she got straight A's...why did you get those 2 B's?"... My parents never finished college and barely graduated so they think they know best but I honestly don't think the screaming helps any...ugh it sucks but there's nothing much I can do about it so just know there's a herd of us out there with you lol =]

Well, I'm the middle child and I was always in advanced classes and I got high standardized test scores and a pretty high SAT score. My older sister and younger brother are pretty dumb, so all the expectations are on me. But I mean, seriously, in most of my college courses a D is passing....I don't plan on going to graduate school, so I don't see what's wrong with two B's and two C's.

ah man. that sucks. it's typical to see parents go harder on kids with potential. i understand you don't know what you want to do with your life. that's how i was for quite a while, but maybe there's a little you can take from the things your stepdad says. what you do in high school usually always ends up more important than you think if your future means college. the things you learn, what you study for. the habits you pick up. it's all really important. if you've got all your priorities straight, then there's nothing you can do, other than hack it until you've made something for yourself, but the last thing you want to do is waste on the music. it hurts me so much to say it. i love the music, but it's not worth it, unless you're a 150%, or a prodigy. any aspirations you have, you have to be ready to work very hard to achieve, and it means putting school second, and a lot of the time that leaves people in the shitter after they don't make it. but if you have no interest to pursue music, than all the more reason to maybe put a little more into your studies. sometimes parents like effort more than results. i hope that helps.

I know....I used to want to be in a band that toured and stuff when I was younger, but then I realized that yes, I'm probably good enough to be in a mediocre band that toured for years and never went anywhere, but I'm not good enough to make a living off of it. But there is nothing I love to do more than play my guitars when I'm bored. It's not like I play so much that I never have time to study. I sit around and do nothing a lot of the time. The main reason I didn't do that well isn't because I didn't study; I'm pretty good at taking tests and doing well without studying. It's because I skipped class a lot. I have to drive a half hour, sometimes more, to get to class. Doing that four times a week gets to be a bitch.

Hey, man. That sucks a lot. Your stepdad seems like the kind of guy who would buy movies like S.W.A.T. on DVD, am I right?? Tell him you don't have to go to college to know how to make movies like xXx or Biker Boyz.

Expectations are way too high - my parents are always like "YOU CAN DO BETTER!" evern if I get all A's and B's. I have only gotten a few C's, and I failed math in 6th grade, but doesn't it occur to anybody that that is the best I can do? Actually, it's all Nick, Melissa, Adam and Katie's fault. Because of them, I turn into a ninja/operasinger/note passer and am incapacitated, therefor I am not able to do my work. The End.
